I was browsing Version Tracker and noticed a program called iSquint (http://homepage.mac.com/tylerl82/). It's a video conversion program, for Mac OS, built especially for converting videos to iPod format (mp4 files).

Supports optimization for iPod, or TV Screen w/deinterlacing.
Two quality options: Go Nuts (high quality) & Conservative Disk Usage
Also supports Widescreen 16:9 output.

Best of all, it's FREE! Get it: http://homepage.mac.com/tylerl82/

BUMPPPPP!!

Yo thanks for dropping this man. I was trying that ffmpeg crap and I just couldn't get it to work. This right here is simple and to the point. Perfect for putting in music vids u already downloaded or other clips u may have on ur comp. I just put in a clip of that Nas n Jay Z performance from this past weekend. Now i can show everybody at my school... thanx man

Yeah, it's very nice. Good enough for anyone who is looking for a straight-to-iPod conversion program that actually works, and isn't overcomplicated. I'm loving the Convert Folder option. :D

I'm having a go now. It doesn't show up in the menu, and you can't minimise the program, but it seems to be doing the trick. If it works, I reckon it'll get some serious coverage in Mac the press.
I've been looking for working alternatives to QT 7, and this could be the best one thus far.
I'll pop my two penn'orth up here once my conversion's finished :)

Cheers,

Dan

VERDICT: Nice conversion, everything in sync, and it converts at just over 'real time'. Sweet.

I've been unable to get iSquint to work on 10.3.9, latest QuickTime and iTunes. Are there any other required programs for it to run correctly? I was unable to convert any QuickTime movies successfully with it (I've got the Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoons in QuickTime format -- perfect for a video iPod!).

how come it takes me about 8h to convert a 700MB DVD-Rip (in .avi format)? I'm on a 800MHz iMac G4, 768MB of RAM, and i doubt it should take this long.

Suggestions?
