Finally!!!! I have received my beautiful black ipod!! And yes, I installed the Martin Fields protector on the back and the front except for the click wheel since it is matte. Here are the pics:
Front:

Back

I am very happy with the results!! Installation was a snap! (Except for the peeling off the films from the backing stage,.. I had to use a knife to do so, because it is impossible to separate with your fingers!)
Now, my ipod will always be scratch free!!
Awesome, it doesn't even look like the shield is there. I have one question though, does the shield ever come off on its own? From losing it's stickyness?

Does it still fit in the felt case? How does it feel? and do you feel you could take it off if you needed?

avoid trendygeek with your life. Its fine on the back, but the front (on the screen) makes it go all colorated and psychedellic. just awful.

As I understand it, the Martin Fields protector doesn't use a wet application - there is a video on the website showing the application to a PDA.
Also, if I order the "Single Pack" for the 5G iPod, does that come with one protector for the front and one for the back?

Even though it's more expensive, I keep gravitating towards the invisibleshield.
That thing covers all sides.

Good job with that. I remember the screen protector I got for my PSP, that was a bloody nightmare to put on properly, and even then it had loads of air bubbles that wouldnt come off!

Don't know yet (I just received it), but clings on real good when I applied it, I even tried to take if off with my fingernails and its darn near impossible (you must use a piece of tape if ever you want to remove it).

Yes it fits in the felt case because the film is very thin.

So is it just a front and a back?
What about the middle.. like the sides? Won't they get scratched? I know it's not a huge deal but just wondering.
I might get some. Hope it's easy to install.

It covers the click wheel as well, but I chose not to because the wheel is matte and I like the feel of a bare click wheel.

Its completely clear and keeps that clarity because it doesn't accumulate any scratches.

That looks sharp!
I just put an InvisibleShield on my White 60GB. I was worried about the application and even started to regret getting the IS instead of something else. then I walked away to pick up a pizza I ordered. When I cam eback, I found that it looked so much better!! I like the water applications a little better because they're more forgiving on fingerprints than sticky-backed stuff. But your application looks flawless! Bravo!

how is it holding out for ya. just a few questions
1)is it peeling up at all at any corners or getting dull at all on any edge?
2)does the protector itself scratch and if so, do they go slowly go away?
3)can you put this along with your keys or change in your pocket like the invisible shield?

1) I just installed it today, so its hard to give you a straight answer, but, what I can say is that during the installation process, I noticed that the plastic is very rigid and its hard to take one corner and bend it, hope that answers your question
2) Its VERY scratchproof,..during installation I used a credit card to smooth out the plastic, and I didn't see a single scratch! Amazing!
3) I can't answer that question because I usually don't carry an mp3 player with my keys or change.

do u have aim so i can ask u some other questoins. like does the texture feel very different or is it smmooth like the ipod is. also is it thick or no? And does it cover a little bit of the sides like maybe the rounded part on the back.

(Sorry I don't have aim). To answer your questions:
Its smooth like the ipod and its thin but rigid. But the back cover doesn't cover the sides, it covers only the flat part of the chrome back.

I dont think the sides are a big problem as long as front and back are good. Are the click wheel covers the same material as the rest? Will the click wheel still be useable. Someone said the clickwheel doesn'tn fit on it correctly

Actually, I have a couple questions for ya regarding the installation.
1) How did u line up the protector w/ the sides... just with a steady hand?
2) Did you start from the click wheel side or the screen side?
3) Also, I'm guessing you did it perfect the first time, but how forgiving do you think it would be if you screwed up?

Hey Web Head. It's available in the Apple Store at Yorkdale if you live in Toronto.
IceMan, I was wondering how long did it took to arrive to your door from the moment you purchased it online. I'm from Canada and ordered 2 days ago. Thanks. I imagine the time is the same for North America since it's shipped from oversea. :)

If you get dust on the underside its easy to fix. Take a piece of scotch tape to the backside and it will grab all the dust.

1) Before peeling off the backing to apply, I put the protector on top of the target to see how I am going to align it during application.
2) On the front, I start with the click wheel's side
3) If you apply it gradually from left to right like on the video shown on the overlayplus website, you shouldn't screw up. My advice, start with the chrome back first, it is the easiest.

10-29-2005, 11:55 AM
if you really want to be anal about dust, i have read that the best place to apply these skins are in a steamed up bathroom. it had something to do with the steam binding to the dust in the air.
I have never done that before. I've always just taken cheap screen protectors for pdas and apply them as soon as i remove the plastic protective layer that the ipod comes in.

Its that one part near the click wheel that is not sticking. The back is not sticking to the rounded parts. But everything else is fine. The only thing I had trouble with is peeling it off the plastic backing. Sorry I can never get a good shot with the back for some odd reason.

I had the same problem getting the backing off. With that and just trying to get all the little dust bits and hair out that were causing air bubbles, it must have taken a half hour or maybe more! Using scotch tape to get the dust out works, but not quickly!
The one thing that so far has baffled me is the click-wheel protector. Because the surface of it is different from the rest of the iPod, the Martin Fields piece doesn't seem to stick on mine. It keeps sliding off like it has no traction. This became so annoying that I had to remove it! Am I missing something here??

I plan on getting a skin case when they become available in November, so that's not all that important to me. I figure it's more protection against abrasions so that when I eventually sell mine in a year or so for an iPod 6G with 100GB and bluetooth or some other wireless protocol, and the ability to play and export higher resolution video, this one will look pretty prestine...
I just don't get why you include a protector for the click wheel when it won't even stay in one place!

Only if you use the click wheel protector, which is seperate from the protector on the rest of the front. As I mentioned above, the click-wheel protector seems to have no sticking power and subsequently is more of an annoyance than anything else, so I've removed mine...

Tatsu
10-30-2005, 06:57 PM
Yeah the way the girl put it on in that video seems so easy but for the ipod it a little more difficult because you have to put the clickwheel positionjust right. There is a very light adhesive on the back, if you touch it it doesn't even feel sticky but it ends up sticky very well to the ipod. No water is used for application. I think for 12$ its a pretty good product.

I put mine on my 5g and nano. I like it a lot, seems that it will do the job of keeping scratches to a minimum.
It doesn't leave a residue on removal, it's not real sticky, in fact you can remove it by touching scotch tape to it and pulling on the tape. It is real clear and feels pretty good.
The click wheel part doesn't stick as firmly, but it's staying in place and that's all I need.
I'm glad it's there at least until my case arrives.

It really depends on your requirements. Personally, I plan to get a case - skin type - in addition to the MF that's already on my iPod. This is partly because the MF protector doesn't protect the sides, but partly because as good as the MF protector may be at preventing scratches, I still think it's not going to prevent stuff if the iPod falls onto a hard surface from more than a foot or so... I had a skin case for my old iPod and I could just throw it in my pocket or on any other surface and not worry about it. I'm sure I dropped it several times both onto carpeted surfaces and some harder ones from several feet. In the end, the metal on the back was a bit scuffed and if you looked really close you could see some small scratches on the front, but for a year's wear and tear, I think that was excellent. I'm hoping that the dual protection of the MF and a skin case will be even better once I decide to upgrade yet again in another year or so and sell my current 60GB on eBay :)

I received my Martin Fields protective covers yesterday and I must say I am very pleased with the way they look. The front was a very good fit with only a fraction of a millimeter exposure around the left and right edges. Frankly, I can barely tell it is on without closely looking. The back is more obvious but it does exactly what it says. The front is really beautiful. As for the installation, it was a hassle getting the backing off but it only took a couple of minutes with my fingernail. I had used a microfiber cloth (from a pair of sunglasses) to wipe off the front and back of the iPod and was very careful not to touch the sticky side. Handling the edges, I carefully placed the shield down in the right spot and it adhered quickly. I then used the microfiber cloth to smoth it out and just had a couple of very small bubbles near the edges. I used the corner of a credit card to push them out. It probably took 15 minutes for the total installation. Count me as a very satisfied customer.

How is the fit around the clickwheel? Does your thumb run up against the shield when you are using it and if so is it irritating?

It is a very good fit and I honestly have not noticed it one bit. All in all I'm very pleased.

careful...your thumb might get MF plastic cuts from rubbing the wheel.
you see...that would never happen if you buy my handy dandy saran wrap shield!

Anyone applying this thing with a credit card to smooth it out, be very very carefull how much pressure you put on the card.
Today I put very little pressure and in the end had to take the thing off due to some bubles and dust. When I took it back off to clean you could clearly see some scratch marks where the card has run down the ipod.
You cannot see these big heave scratch's with the Martins field on which is strange but they are very visable with it off.
at first I check to see if it was the sticky stuff off the field but nope they are quite big deap wedge shaped marks :(

can you order just a front protector? i like my invisible shield because it protects the sides. while i don't think the texture it has is that bad, i wouldn't mind having a crystal clear front cover.

i thought there was another shield on the homepage that was also made out of helicopter blade protector stuff, but cheaper than invisible shield. anyone remember who made it?
