As of today I am on my fifth pair of Sennheiser PX-100 headphones in the space of 18 months. Crazy no?

There was my original pair. Then two replacement pairs. And the two most recent pairs were purchased new because either (a) I had lost my receipt or (b) I was in a hurry and couldn't wait around for Sennheiser customer service people to get back to me. They just keep breaking, some within a few months. It's the usual thing - the cable gets loose around the jack so it keeps cutting in and out in one ear.

Don't get me wrong - I think they are great headphones for the price, especially for those of us who absolutely loathe those ear canal phones that folk here always rave about :) They sound great, they look nice, they're cheap, and they are very comfortable. However, they just aren't very rugged. At all.

Although I use them every day, it is very much normal everyday wear and tear.

Anyone else had similar experiences? Anyone got any tips to "ruggedise" the PX-100, particularly around the jack connector? I think some kind of strong rubber wrapping to prevent the cable from bending back and forth as my iPod jiggles about in my jacket pocket might be the way to go. Advice grateful received, I don't want to replace these again for a while!

thx

Ian

you could try shrink wrap (those tubes of rubber that when heated shrink and completely seal the cable you put them on)
And by the way: WOW! Kevlar reinforced cable got destroyed by just wering it in your shirt pocket? Hoew come? PLease describe it more. I have a pair of new PX200 and really don't wanna buy new ones for a few years

Like a lot of cheap headphones, the part where the wire joins the jack is really weak. So, if your iPod is likely to jiggle about a bit in your pocket as you walk, the cable gets bent at an angle occasionally. We're just talking about very ordinary wear and tear here, nothing extraordinary. They are good headphones, but rather fragile.
