I've been curious if I could modify the 3g docking station to accomodate an iSkin'd iPod (I don't use the doc anymore, so I am not too worried about trashing it!)
Well, I popped it open today (very simple), here are a few pictures:

Here's my 3g 20GB iPod (in Jacko iSkin) nicely mounted.
I will add a little strain relief to ensure the back of the iPod seats against something solid. It's really not too bad as it is already; pretty solid/stable:

...and docked iPod in Passion iSkin, for good measure:
Wow, that looks nice - I don't really like to flip the skin back anyway :( It takes a while to adjust the film over the wheel and buttons again so it messes up everything. (I just plug the cord into the iPod now and lay it down...) I might do what you did though. :)

Thanks for the info, mark. I'm still waiting on my iPod/iSkins, but I think I may try that! I only wish there was a way to cover the exposed parts of the dock. I guess I'm trying to decide between doing this or cutting along the holes in the back to make a "hinged" door on the bottom of the iSkin.

you could just cut out the cup piece on the top with a dremel to give the iskin abit more room

Thats cool, but I don't get whats so much better about using the dock over the cable. Unless you use the line out that is.
I just use the cable...

Exactly, I originally planned to remove the existing *cup* using a dremel. The resulting hole would be nearly the correct dimension. The dock plastic walll thickness is about the same as the iSkin's silicone thickness.
I would also need to make room for the tiny dimples on the back of the iSkin (or just chop them off :)).
The current config, as shown above exposes no circuitry, no delicate wiring and is quite sturdy...I'm thinking of JUST adding strain relief, utilizing one of the existing screw positions for mounting...

I bought a spare dock for my 20GB 3G. It comes with the top cover for both the 10/20GB and the 40GB model. The 'hole' for the 40GB is wide enough for a 20GB wearing the iSkin but it is not long enough. A bit of cutting might be in order!!

I wondered this myself & seeing no pictures, attacked my dock blind.
To spare you the chew marks on the edges of your dock, I took some detailed pictures. (http://www.lockup.org/dock/)
