View Full Version : Got my InvisibleShield!
Just got mine in the mail, gonna install it tonight... :D
Update: pics posted here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ayn/sets/72057594138173449/)
I highly recommend doing the back first, it is much easier to do, and you will get the hang of it when you do the front... I'll see how mine looks when it's completely dry, I'll take more pics and upload them to my site...
Update 2: Just removed the film on the clickwheel, I like the look better... Uploaded more pics, it's been left alone for about 4 hours now, almost dry... :)
Update 3: Just added some post-healed pics, this is exactly a week after Invisible Shield application.

See if you guys can get some really close pics of the edges where the "flaps" fold over. I've seen lots of pics with long or full iPod shots. I want to see the close detail of how these things are cut.
Mine's on order, but I'm considering cutting the flaps off and just applying it to the back surface. I'd like your opinions on that.
Just installed it, took a while man... not easy to get the edge to wrap around and stay... install is kindda sloppy, I think, but it does the job... I've posted some pics here (http://gallery.andrewng.com/InvisibleShield).

Hmm... I ordered one of these after hearing the click wheel was cut out. If sure does not look that way in the pictures.
Phil
the clickwheel is cut out, the front has 3 separate pieces, the big film with the cw cut out, and select button cover, and the rest of the cw.
u dont have to install the films for the clickwheel...

Cool... thank you!
yeah, and when I took the pics it wasn't dry enough to press the edge of the cw down for it to stick... it should look better when it's completely dry... I'll take more pics then...
I might switch to the Martin Fields film when that become available though... Or I'll just wait for a Contour Showcase... they usually take their time to release new cases though... sigh...

I didn't install the one for the clickwheel (I did install the center button one though). I like the matte look and how it contrasts with all the gloss. Hopefully the click wheel doesn't get TOO scratched!
I just removed the film on the clickwheel, I agree that it looks better this way. :) and I just posted more pics... :)

i installed mine and it looks quite similar to yours; i'll agree, it looks ok, but the fact that you can't control things like the little bubbles that pop up underneath and that they're accentuated by the black makes it look sloppy, even though i'm sure you're aware it's painstaking to apply. i kind of wish i waited and just bought martin fields. but these are ok and will hold me over i suppose.

What bubbles? If you install it carefully enough, there shouldn't be any. Mine has zero bubbles.

What's your opinion on how well the edges adhere to the iPod? Do you think they're liable to come loose or start to curl?
I was planning on cutting the tabs off the front and back pieces and just installing it on the flat front and back surfaces.

I had the same concerns about the edges sticking for any length of time, that why I decided only to use front face piece and not worry about the back and sides. The front piece fits very nicely and covers the entire front. Keeping the screen protected was my only intent.

Awesome.. I was hoping that it would look good without the clickwheel covered, and it does. Thanks for the pics.
Now, once I have enough saved up for the iPod, I'll have to save up some more for the sheild :P
Now, once enough people get it, I'm going to try to decide if it looks better on the black, or the white iPod. I like the look of the black, but I think the sheild may just look best on the white one... ah.. choices choices :P

Same here. For the life of me, I couldn't get the corners to stick. Not the tabs, but the edges that wrap around the corners. I walked away, thinking I would remoisten them later when the rest of it was stuck down. I came back and simply pressed on them and they stuck! It's only been on a few hours. I uses very little water. iPod is working perfectly.

LOL! Last night was a killer for me. Installing the back was okay - but the tabs were just not sticking on! I tried to keep it place with several items planted beside the ipod, but even a hour or so, still wouldn't stick.
I kinda gave up and moved to the front straightaway (I was short for time!) - I had presumed that I'll cut off the tabs once the back dries properly.
Anyways, to my horror, the flaps in the front were even smaller than the tabs! Once I got the main front bit sorted, fixing the flaps seemed near impossible. To make matters worse, my iPod start playing up and turned on even though it was on lock! Also, Firewire messages keep popping up and tracks started playing by itself. I was certain that water definitely got inside :(
So, here I was - a wet (and what seemed to be) damaged iPod and a horror of an attempt to stick some plastic in front of me :(
I left it for an hour or so to think of excuses I will have to say to Apple and InvisibleShield about the whole fiasco (InvisibleShield don't accept returns on faulty installations methinks - and what will I say to Apple!?). I returned with false hope - and guess what? everything was sticking just fine!
Moral? Patience is key here. The adhesive system is quite strange with this but eventually you will get there. It is important that you leave the newly applied skin to rest for 9 hours or so before using it properly.
As for the iPod malfunctions? I just left it to dry up inside (i.e. don't use it for a while). It works absolutely fine now :)
The result was surprisingly good. No bubbles except for tiny ones at the front side edges (doesn't look that bad tho - I think many have the same symptom). Screen is crystal clear and the skin seems a lot smoother than the one used in the RainyDay review. I feel confident just leaving my iPod in my pocket - well worth the price IMO!

I installed my Invisible Shield tonight, and the job came out almost perfect. Everything stuck down easily, and no bubbles whatsoever. The job was a piece of cake. The Ipod was ready for use, mere moments after the installation.
What did I do, you may ask? I used special radio control technology. Hehehehe... I used a tip I heard years ago, when I first started working on RC car bodies. RC people almost always use Windex instead of soap and water, to apply decals onto Lexan RC bodies. It works much better. Bubbles are less frequent and easier remove, and everything dries quickly once permanently stuck down. There is almost no wet out time. Wet out is the time waiting for the adhesive to fully adhere, where the very tiny bubbles mysteriously disappear. I also worked in the label business for ten years, and learned a lot about adhesive.
1. Peel the decal off the backing sheet with a clean pair of tweezers.
2. Hold up the shield vertically with the tweezers, and spray Windex onto the adhesive area.
3. Most of the Windex will drip down the shield, and collect at the bottom. Wipe of the excess with your finger.
4. Place the shield onto the Ipod with the tweezers. The Windex will allow you to easily move the shield into position.
5. Use a credit card to force the bubbles and excess Windex to the edges of the Ipod.
6. Keep holding the credit card down at the edge of the Ipod with one hand, and press down the edges with your other hand for twenty seconds.
7. Job done. Easy as pie. Windex rules.
I said the job went ALMOST perfectly. A tiny piece of fuzz got between the shield and the ipod, right near the click wheel. Ugghh.

Windex contains 1-5% weight (out of 100%) of isopropanol. Which I believe will harm the iPod and clickwheel plastic surface. Are you sure it's working fine on your iPod? Would love to see some picture though.

I've only ever heard of using Windex. I'm not sure about other window cleaners.
I'd also like to know if I can use other similar products like Windex.
I should receive my InvisibleShield tomorrow along with the wetting agent, that they used in the Rainy Day Magazine review:
rainydaymagazine.com/RDM2005/GearNGadgets/October2005/RDMGG_InvisibleShieldCutOut.htm
So should i either use the 'Wetting Agent' or the Windex method? I want the perfect solution, please :D
Buzzbait
10-30-2005, 12:38 PM
I have no reason to believe that Windex is not the perfect agent for appying the film. There was plenty of time to adjust the shield on the iPod, with very little excess slippage. Mine dried fully with ZERO bubbles. I had ZERO adhesion problems. I had ZERO iPod problems afterward.
Just follow my directions above. You'll do fine.
If you try another glass cleaner, make sure that it is amonia based.

Okay, but I live in Denmark and I don't know if Windex is possible to purchase here. I'll just have to check the supermarkets etc. :)

Windex is an ammonia based window cleaner, it has a transparent blue color to it. In the United Kingdom a comparable product is Windolene or if you are in New Zealand you can look for "Mr. Mussle". In Singapore you should be looking for a product called "Kao Glass Magiclean". What it's called is not so important as what is in it - ammonia. In the Netherlands and in Portugal the equivalent of Windex is Glassex.

OMFG, thank you, Buzzbait. I'm going to have to try this. Sounds great.
I'm getting yet another Nano as gift (gonna be the 3rd one), I'm gonna install the IS and ship it to my friend instead of shipping it directly to him. He's not the kind of guy who takes care of things, and I would hate to see my wedding gift to him all scratched up. Also, Apple doesn't have a gift option and when you ship it to somebody else they can't really tell who sent it. :)
I'm gonna try the Windex route this time!
btw, my IS on my black 5g has healed and it looks nice, I could've done a better job, I see some very tiny bubbles at places, and the edges still got some air, but it is pretty invisible unless you look at it up close.
The IS comes with lifetime replacement warranty, so maybe in a year or so, if I still own this 60gb, I'll get a replacement. :)

Some people are reporting that the IS uses a strong adhesive that stays on your iPod after you peel off the IS several weeks after having it installed. Can anyone confirm or deny this with pics?
I'll take some more pics soon... I'll update the original post and post a new reply to bump this thread after they're posted.
Also, I checked the Nano cases forum, and found out about the BestSkinEver skins, they don't have 5g skins yet, but their nano skin looks just like the IS, but at 1/4 the price, anybody here got experience with their skins?

About removing the IS, the same type of film is used on cars (more often than not on VERY highend automobiles, they come as a factory option on the Lotus Elise, and I know Ferrari owners with it installed), they do not leave any residue when removed correctly (slowly).

well i'll be damned. i just purchased my invisible shield for my 5g.
there are just a few things to note about bestskinsever:
1) how precise is the die-cut is in comparison to the invisibleshield.
2) they don't have a 30-day satisfaction guarantee like invisible shield. if you installed it incorrectly, or installed it at all and not satisfied, they won't refund your money or accept returns. quoted from their site "Full refunds for unused product, minus shipping charges, will be issued when all purchased product is returned." also invisibleshield has a lifetime warranty.
3) the end product texture on top of the ipod. is it as glossy and refrigerator like? or more smooth?
A lot of you wanted some "post-healed" pics, so I just took some, check them out HERE (http://gallery.andrewng.com/Invisible_Shield_healed)! :)

I thought $24.95 was a bit too much for two slips of plastic. They should at least include a third in case you make a mistake applying these things.
I got some 3M Paint Protection Film used on cars. I noticed that the "specifications" were very similar to those of invisibleshield. I bought some sheets, made some cutouts and applied it using a solution of 25% Isopropyl Alcohol and 75% water. Some spray it, but I put the solution in a bowl and dipped the film. I did this two days ago. So far the ipod is operational. The clickwheel responds better. I will be taking the film off in a month or so to see the affects of the material. And since I have a lot of film left over, I can afford to make a mistake. I'd rather sacrifice the film and not the iPod.

Buzzbait:
Your Windex method worked like a charm.
I received my Invisible shield last week, but after hear those horror stories about moisture seeping into the iPod, I decided to go with the Martin Fields protectors ( 2-pack).
I was forced to get a replacement for my black 5g 60gb and naturally, the MF shield did not apply well to the second iPod. Luckily with a 2-pack I was ready for the situation. But for some reason, the second MF protector just would not adhere well either.
I read your forum post and decided to give the Invisible Shield a try.
First I did the back. Aside from my own clumsiness with tweezers -- I dropped the wet shield on the tile floor, a carpet, into the kitchen sink, onto the dining room table...
I just kept spraying that Windex to force away the dirt. I have to say, that once I got the iPod and the Invisible Shield in close proximity to each other. the back went on quite easily. As suggested, I kept letting the excess drip off and gave it a final wipe with my finger. The edges take it little bit of patience, but there comes a moment when the material is simply ready to adhere. Then it does.
With the front I got a little smarter and kept a clean dinner plate under it while spraying and holding it with the tweezers. Now this is where things got a little tricky. Every time it began to dry, and I tried holding those little tabs in place, air pockets kept forming aroung the edges.
Three times I decided to lift the front shield off and try again, but when I reapplied it, the four outer edges kept billowing up. Finally I decided to just live with a few humongous bubbles until a decent case becomes available.
Just when it appeared that it too late to do anything about the bubbles, I took the edge of my credit card and worked the air bubbles toward the click-wheel. As the air bubbles disappeared at the edge the click-wheel, the Invisible Shield surfaces all flattened out beautifully.
It looks just about perfect. It really did look dry and ready for use within a few minutes. I briefly turned it on, just to make sure it was working. Now I will remain patient overnight and let things settle.
Thanks for the advice.

Funny thing that everyone has the same comments about the edges.
I agree--they're really tough to work with. I installed and removed the back five times before finally getting frustrated, leaving the room for ten minutes, talking on the phone, only to come back and see that the edges had stuck themselves! I had been pressing and pressing and they wouldn't stay. I was at the end of my rope and then they were miraculously stuck!
I can only assume that I had sort of 'trained' them with all the pressing and that they relaxed into that shape and then stuck while I was out of the room. Finshed the install three hours ago--iPod is running right now, but I'm still working the edges on the front a little at a time. I'm overall very impressed with the product.

I applied the IS to my white 60gb, and what an ordeal I went through on the front. The nano IS does not have "extra edges" on the front shield, so this was new to me. Also, I would have rathered not having the clickwheel cutout as it came unloosed after all the tampering during application. After all that frustration, I took the shield and cut the edges. It was a bit easier to apply, but trying to get the hole aligned with the clickwheel was very difficult. The next day, it's a bit better, but more air bubbles than I am comfortable with. I've emailed IS for a replacement and will wait and see what their response is.

if you're having issues with the side tabs, your shield might be a bit too wet/soapy...
just install the shield and leave the side tabs hangin' out for a few mins...
go get a non-alcoholic drink 'lest u wanna get drunk and mess up your ipod shield install....
go watch some cartoons or Rachel Ray's 30minute meals on food network...
go back and check...
after the water/soap/windex/alcohol/whatever-you're-using have evaporated a little, it will be more tacky, and you'll have no problem fastening the side-flaps...

theres no doubt that its good product, it's just a bit expensive if you ask me...
so if you don't mind the price...go for it.
it may be nerve wrecking if you've never done anything like this, but take your time and don't panic...you'll be fine.
about water/soap, as long as you don't dip the whole ipod into a bowl of water, you'll be fine.
if you screw up, remove it the shield and wipe/dry up your ipod, then start again.
if you screw up badly, call IS to get a replacement...i think many of the iloungers screwed up and gotten free replacements.
thats what you get for the premium price.
Yup, I too think the price is high because of their lifetime replacement program... Which we should take advantage of as we all paid for it already... :)

Just installed a shield from bestskinsever... I used the windex method and everything seemed to go smoothly. It's been about an hour and I just re-stuck the corner tabs, but as for now I seem to have no noticible air bubbles. Right now the iPod is sitting in it's box where it will be for a few more hours before I check the progress.

windex works perfectly. just make sure you get the windex all over the sticky side, and use latex gloves so you dont get fingerprints on it and royally **** it over like i did. return and re buy FTW
