View Full Version : New iPods - Any Kind Of Trouble?

I received my iPod last Friday, but it died after just two hours! :(

Something went wrong after syncing, and I had to use the iPod Updater utilities Restore function to get it working again - only the application unexpectedly quit in the middle of the operation, leaving me with the dreaded "folder icon and exclamation mark of death" on the screen. After hanging on the phone with Apple for an hour ("yes ma'am, for the zillionth time, I tried reseting and holding down the rewind an fastforward buttons like the support site says") they finally told me they'd replace it - only it would be Monday or maybe Tuesday before they could pick it up because it was already too late and they don't operate in the weekend (they should for what I pay for Apple products). So that means it will be Friday at the earliest before I get a new one - almost three weeks after ordering. Needless to say, I'm not happy (would an email to steve@mac.com work?).

Does anyone else have a nonfuctioning new generation iPod? Take the poll (yes, even if yours works) and post your story.

My has worked fine right out of the box... of course, I didn't install the MMJB (which seems to be the main problem with winniPods).

Mine hung irretriveably - ie. the Menu+Pause/Play for 10 seconds (or even 60 seconds!) thing didn't work. Since there appears to be no way of physically switching it off, I had to wait for the battery to fail - which takes a loooooooong time when it's not using the hard drive.

When the battery died, it has lost all the data - songs and settings.

I then junked MusicMaker JukeBox (which was appalling anyway), switched to EphPod, restored my music and all has been fine since.

Ok, so MMJB seems to be the source of trouble on the Windows side, but what about Mac users? I use a Mac, and it seems that the iPod Updater is the culprit in my case. Any other people have problems on the Mac side?

Yes, I had a similar experience. A few songs into syncing for the first time my 15 GB, the HD started making this sequence where it would buzz then try to read, and over and over and over. It also crashed my computer. Eventually, it degraded to the point where connecting it would restart it into "scandisk" mode, and then when runnign for about 20 minutes, it would finish, then restart and do it over. I returned it to the Apple SoHo store, and they were out of stock, so they gave me a refund and I ordered one online.

Mine has worked well so far (30gb). Intermintent hang ups have occured but nothing too dire. But I will tell you this: my other iPod (a 20gb) died after 3 weeks of use. I was at work listening to The Who and it just stopped mid song. I reset it and the Apple logo came on and stayed on no matter what was done to it. Then it just started to get hot. I called Apple they sent a box (no arguement from them after I explained what took place) and I got a new one about a week later. I feel I recieved good service, but I was really unhappy at first. All I could see was a $500 hot paperweight.

My first one didn't have a working firewire connection, so I returned it to Bestbuy. They swapped. I brought home the new one and got it up and running without a problem.

Mine works fine I guess, but three things still bug me:

1. Battery life seems to be shorter than it should be.

2. Needing to reset the iPod too many times.

3. Unexplained high pitched noise coming from the unit. (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=ipodnew&action=display&num=1052571885)

My remote didn't work when I got my new 30gb'er, so I took it back to the Apple store and they replaced it - a little annoying as it's a half hour drive up there and I listened to the iPod on the way but was tune-less on the way home with the new, blank iPod.

Meanwhile, MMJB is terrible, (don't flame the music taste) I ripped a Huey Lewis & the News CD and that was fine... then I ripped Madness and Alanah Myles CD's which appeared to tag okay as the CD lookup worked okay. The next thing I know there are 4 copies of each Huey Lewis track, BUT no, they weren't they were the other CD's I had ripped which had been hijacked and given Huey Lewis track names - bizarre. In addition, MMJB never detects the iPod, I have to do it manually and volume levelling does not work at all.

Probably gonna switch to ephpod.

My first one didn't have a working firewire connection either! Spent several hours going through tech support on the phone! Apple's conclusion...DOA on arrival! I'm still waiting for my replacement to come in the mail. They estimate it will arrive on the 20th or 21st! Kinda depressing since I orinially placed my order on the 3rd and I've still yet to see my iPod work!

I feel your pain, Johnny. I ordered mine the night Jobs introduced the suckers, and my replacement should arrive sometime next week.:(

Wish they'd priority mail to customers who need a replacement... :(

Right out of the box the backlight didn't work. The buttons light up, but the screen does not light up at all. I went through a bunch of stuff with the Apple tech to no avail. So I have to wait for another.

I have to reset my iPod very frequently. It's not show-stopping, but it is annoying. Anyone have ideas?
