Mac users should use HandBrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) (which is even better :D).

Except that by several accounts the h.264 video Handbrake creates won't play in an iPod.

i've been having problems with handbrake as well. not only did it get the chapters wrong, it also encoded video at 24fps even when set to "Same as source," causing the output to be very jerky... maybe i'm doing something wrong?
