View Full Version : Has anyone successfully converted iPod-compatible h.264 video?

Looking around the forums, I don't think I've come across one person who has successfully encoded h.264 video for the iPod, at least not with something other than QT Pro. Handbrake for the Mac apparently doesn't work, and neither does Videora Convertor (or so I hear). MPEG4 works, but not h.264. Has anyone done it?

no it is possible to do a double conversion from avi with ffmpegx to 264 then run that through QT pro to make qt work its magic.

Are you serious? I have 17 movies, 63 music videos encoded with videora using default h.264 settings.....
Already deleted the .vobs....
Going to try and convert the h.264's to sp...
That is lame. How the hell do you make a program and the formats don't work.

I know, I stupidly converted a bunch of stuff with Handbrake, and while my new iPod hasn't arrived yet, it looks like none of it will work. There may be something about the iPod-compatible h.264 format that we don't know.

The thing about H264 is that it is not just a single compression algorithm, but a platform. A single H264 video can actually have different compression algorithms, with decoder inside the file itself. That's why it takes so long to encode files, the computer is analyzing scenes and trying to figure the best way to compress.
So it may turn out the iPod is only able to decode certain H264 files. I am sure that as time passes, some of the freeware programs (ffmpegx, HandBrake, etc.) will have profiles specifically for playback on iPod. But it will take a couple of weeks maybe-

I think a revised HandBrake with H264 iPod support is coming-

Check the second page, the developer posted a sample video that apparently works on iPod (I haven't gotten mine yet so can't try.)
So hopefully a new HandBrake will be released soon. Now we just need ffmpegx to be updated too...

YES, and without QTpro.. Last night about 1:30 am I found iPSP, ran a seinfeld clip through the demo, could only encode 10 minutes, and it WORKED and looked good too.. Encoded fast, still waiting on the unlock code so I can start ripping some simpsons eps.. It seems like the all the programs that work for the PSP, also work for the iPod.. At least in OS X...
managed to convert using Videora ipod converted. :D
video looks great.

I guess not. I assumed that the clip he posted was with something other than the current HandBrake, because it plays fine on my iPod. I wonder what he was doing differently...

using "qtamateur" you can make an "ipod ready" .mp4! see my previous thread "h.264 export settings (via final cut express or qtamateur) for a working (!) ipod mp4" for details.

All you have to do is download quicktime 7 and then download the h.264 video. And then when you get to the Itunes screen right click on the video and press convert selection for ipod/iphone.It will be a little bit lower quality but it will still look good.

You do realize you responded to a 3 year old thread, right?
