Anyone managed to load up OS 10.2 onto their iPod yet? I've tried twice but haven't been able to get a clean install. First time I tried on a partitioned drive but the apple splash screen just hung on me - next time I had to enter unix command to reboot or continue installation.
I gave up on a dual partition went back to a single drive. I used 10.2 install disk, but had problems with the apple splashscreen hanging on the start-up on the first attempt - so reformat - restore iPod software - install 0S X; then gave me Unix 'restart' or 'continue installation' prompts the second time. I tried both - neither worked. OS 9.2.1 is no problem, just Jag.
I want to use this 30 gig iPod as a portable drive with booting capability under OS X. What gives? anyone know how to do this proplerly?

If I remember correctly, Apple built OS 10.2 so that it couldn't boot up on an iPod.
I've just put OS X 10.2.6 on my 30 Gb iPod with CarbonCopyCloner. There is only one problem, the iPod now lost it's 'iPodNess' and iTunes won't see my music collection anymore.
I also haven't found a way to boot from the iPod.
Still investigating.
Yeah, it's actually easy.
Just download Carbon Copy Cloner, uncheck everything except the base system files (unless you want them and have space, of course, but I did this on a 5gb) and give it a GOOD long while to do that. It looks stuck at the end, but it just takes a long time.
Plug in the iPod, restart, holding down option. The screen comes up to select a boot disk. Choose your iPod, and it's over.
It doesn't affect any of the "iPod" functions....mine still works perfectly.
But maybe something is different in the "new" iPods.

My problem was that I had checked my whole system so also the icon and the disk information was copied onto the ipod. And then iTunes didn't recognize it as an iPod anymore.
So I had to reset it and put all my MP3s on it again...
But the next time I'll check less files in carbon copy cloner.

Hi - did exactly this and it worked wonderfully on a 15gig iPod. Only thing is it is taking up massive space - I think about 7 gig. Going to try to erase applications I don't need on iPod...

Sweet smell of success again - managed to erase 3 gig from iPod since the the Admin folder (containing Music, Pictures) was so huge I deleted the mp3s and pics, as well as heavy apps like photoshop that had been copied to the iPod...
piece a' cake!
