same here. I had to end up using Pspware to convert my videos. The encodes are fast, but the quality and encoding options kinda suck.
It works pretty good for things like Cartoons.

has anyone had any luck with 3GP? i converted a test video.. i didnt want to use all my time and energy encoding things for them not to work...
(my settings = QVGA [aka 320x240], 30fps, 768kbps [max supported, i think], stereo [128kbps])
spits out mp4's, which itunes recognizes as h.264... that sounds like an error, but i wont know til my darn ipod ships and gets to me =\

No! I encoded 15 videos in ffmpeg, no luck. I also used quicktime pro's mp4 export and used perfect the settings, still no luck. And yes I used the settings that Apple said will work on the iPod.
The ONLY files that have worked for me are the one's I encoded using the 'Movie to iPod (320x240)' setting that tasks 6-8 hours to encode 10 minutes of an AVI.

then again, in ffmpegx, i saw the setting PSP. im going to try that and post my results.
it matches the settings apple uses.

WOW! PSPware did work. I am considering fronting the 15 dollars, which i have never done before (I am having much trouble getting around it).

FYI: I emailed the developers of PSPware
"Hi,
I just ran into your PSPware software today, oddly it was on an iPod forum. It appears that your software is one of only a few softwares that will encode videos for the brand new 5th generation iPod video correctly. Most importantly, it is the only program to my knowledge and experience that does it very quickly.
I so desperately want to access all the features by paying the 15 dollar fee, but I am hesitant because I do not own a PSP, and I believe that your people could build a great iPod Video encoding program. It would be very successful in my opinion because Quicktime Pro 7 cost 30 bucks and encodes INCREDIBLY slowly.
Just a suggestion"

I think the issue is the AVC support of the device. I think encodes in ASP format will work and that's the ones PSPWARE produces. If you use Videora in SP mode those files are reported to work. I think they need to work on AVC Support, and I'm sure the third parties will eventually get it working.

well have you guys loaded the movie files over to your iPod yet? I wouldn't go and pay 15 bucks for it just yet. Remember that the other feather for PSPware is just for the psp. If they release a version that supports uploading video without itunes, and create a nice management system.... I would be interested in paying money for that.
The thing I like best about PSPware is that I can load up 20-30 things and walk away. The program will encode everything for me. Make sure to use the right settings for widescreen movies.
I can make a guide for anyone who hasn't yet figured it out. But looks like everyones got the hang of it. I'm glad to have mentioned PSPware then.

The reason why Quicktime is so slow is because it's encoding in H.264. PSPware is encoding in just regular mpeg4 which dramatically reduces time to encode.
Usually H.264 will produce videos with less pixilation and will have a smaller file size. But I guess when you're like me, you just want fast. PSPwares videos aren't half bad though.

SP should be fine for a screen of that size it's just that the filesizes would be larger

i use pspware for my psp and it is awsome. The problem is that it converts video in the psp format right? i haven't tried it.
I have converted two movies using mactheripper and handbrake. i'll try at 10 when i get my ipod to see if they work.
these are mac apps though.

I just bought a 30gb white yesterday. I tried using quicktime pro but it took forever, and since I had already registered a copy of pspware (I own a psp as well), I decided to give it a shot. It actually works really well! You can set the quality options to adjust how many mb's per hour, and it lets you setup a queue. It's way faster than quicktime, and I can live with the fact that the video is not h.264, AND that all the videos encoded are PSP ready as well. If apple makes quicktime quicker, I may try it again. BTW, I am in no way affiliated with PSPware, just a happy customer who finds great value with their product.

Yep Quicktime is not appropriatly named as it's anything but quick <g>

I also forgot to mention that you can drop VOB (unencrypted, or course) into PSPware as well. ;)

Nice quip Scarpad.
The quicktime encodes, while taking forever to do, are pristine. I did an episode of sealab and an episode of aquateen they are perfect quality. The PSPware recodes have noticable imperfections, but the time saved is worth it.
But using PSPware, overnight I encoded 3 music videos, 2 more tv shows, and 2 films. It also turns out the demo mode isn't restricting anything yet, and doesn't appear it will because I am not syncing to PSP, thats where it restricts you, i think.

PSPware can't rip straight from DVDs, you have to get the DVD's VOBs by other means.

when you rip a dvd you usually end up with like 4 vobs, can you combine these in pspware to create one movie? Or do you need to use something like handbrake to create an avi or something.

Actually some ripping programs let you rip the entire movie into one large vob file, then you just drop that into pspware. :D

I found the following settings work fine with my iPhone v1.0.2 and ffmgegx v0.0.9x r2 on OSX 10.4.10. I have used these settings to convert MP4 and AVI/Xvids quite a few times. iTunes will sync them to the iPhone with no errors, in addition you can stream the outputted files over wifi using Telekenesis and the iPhone web browser.
Hope it helps. ;)
