I've got a 60Gb black 5g on order & im trying to convert some of the video files on my computer to play on my new toy when i get it. I'm using Quicktime pro's "export to ipod" option and it takes hours, even for short music videos. Is this the best method to use, or is there another (quicker) way.

3GP can convert a ton of other formats. I've used it to convert VOB, WMV, MOV, etc. Just drop it in there and find out whether it converts.

I'm having loads of luck with Cleaner XL.
Granted, it's a PRO application, but it batches files into MP4 with customizable settings, so I'm able to pump the livin' heck outta the Mbps.
I did a batch of videos last night that completely adhered to Apple's settings and they look and soung gorgeous.
It's worth the cost if you and some friends want to rip some videos for the ipod.
Split the cost amongst a few friends and it will pay for itself in a few weeks.
If you're planning on considering a video podcast, you're doing yourself an injustice to NOT get this program for your posting needs as simply anything else is a whip, timewise, and you don't get the customization and quality with other software.

If you are on a PC try Nero Recode 2!
It only takes 10 Minutes to convert a 20 minutes-clip to mp4-video with aac-audio!
MP4 should play on the iPod!
http://www.doom9.org/nerodigital.htm
Pro:
+ very fast
+ very easy to use
+ the output size can be set manually (so no "big heads" bc of squeezed 16:9-movies)
Contra:
- Not freeware if you don't have Nero6 (costs 38 Euros if you click the right link - still less then Quicktime Pro)
- No other output format to choose - only mp4
