Well just like the title says, my computer recognizes my ipod when I plug it in, but iTunes and the iPod updater do not. I ran into a skipping problem with my iPod a few days ago where it would start skipping and freeze in the middle of songs, and decided to reset the hard drive and reimport my music. While reimporting the music something went wrong, so now I have 4 gigs of music on the iPod, but it only shows 1 song. Is there a way to get my iPod updater to work again? because I have the 9/23 one and the 11/15/04 one, and neither work Is there an alternate way to clear the hard drive, because when I click on my ipod in my computer the whole window just freezes. Is it a damaged hard drive? Is it too late for my iPod? Please help me brothers, I feel so naked without it.
Edit: Well I just discovered the diagnostic mode and ran several tests, which all came out okay, except for the smrt dat check, which, instead of reading "retracts 4 reallocs0 and pending0" said "retracts 101 reallocs0 and pending0".

i'll bet it's not dead.
have just recovered from very similar problem having followed advice here; ipod recognised as being there as external disk but nada in itunes. itunes ran fine without pod in place. pod ran on its own. together....like brad and jennifer.
had just loaded on some hacked ad%be software (i know, i know!!)
anyway, to cut a long story short it screws the registry and ipods seem FIRST on the list of problems.
so hot reset the ipod. re-installed itunes and then updater. and today we're all back together again. 'cept brad and jennifer.
best of luck, hope it works for YOU

Hot reset? Please clarify. And what was the software which you said caused it?

plug in to external power source. toggle hold switch. then press menu and select together until the apple appears. then let go and immediately press select and play. should then tell you its's in disk mode. unplug and then put in the dock. should (hopefully) allow you to re-install and update.
the software was hacked adode.

Too late, I already sent it in to Apple and got a refurbished, shiny replacement a while ago:D, but maybe the info'll help others.

I had a similar problem and I have posted a thread about it. Seems that my problem was the cable!
Different cable problem resolved. Still don't know why Windows explorer would detect the Ipod but Itunes wouldn't....
