reconfiguring first gen ipod from mac to windows

I've dowloaded the most recent ipod updater, but whenever I use a firewire to plug my old first gen ipod, which was initially configured on a mac, into my windows machine, the updater says "this software does not recognize this model" etc. etc.

If I can't use the updater to reconfigure my old ipod, what can I do? Am I missing something with the updater?

Try resetting the iPod. Try letting the battery discharge for 24 hours. Try restarting your computer. Connect the iPod>lay it flat and reset it while it's connected to the computer & open the updater.

Thanks for the reply, I'll definitely try those tactics. You seem to be suggesting that the updater SHOULD be recognizing the ipod and that there isn't a fundamental incompatibility -- am I reading that right?
