I'm amazed/surprised that as well thought out as the iPod is, that when docked, and when playing with power applied, it's not "smart enough" to keep the backlight on. I just wired the dock up to my home stereo, and plan to get an AirClick for remote operation. But to have no backlight when there's power to it, just makes no sense to me. Do any other docks work any differently? Is there a hack to change this behavior? Thanks.

Sadly, Apple is slipping. I dunno whether a third party gadget can command the POD to permanently light-on.

I am sure if you send in feedback to Apple, that maybe they will add an option to the settings menu that you can have the backlight always on when docked. Even if it takes time to be added, it's better than sitting with a thumb up your butt.

It would be nice to have it as an option, but remember a lot of pple use the dock to recharge the ipod battery. By leaving the backlight in your pretty much doubling or tripling the recharge time.

I agree that the backlight shouldn't just come on and stay on simply when the iPod is in the dock. I'd suggest that it come on and stay on if it's docked and playing. Better still add an option to the iPod settings menu: "Backlight on when docked and playing: Y/N".
