Hi,
I'm wondering how I can get the podcast listing to show in chronological order.
Thanks.

So I take it there is no way?

What exactly would you like it to do? What chronology are you looking for?

Currently the podcasts are listed in reverse chronological order (newest -> oldest).
I was wondering how to order them oldest -> newest.

Okay. There I might be able to help.
Check how they are ordered in iTunes. Reverse the order in iTunes by clicking on the date column, resync your iPod. Sometimes the order in iTunes is reversed on the iPod, so you may need to reverse in iTunes for syncing purposes.

Thanks for your help.
I've tried doing that (and all sorts of ordering), but still it lists in reverse chronological on the iPod. :(

Do you do an autosync or a manual sync?

Automatically sync selected podcasts.

I'm trying to figure it out. Not sure... I need to do some research...

Just trying to figure this out myself tonight. The nano's feature guide explicitly says that podcasts appear in reverse chronological order.
This seems quite strange to me. Clearly there are many podcasts that need to be listened to in *chronological* order -- just like a TV series. There needs to be a preference that lets the user choose chronological order for podcasts. On my commute I want to pick a show and listen to all shows in chronological order, not fiddle around with manually choosing them in chronological order.
BTW, I haven't tried this yet, but I did see an interesting workaround that uses the on-the-go playlist feature. See www dot danandchoka dot net.
I hope this iPod behavior changes soon.

I agree. This behaviour seems entirerly bassackward.
I've also got a related problem. If I select a podcast that has multiple episodes in it I can't get my Nano to move to the next episode. It stops playing after each one.
If I'm behind in my listening & suddenly have four or five episodes of a podcast, I'd like to listen to them in order and one right after the other. I don't see why I should be left back at the top menu and then have to navigate back after each episode. This is a real pain when your in traffic!
Hopefully someone will have figured out a trick for this.
Thanks in advance,
Richard.

Hi Richard,
I thought I gave answers to some of these issues in my post (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=739435#post739435) as a followup to your questions in the Books & Spoken Word forum. To cover some of the other questions:
To play a sequence of podcasts put them into a playlist. Since many people subscribe to a variety of different podcasts, having a default behavior where play continues to an entirely different podcast doesn't always make sense. So if you have a number of episodes that you want to play in succession, put them into a playlist, and play them from the playlist. You can even put them into a smart playlist and have playcount is 0 and have them automatically roll off your playlist the way that you do for your mp3 book sections.
Smart playlist for podcasts in reverse chronological order. I think my previously linked post (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=739435#post739435) covers this. It also gives the option of doing this with an On-the-Go playlist, as bababooey182 suggests. You can probably also do this by creating a regular play list, where you drag in entries in the order that you want. However, the neat this about the smart playlist is that you can make the episodes roll off the list automatically as you listen to them.
Make a playlist of podcasts. One way to do this is to go to your podcast listing under iTunes, select the range of podcast episodes that you want to listen to (e.g. highlight the first episode by selecting with right-click, then hold down your shift key and right-click on the last episode), and File-> New Playlist from Selection (keyboard shortcut is probably shift-ctrl-n on a PC; it's shift-cmd-n on a Mac). Name this playlist as you like --- I usually change the defaults.
Actually, I think you may even be able to rearrange this playlist the way you like, and then be able to play from the playlist in the order you choose. Try the following: With entries from your selected playlist (in the Source Column) displayed in main iTunes window, Right-click on the bar above the first column so that it turns blue, and an upward pointing arrow is displayed. (Entries in this column may be numbered 1,2,3, etc.) Now, select and drag entries into the order you want to listen to these; for example, if you want the 6th entry to appear second on the list, select it and drag it up to the second position. It should now be labeled "2". See whether this plays in this order on your nano.
I think that the trick of using copy to playlist order described in my earlier post (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=739435#post739435) should work for playing back podcasts in chronological order, too, and rolling episodes off as they are played from the smart playlist, but you may want to experiment with this. I don't have a nano myself. YMMV. Please read that link, since it was fairly detailed, and I don't want to repeat everything here.
Putting things into playlists allows you to take control of ordering. This also works in the different versions of iTunes (4.9, 5, and 6) whether or not your podcasts show up in your Music Library or not.
P.S. You may even be able to force ordering of a smart playlist with the forced drag and drop technique described above. Again, I haven't tried this one myself.
moriond,
Thanks again for all of the great info.
I think I have my Podcasts sorted out.
Richard.
