XP "losing" the iPOD

Hi - My son recently bought the color iPOD and hooked it up to my PC.

He seems to have it working but we have a frustrating problem - every now and again XP seems to "lose" the iPOD, cannot see it in Explore or My Computer

If you restart it is back but get's lost again very shortly

I have tried to update XP and iPod Tunes but it still happens

Any ideas?

I occasionally have this problem too. My solution: re-run the HP iPod installation software that came with the iPod and hope it's a while until it happens again.

what if its not an HP ipod?

I could be wrong here (and I probably am) but have you checked that enable for disk use is set to on....

my system automatically ejects the ipod after upate if it is set to off, and thus it does not appear in my computer

Have you any other external hard drives? sometimes windows doesn't like having too many HDs plugged in at once and will unmount them.
