I want to get this for my ipod in my explorer. Once connected, do I have to use the head unit to browse songs and stuff, or am i still able to do everything on the actual ipod?

You have to browse through the head unit, you can't browse on the iPod as long as it is plugged in.
You can however unplug the iPod temporarilly and browse on it, set the song to play and plug it back in. The head unit will play from where you left the iPod.

yeah that sucks. solution is an auxiliary cable and belkin auto kit
charges while you go, and lets you control the stuff through the ipod
