View Full Version : Question for those who run w/ Nano

I have a mini that I mainly use for runnning. I am not comfortable with using an arm band, so I use the belt clip that came with it and keep it clipped to the waistband of my shorts. I've been using it this way for about 5 months and I have had NO problems with skipping. Plus, I like that it is easily accessible if I want to change songs or adjust the volume.
My question is, for those who use the Nano for running, where do you keep it? I wouldn't want to hold it the whole time. Since it doesn't come with a clip, what do you do with it?

well, i don't run for exercise, i'm not quite sure. i just hate to see someone's post go unanswered.
the only thing i can think of right now is to buy a wristband and slide it in between. as ghetto as that may sound, it should work. desperate times call for desperate measures ya know.

I hate the armbands too....it just feels so restrictive along with making my ipod in an odd to reach at. As far as holding it, yeah I myself wouldnt want to hold it. And since Im guessing your running, you have sports shorts without pockets. Even if lets say they did have pockets, I dont think it would be a biggie if you put in the pocket of some mesh shorts, Id just be afraid of falling and having my thigh smash it. I mean I dont know about you, but I run on this grassy trail and ever so often there might be a divet in the ground or piece of little that causes me to trip. While it doesnt happen often, Id hate to see by Ipods death occur over such a blooper. So my advice...hmmm....what is my advice. The best think I could think of is maybe sewing in a back pocket that would lie on your back/butt so that way if you fell it wouldnt get rushed while at the sames time freeing up your hands. I know its probably not the best option and that someone will come up with somethign better, but its the first thing that comes to mind.

I don't see what's so wrong with the armband. I had a Sony mp3 player for about a week. I used the armband with it, and I thought it was great. I didn't haveany problems with the player itself, it was just the sonic stage software drove me crazy, so I had to return it, so I could order a nano. The Sony mp3 player I had seemed pretty heavy duty, and plus it was slightly elevated from your arm, so I didn't have to worry about sweat messing it up. The nano looks more fragile, and I'm not sure how the armband is for it. If you could have a cover on your nano and then slip it in the armband, I don't see what the problem would be.

I've run with various mp3 players over the years and have clipped them to my waistband forever. Then, because of this year's incredibly hot weather I decided to try out an armband because I was sweating on my mp3 players while they were on my waistband. I actually got used to the armband and found that I liked it just as much as having the player on my waist. I wrap the cord around where the player attaches to the armband if there is slack, then secure the cord under the velcro that tightens the armband. You've just got to be careful not to make it too tight, and you'll soon forget it's there. I can't say the position of the player is the easiest for access, but it's not bad.
I would not put the player into my short pockets. It would just bounce around in there and start to annoy me. I doubt any damage would occur as it's a flash player, afterall.
I am sure that lots of 3rd party companies will come out with belt clips and armbands to choose from.

I don't run however I would want a pivoting clip so I could set the nano on its side for ease of use and not pushing against me, like the ones used for cellphones...could always glue one of those after market ones to the ipod *IF YOU DARE* :o
Better yet wait for cases to come out get a cheap one with either a belt clip or do the same glue one of those aftermarket clips for cellphones to the case so you dont mar the surface of your ipod

What about a lanyard? Would the nano be too heavy to have it hanging from your neck?

I would think it bouncing around on your chest would get annoying..well to me it would.

I run about 30 to 40 miles a week (one 10 mile or more run a week). I buy running shorts with pockets and just put in my pocket. Also use the same method when working out at the gym. So far sweet has not had any effect on the Nano. Used a Shuffle before and have even ran several times in the poring rain (I'm hard core) without a problem. I hope the Nano will do as well.
I tried an arm band on my full size iPod but hated everything about it. Don't like the pretentious look of around the neck and would not like the bouncing.

Have you seen the Speck Skin Tight Deluxe (http://speckproducts.com/nano-skintight-deluxe.html). I have one pre-ordered and it sounds like it would work great for you. Of course you'd have to wait about a month or more, but there isn't much out there right now. And I'm with you, I hate the arm band cases and I love to just clip it to my gym shorts (though I don't run, but I do lift and use the elliptical machines and bike). Right now, I'm using gym shorts with pockets and it works okay, but the shorts are cotton so they make me hot. I like my nylon (whatever basketball players wear) mesh shorts because they keep me cooler. So I'd say check out the Speck case until something better comes out.

Currently training for a marathon and running a ton. Used to hold my 30G iPod in my hand. Got the Apple armband for lack of anything else on the market and while I didn't think I would, I love the thing. Very liberating. And I barely feel the weight of the nano on my arm - it is almost like there is nothing there at all. I highly recommend it. But if you absolutely can't stand it, hold out for what speck has to offer in their cases next month and you should have a good belt clip alternative

Would the arm band fit around my head? Like a head band.. I hate the thought of wearing around my arm.. I don't understand how people can lift weights with an arm band on...

Lothien (and other runners): How do you protect your nano from sweat? I'm also a distance runner and I'm afraid an arm-band would still be in harm's way.

When I clipped my flash player to my shorts, it got covered in sweat. Now with it no my arm, it comes out of every run totally dry.

I just bought my wife the nano and the incase armband setup. I have the incase armband setup for my 4g 60gig photo and I like it alot. I dont have a problem lifting weights witht he armband either. As long as its not too tight. The neoprene flexes enough for my muscle to do its cycle without becoming constricted (My arm goes from 14" relaxed to 16" flexed). Im happy enough with it. I just need to get a "hubcap" or whatever they are called for the wheel as thats the only part left open on the 4g. I think the nano case from incase has added a cover for the wheel.
Please note that there is a 4-6 week lead time on the incase sport case from Apple at this time!

Ok I would love and armband but heres my delima: I just got a nano and bought apples armband (liked the size and the "breathing holes" but when it arrived it does not fit around my bicept!!! I am in pretty good shape and my arms are prolly what I concentrate on the most when working out. So what is out there for people who really work out and have bigger arms then the 15 year old running down the street? Thanks guys love the site btw!
