View Full Version : Can anybody recommend a good cell phone for AT&T/Cingular (emphasis on "phone")?

Ok, here's the situation:

I currently have a defective LG1150 cell phone for use on the AT&T network. There is a short or something in the phone that causes a fully charged battery to drain in a few hours. I have tried several different batteries and have concluded it's definitely a problem with the phone.

The problem is that now that AT&T has merged with Cingular, there are no more "AT&T phones." So, my only option is to "switch" to Cingular and get a new Cingular phone. The reason that is a problem is that my wife and I are on a family plan with AT&T and my wife's phone still works (and was pretty expensive). If I switch to Cingular in order to get a new phone, my wife would have to switch to Cingular and we'd have to get her a new phone too. That seems like a huge waste of money since her phone works properly.

So, it appears to me that the only good solution is to buy an unlocked phone on eBay that can replace mine. From my understanding of unlocked phones, I can get any phone that uses a SIM card; therefore, any phone that works with AT&T, Cingular or T-Mobile.

However, I want to make sure I get a good one. What I'd like is a phone with a super long lasting battery. I don't care much about whether it has a camera or video capabilities. I don't care if it can play MP3 ringtones or any of that kind of stuff. I just want a high quality phone with a long lasting battery.

Anybody have any recommendations?

P.S. Sorry for the long story, but I just wanted to explain my situation fully.

I got a black Motorola Razr about two months ago and am quite satisfied. I was a T-Mobile customer for 4 years but switched to Cingular because of better coverage. My reception is fine. If you look carefully you can find one for free after rebate (usually a 2yr committment with 6 months of continuous service). Mine also included a free Bluetooth earpiece.

The battery is lasting two to three days between charges and I use the LCD a lot for web access.

I had a Sony Ericsson T637, before my Treo, and it was rock solid. If you like "brick" style phones, give this a look.

And yes, I use Cingular, and no, it doesn't suck..............

Funny you should mention the T637. I've been doing some research today trying to find a phone with a long lasting battery and the consensus is that the T637 is about as good as you can get. I'm likely going to buy that one. Thanks.

I went ahead and bought the T637 and, you're right, it is rock solid. This is a great phone. I haven't even needed to charge it again since I bought it -- the battery life is amazing.

If I didn't have my heart set on a Treo, thats what I would have stuck with. The Bluetooth is actually better on that phone......
