View Full Version : Almost a great Nano case solution

I was wandering around Best Buy looking for cases and ran across a hard case for removable media made by Lowe Pro. The model is called the PixelPak V1. It's a hard shell, metal case with rubberized holding spots inside. It also comes with an insert for a PCMCIA card. I picked one up for $15. It's just barely too small, it needs to be mabye 10mm longer. Being that it's a hard rubber, I would think it would be fairly easy to cut away enough rubber for it to work. It might be a challenge developing a hole for a headphone out. I also haven't heard anything about whether the Nano puts off any heat, ventilation could be a problem.

This seems like it has a lot of possibilities. I would be interested in hearing from people a good way to trim away some of the rubber inside. It would probably be fairly easy to develop a foam insert for inside of it.

Sony had a similar case for $20, but it was made only for memory sticks. It might be possible to modify it, but I thought I'd try the LowePro case. The Sony looked nicer.

I couldn't find the product on the LowePro website. If I can play with it tonight I'll try to post pictures.

Enlarging the case??

I would whip out my dremel and make a mess. Up to you though

The rubber is too soft to use a dremel on, I tried working on it with a utility knife last night and it didn't work real well. What I'm thinking is finding some of that dense, white packing foam (the plastic kind, not the styrafoam kind). I think cutting that to fit would work well.

I have some pictures, I'll try to post them later if I can figure out how.

That's without any modifications. Cutting away the rubber for it to fit seems pretty tedious. I'm going to see if I can remove the rubber inserts from both sides, then take some foam padding (like what is used in a camera case) and super glue that inside.

What looks like black around the outside is actually a smoke colored translucent plastic. Should be easy to modify for a headphone out.

It's a bit bigger than I'd like and it's not super slick looking. I would guess we'll see hard shell cases for the Nano that'll be better than this.

I think what I'd really like to see is a case like the sport case for the Shuffle, that would be my ideal case for the Nano.
