View Full Version : Windows pagefile size when synching

I have the new 30gb Ipod and I am using MMJB 7.5 to synch on WIndows XP pro. When I am synching the Windows pagefile climbs to 1.5gb and has to be resized causing an error message. It appears to synch successfully and there is nothing wrong with the music on the Ipod I just dont think that MMJB needs that kind of virtual memory to operate normally.

Has anyone else noticed this?

It's just buggy and badly-written generally. I'm using EphPod, which is free and works well. Others have also recommended Media Centre 9, which also handles ripping, so I'll probably give that a try.

But see the other forums here - lots of people have junked MMJB.

I'm working with MM tech support now to find out why I keep running out of VM when I sync. I have a new 15GB iPod and I've been having problems with MM since the beginning. Eventually I'm going to buy a Powerbook, so I don't want to buy MC like everyone around here recommends. I tried Ephpod, but I like the way MM has ripping, burning, syncing (albeight it not great) tied into one package.

Last night I uninstalled MM, restored my iPod to default settings, and reinstalled MM. The first sync worked great, but after that it's back to eating up a ton of memory. It hasn't failed again, but I watched it eat up the page file. The funny thing is that it looks like the MMPortables program tries to release the memory, but it doesn't. You have to exit out of MM before you can get all the memory back that it is using. I'll write back if tech support is any help.

Thank you for your replies. I am glad that I am not the only one having problems like this. I installed Ephpod but have not had a chance to try it out.

Please let us know what MM tech support says. I am anxiously waiting for ITunes for Windows...

After a few days of silence from MM tech support, I finally heard some good news. The email started out with the typical "we're watching this issue..." (I emailed links to multiple discussion groups with people having this problem), but it ended with a link to a new version of MMJB. The tech didn't assure me of anything, but suggested that I try to install a "new" version of MMJB. He promised that version 7.50.3103 was newer than 7.50.5002 (the version shipped with the iPod) despite the numbering.

I installed the "upgrade" and away I went. The first sync typically worked fine, but the second, third, fourth, and fifth syncs worked WELL too. I ripped a bunch of cds in between syncing, deleted songs from the iPod, updated tags on files in my library, and it still worked!!!! There was a noticable difference in the running processes when it was going too - the ipod service was actually doing all the work, and the mmportables process wasn't using any extra memory at all.

I highly suggest everyone try this before dumping MM. It may not be the best overall program out there, but at least give a working version a spin.

Good luck :D

portersa, where exactly did you download it from? Can you post a link? Is it an ipod support page or directly from www.musicmatch.com?

I dl it from a MM site. I emailed the tech to see if it was publically available. I did notice that MM v8 is out now, so I don't know if that will fix the problem too. I am going to give 8 a try tonight. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I couldn't get MMJB 8 to work. I had to uninstall 8, reinstall 7.50.5002 (version on iPod cd) and then upgrade/downgrade to 7.50.3103 again. I had the same issues with 8 that were happening before, so I wouldn't waste your time with it. Other than a new default theme, I didn't see any differences.

I've just tried syncing my new 30gig iPod on my second machine and have encountered the MMJB memory problem on both of them.

If anyone else has had any success with the new version, please post. If the link becomes available I'll try it and then report back.

Chas.

I gave MM Tech Support a chance to say "don't post this" and they didn't. So...here's the link that I got from MM -

You can download the 7.50.3103 release of MusicMatch Jukebox now from the
following link:

http://partners.musicmatch.com/archive/mmsetup_7.50.3103_ENU.exe

I encourage everyone who is having a problem with MM to give this version a shot. It will ask if you want to install an older version, just say yes and you should be all set.

Post your results when you're done. Enjoy
:D

Thanks portersa...

I downloaded the new "old" version and installed it. All went well and I tried a sync. Everything seemed okay until I checked the number of song on MMJB (3627) against the iPod (3608). Further checking on the iPod revealed that several playlists were missing songs and a couple of playlists were missing all songs.

I decided to Restore my iPod and ran into an issue where it wouldn't dismount at the end of the restore. I finally got it to dismount and it looked to be at a factory state.

I then did another sync, and this time while it looked like all went well, now there are blank playlists on the iPod and NO songs loaded. A resync didn't resolve this. I think I've seen others report this problem, but if anyone has any ideas while I'm searching the forum I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Chasmm

After countless tries to get MMJB to work (a version, ANY version), I decided to give Ephpod a shot. It works, but it's still not what I'm looking for.

At this point, I'm very frustrated with Apple...I know they don't make MMJB, but Apple has chosen them as their software provider for the Windows iPods and are thus responsible. If I weren't so enamored with the 30gig iPod, I would have returned it due to all the problems I had with it.

It's absolutely amazing how different the experience was with the 20 gig v2 Ipod and MMJB, and now this one. When my friends and co-workers ask me about it now, I can't recommend it any longer.

I was having the same problem and your fix worked for me...looks like I have some duplicates in my ipod now, however I can sync again without gettig memory errors. You rule.
