I would like to connect my iPod mini to my car, but here in Canada, I'm worried about the extreme weather changes. It can go from 40 C to -40 C. Is it ok for my iPod to stay in the car at those ranges? I could put it in my glove box, not sure if that's of much help. But I'd prefer not to have to carry my iPod everwhere I go when I leave the car.

Do not expose your iPod to extreme conditions. I live just across the lake from you and last winter made the horrible mistake of leaving my iPod in the truck overnight. The screen froze (not computer lingo, actually froze solid). I was lucky to thaw it, but the rainbow effect increased since. And I'm sure cooking it can be no better.

Whatever your auto setup might be, make sure the iPod is removable..............

-40C would be bad. +40C would be ok - as long as not baking under the windshield.

Well maybe not -40C but lets say between -20 and -30C, not sure if that helps. And on the hot side, I'd say into 30+C for sure. I'd be putting it in my glove box so it snot in direct sun light.

Your liquid crystal display may freeze solid at those temps. Do a google search on "liquid crystal display freeze (or freezing)" and you'll get a bunch of hits by people taking their fish finders ice fishing, gps receivers hiking in the winter, etc...

So down to what temperature is it OK to leave the Ipod in the Car?

This piece of info must be in the spec section of the manual(?).

And u call yourselves Canadians :)

Do what professional photographers do, they store their sensitive films in coolers during transport.

If u don't feel like taking one of those lunchbox cooler with u, insulate your console box and make it hermetically sealed when closed, a bit of work but that's the ticket.

True. You found out about our laziness. My manual states:

• Operate your iPod in a place where the temperature is always between 0º and 35º C
(32º to 95º F).
• Store your iPod in a place where the temperature is always between –20º and 45º C
(–4º to 113º F). Don’t leave iPod in your car, since temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

I have have had this experience in my stock 2002 Acura 3.5 RL system with the Griffin Smart Deck Once it got cold. After a few seconds it starts to sounded like the tape deck wis trying to auto-reverse the "tape", then it goes tries to change direction 2 or 3 times then ejects the cassette adaptor. When its warm, it works great. My daughter has the same exp with her $19 Sony adaptor & her 1999 stock Taurus system.

Is anybody else having the same issues?

I know heat hasn't caused any damage visually to our ipod. It's left in the car all the time during summer, and it must be 50 C + in there, considering it's up to 36 + outside. We now have our own undercover car parking, but for the last 3 odd years the car was parked in the full sun all day with the ipod inside.

But I do think it affects the life of the battery. That particular ipod, out of all of our others, does have significantly less battery life, and they were purchased at the same time.

So it seems the cold would be more of an issue. Maybe during really cold weather, better not take any chances.

i made the mistake of leaving my ipod in my car overnight on a really cold night in CT and after that everything went downhill and i eventually it had to get replaced

not sure if it was an isolated incident but i know that i will never leave my iPod in anyplace that can be very cold again

Dry cold should be OK, as long u let it warm back up gradually. Next time, take a FREEZER ziplock bag to the car, immediately swith on the HOLD button to avoid turn-on, stick the iPod in there, making sure it's positively SEALED, then bring in to a room that's not too warm, say 40-50 fahenheit. Let it sit there for 24 hrs. After than bring the whole thing again into the living room, up to ~68F or so? and again let it sit for 24 hrs.

I live in New England where it is not quite as cold, but I just take it inside with me. It's all of a fraction of a second to pull it off the car charger and drop it in my bag. Then I know it won't get too hot, won't get too cold, and won't get stolen.

i left my ipod in my car straight for 2 years. it took two years to break. it worked fine up until the beginning of 2006 summer. what made the iPod give in was the extreme summer heat.

didnt really care. now i have a new 30 gig!

Just recently I left my 20GB 4G iPod in the car while I was at work. The temperature was only around 20º F so easily in the range of storing conditions that Apple recommends. However, when I went to lunch I went to listen to it and it said the battery was dead (I had over 50% battery when I got to work). I tried to reset it and it still said no battery power. When I got back from lunch I took it inside with me. About an hour later I looked at it and the battery meter was back up to where it should have been. However, there were no songs on the iPod. I took it home that night and plugged it into my computer, iTunes restored all the songs and all is working fine again.

I now take my iPod inside during colder weather.
