Evnin all. This is my first post.

I recently got the iPOD sad face on my 20G iPOD (that I purchased in December 2004). So I called apple. They collected it a day later. The next week they sent a new iPOD out to me.

Happy?

Well .....not really.

When I took the 20G iPOD out of packaging I noticed that the brand new shiny iPOD looked much thicker than my original one I sent back. Have I gone mad? I'm almost 100% sure that the one I sent was more slim. Are there two types?

Im sorry if the answer is obvious to you guys, but I'm not that 'clued-up' on all the variations of 20g iPOD.

Ps the one I have is just the basic iPOD, no pics..etc.

I believe they also made a 40GB 4G iPod. I think you lucked out and got double the capacity

eh?

Im talking about the dimensions of the iPOD. The one I have now is thicker than the one I sent to service.

In order to be thicker, its a higher capacity iPod. Or, you got an older generation iPod, but I think you would definitely notice that right away, since the controls would be different.

now thats lucky. i had the opposite happen. i ordered a 20gig 4G ipod and two came... i wasnt there when the delivery guy picked up the extra ipod. i left my housemate in charge but forgot to remind him to get proof of collection. the company insisted i hadnt sent it back and i was charged the full price for two ipods. £430 at the time!

im not bitter however, it was my fault and ive definitely got my moneys worth from my ipod, even at twice the price

Have you plugged it into your computer?

Have you looked to see what it says on the back of the iPod?

If it is a thicker 4G iPod, then I conclude that it MUST be a 40 GB (unless you can prove me wrong).

Thanks for the reply guys.

Here's a bit more info.

It has the 20GB on the back
If you go into 'settings' then into 'about', it says its capacity is 18.5gb and the model number M9282B. So that all seems correct. Ther version says 3.1

But i still think that the housing of the iPod is thinker in depth.

Everything else is the same as the original iPod i sent, ie Hold button on top right, touch sensative wheel...etc[B]

well, it is possible (although not likely) that apple placed one of the new backings from the 20gb color iPods onto your B/W iPod. This would account for the size increase.

measure the iPod and compare it to the current standards on the Apple website. There is a chance that it really isn't any thicker. Take it to a best buy or something and compare with the floor model, etc. Of course make sure you are comparing the apple to the apple, if you know what I mean.

Yes, it is indeed thicker than the original ipod I sent. I've compared it to two friends ipods.

It would apear that I have the same casing as a 20g Colour ipod with the insides of the thinner 20g B&W ipod.

So 'moe_4eva's' theory is spot on.

Would anyone here complain about that?

To be honest I don't think I will, as I cant go another day without my ipod (the whole service process took about 2 weeks), so I guess I'll just keep it. Plus my original ipod was looking a bit worn, with a lot of surface marks on the metallic surface.

definitely complain! say you ordered a 20gig colour and they sent b&w by mistake lol

Here are apples official dimension specifications.
Dimensions (mm) 104 x 61 x 19 - 20g Colour
Dimensions (mm) 104 x 61 x 16 - 20g B&W

Yeah. I've had a think about this.

Just called Apple. After much talking they have accepted that they made a mistake. So I'm now waiting for the return box to send this ipod back.

The more I think about this, the more it bugs me. Im very unhappy with how unproffesional the service dept have been so far.
