Anyone have this? I have an onkyo surround sound system and I was wondering if this is worth it. From what I gather, I can charge my IPOD, interface my IPOD and control my IPOD...hmm...any thoughts to anyone who has it?

A quick search through this forum (top of the screen, search function) reveals several posts about the Onkyo.

I am too looking for a stereo interface, and I don't own the onkyo. A quick look at the Onkyo site mentions no screen interface, this only can mean u can't tell what the iPOD is doing, and the remote control can only do transport functions: STop, Play, Last Track, Next Track.

I am more interested in an interface where I can see/control playlists and other iPOD functions. The iPOD is *already* a remote with everything built-in, so to me, a bluetooth sender/receiver is more powerful and natural solution, like the Belkin's TuneStage. I just wish it plugs into the bottom of the iPOD (direct line out) than through the headphone's jack.

Check out the new Pioneer receiver VSX-74TXVi it has built in Ipod controls and with an antenna XM controls that show up on your screen. There is a review for it in the new Sound and Vision.

I read about this system too *drool*
I only hope it will ever be available in Europe!

Otherwise I don't think someone with an Onkyo suround system will spend that much money on a new reference-system by pioneer

Spending usd$1,700 for a Receiver just so that one can plug an iPOD to it, now that beats the usd$500 earsphones.

I would rather spend that money for an HTPC, then the stereo will have direct access to your entire music collection + video + Internet feed.

Turning on the TV just to play music is wrong to me, call me eccentric.

Why should you have to turn the TV on??
I looked it up... it connects via s-video!
dunno how the sound is then... we left the yellow cinch plug out because our tv makes annoying noises when trying to recieve the non-existing video-signal...
hm... what would be displayed on the screen then?

It's not "just" to plug an iPod on it... that would be silly!
You have excelent suround-sound for DVDs and CDs as well...
(yes I know CDs are recorded in stereo)
But controlling you iPod from the couch with a display on the remote-control
would be a cool thing!!
500$-Headphones for the iPod are much less useful!

I would consider this one as an alternative if our ampliphier would suddenly break! Well... as my boyfriend wants to be responible for the whole Home-Hifi (including paying for it) it's easy for me to say it - but I'm sure he would definitly buy this one if we would need a new ampliphier !
But I'm sure this amplifier would take the best out of the iPod!

Should we open a new thread?

P.S. it's not S-Video ...
I was like: round, holes... s-video... ;)

S-video has 7 poles while this cable has 20 poles... shame on me... I just got a lesson from my boyfriend that went like "Everyone who knows a bit about technics knows that s-video has 7 poles ... and s-video doesn't tranpher audio only picture..."
It must be a special cable!

I like this system but we already have a simular system only 2 years older and I doubt it'll break anytime soon!

Hehe, just to be picky..... s-video actually only has 4 pins so you can tell your boyfriend he doesn't really fall into the category of "Everyone who knows a bit about technics" :)

but in his defense, I've seen some s-video-esqe connectors that have more than 4 pins, the rest were probably to transfer other stuff ontop of the 4 s-video pins.... but even these types of connections tend to be compatible with s-video since the 4 s-video pins still match up.

'Cuz the playlist selection etc are displayed on your TV. Of course you don't HAVE TO, but as u said, it wouldn't be cool without it.

As my first post above mentioned, I much prefer to get a TuneStage, ALOT cheaper, total iPOD control, works with ANY stereo, AND no turning on TV needed.

Thanks... I'll tell him... and I'm looking forward to his response...

As for turning the TV on...
if you say so must be so... because someone else said something different but someone else knows nothing! *shrug*
I read it like: you can see the song-titles on the LCD-display of the remote... but you know... I know less then nothing!

Tune-stage sounds like a cool thing but you have to carry around the iPod everywhere to control it...
Pro: total acess to iPod
Contra: Danger to "hurt" the iPod!

I downloaded the manual and read the iPOD chapter and didn't see that reference of yours. It just says do it easier from TV or on the Receiver's front panel (front panel has a single line display). But hey, get one and let us know how great this receiver is huh.

No worry, this is my third job after college. To us men, an excuse to upgrade!

The Elite-series not available in Europe... and none of the european modells has the iPod-port!

And this whole discussion is soooo OT... (I know I started it ... sorry)

I really have to shut up again... I annoyed everyone enough with my incompetence!

Like I said before, the standard s-video cable has 4 pins.

1 = Luminance ground
2 = Chrominance ground
3 = Luminance (Y) + sync
4 = Chrominance (C)

The apple 7 pin one (or however many pin ones) aren't standard, they usually have extra signals on there for whatever reason. Sometimes they carry a separate composite signal, sometimes something else, I can only guess what apple is using the extra 3 pins for. But if you plug in a standard 4 pin s-video cable into the apple dock and it will work.
