Does anyone know what the highest level of volume you can have on your ipod without harming your ears?

Well depends on what headphones you have. Just turn it up to about 1/2 to 3/4 or so. Any higher with most headphones you will hurt you ears.

The safe volume is always much less than 100db, which is very easy to achieve (and exceed) on an iPod. But how you're able to hear the music at whatever volume will depend to a large extent on ambient noise and how it reacts with your earphones / music.

It is very possible while commuting for example to drive head/earphones past a safe limit while trying to overcome background noise. But this is common sense of course and the only people doing this are those who don't think enough.

Phones with a nominal amount of passive isolation such as the Sennheiser PX100, Sony EX71 and AKG K26P will certainly help to lower your effective volume, since if the level of background noise you're hearing is less, then you don't have to turn up your phones so much.

The best solutions would be the Shure E2c and higher-end in-ear phones with foam tips, or highly isolating headphones such as the Sennheiser HD25-1.

safe volume < 85 SPL @ 4 hours or less.
