View Full Version : Question on Decalgirls

I know the decalgirls has a 3 piece cover for the nano. I'm guessing this means it covers the front, back, and the center of the clickwheel. My question is does it actually cover the sides? Thanks guys.

I think it's front, back, and a screen protector. Nothing for the sides I guess.

IntegraRC is right on the three pieces, but I don't know if it covers the sides - I am guessing that it might wrap around a little but not cover them completely. Maybe you should email them for details

No, i dont think those cover the sides beacuse those are SKINS, not WRAPS. They sell wraps for ipod mini's, now those cover the sides.

I sent them an email to confirm the "3 pieces" and the skins do not include a screen protector. It's a separate product "Screen Armor".
They have also just added a fourth piece: "We started doing a new piece to cover the clickwheel as of today's production runs; the website images will be updated soon to show the additional piece on the face of the clickwheel." He sent me a pic and it looks pretty cool:

I sent a reply asking about the sides but haven't heard back yet.

From Ryan @ decalgirl:
"We're not doing the sides as the side pieces were almost impossible to apply. Having it as one full unit also made it much more difficult to do and caused problems with docking."

NP! I'm just as anxious as everyone else to get something to protect my nano. It seems like just looking at it seems to add another scratch. Even the clickwheel will show smudges or scuffs made with nails. :( It seems even worse than the other iPods, or maybe it's just the black that makes every "nano" scratch more obvious.

Yeah, I'm definitely going white, then probably going to get that white and blue fire and water skin that they have.

Mine arrived this morning. I put on the tubular one and it looks rather snazy, though i do prefer the plain black. I have one of the invisible shields on its way, so if nothing else, the decalgirl one will give that wee bit of protection (if not of screen and wheel) until that arrives.
Here is a picture....

wow, that looks really good. did they send anything for the click wheel?
talksalot81

Nope..... that seems to have been an addition after my order.....I have the invisible shield coming as well.... so assuming that the removal of the current skin doesnt destroy it, i will then reapply it on top of the invisible shield..... maybe!

good point, integra
however, the lifetime guarantee is only good if you plan on keeping your nano, i guess
i kind of see myself selling it when the next big thing comes from apple, sans video ipod
so, for example, if the next nano that comes out is the same exact physical size but comes in something like 8gb and 20 hrs battery (pleasepleaseplease), then i'd definitely go for it.
i guess, since the nano is a new product line, the chance of the nano sticking around (but with the same dimensions?) is pretty good. but then again, look at the mini...
IntegraRC

yeah, i heard that they might be able to fit 2 more gigs in the nano, but they might have to have a new design to fit 8. I guess ya could always try to transfer the case guarentee to whoever ya sell it to. Who knows, it might make it more appealing.

It wasnt difficult other than actually getting the skin properly aligned before you stuck it down. I doubt it would come off in your pocket, to be honest im more concerned about whether it will come off easily when the invible shield skin arrives!

I'm planning on doing the same as you, talksalot81, apply the invisibleshield first and then some other skin on top. Just haven't gotten around to ordering the shield yet.. read the application instructions and one can't but be a little scared about using soapy water on a nano!
It's a small amount apparently, but still...
Will you post pics when you've applied it?

I bought a nano decal for mine... It took me awhile to get it aligned, but it definitely has already taken one for the team when it slid off my desk, so I'm happy I had it. I bought mine within the first few days they were offered and there were only about 30 to choose from. Now there about 70+ and I see she's got screen protectors, too! I'll be placing another order this week. I wish they had full body wraps, but oh well... And I had to pull mine off and reapply it, because I wasn't content with the positioning, and it re-stuck just fine, and left no goo behind.
final analysis...worth the 5.99. It just sucks to pay almost an equal amount in shipping.

I just ordered the clear decals for my Nano because the "Don't Steal Music" wrapper is starting to trap lint and dust under it and I'm worried that may scratch it. I'll just use it until my Speck case comes in (already have that pre-ordered).

i was gonna go for the invisible shield but a lot of people here have been quite wary of how risky it is to apply (the amount of water used) and the high price (i know theres a guarantee but i dont plan on keeping this nano for life anyway...) so the decalgirl crystal shield clear skins seem to be the best bang for the buck, in terms of price and durability.
i'd absolutely love to hear a review of them once you get it. specifically i'd like to know how easy it is to apply and align correctly.. and also how durable they are for just fitting in your pocket and maybe if you accidentally throw a couple cents into your pocket with the nano in the same pocket (with the skin on, of course)

Too risky to me. Plus I already have a preorder for a Speck SkinTight Deluxe case, so this skin will just hold me over until it ships in about a month.
I've had a decal for my Shuffle and it was very easy to apply, so I'm sure this will be too. It's been on about 9 months now and it still looks new, so I'm assuming these are durable too. I haven't needed to remove it, so I can't say anything about that, but they constantly claim on their site that they are repositionable and won't leave a residue, so I wouldn't anticipate a problem.

Well, I sold my Shuffle to a co worker and she removed the decal and it did leave some residue behind. With the Shuffle though, it was easy to just rub it and it came right off. I'm sure a tiny bit a Goo Gone would have worked too. Now, on the nano, I would hope it would come easy too if it left any residue.

Hopefully, but more likely I think in the process of rubbing the goo of it might scratch the ipod...

I just ordered the screen shields, the crystal clear skin and the burlwood skin.
With the way things are going with Apple and their rediculous shipping times, I'll probably receive the skins before I get my Nano... which is a good thing, because I'd more than likely just open er up without the skins then regret it... :)
Anyone from Canada order from decalgirl? Shipping seems to be overpriced.. I emailed them about that and they explained it's because they ship with UPS. But then I added the crystal clear skin to my cart and it added another $0.75 for shipping... as if! If it's $8.50, it should remain $8.50... I mean, come on..... they're just sheets of stickers.
oh well.. still worth the investment, at least my Nano will be protected. Any case other than a silicone skin will still scratch it. Especially the ones with a screen cover.. the Incase I had for my 3rd gen scratched and marked the he** outta of the screen.

I just got my Decalgirl's crystal shield and screen armor and applied it to my black nano.
I ended up not using the screen armor at all coz the crsytal shield's front piece is a full piece that covers the screen and click wheel as well.
The hardest part in the application was getting it lined up. On the back piece, it looks ok. On the front however, the black nano shows every inperfection in the sticking process. Every small air pockets shows up so clearly.
I wore latex gloves in the whole application process to make sure I dont leave and print or oil marks so those were not a problem. But the air pockets were very obvious. I tries as best as I could to press them out first with a credit card, then with a piece of smooth flat foam board. Still you can totally see there's a plastic film on the ipod.
Because the front sheet covers the indented click wheel too, the area around the wheel are the worst air pocket spots. The instructions say that a few second on the hair dryer should smooth things out. I tried that but it didnt do a thing.
At least it's some form of protection for now ... so i'm not complaining too much.
If someone figures out a way to correct this, please post.

thanks for your review, i was looking forward to hearing about someone's experience with the crystal shield, as they were my best option for protection given price and performance
however, it makes the nano look and feel even worse? hmm
can you feel the air trapped spots on the surface?
and are there any other imperfections that show up besides air pockets?
does it stay on the nano firmly? is there a risk of the shield coming off by slipping in and out of your pocket?
also, can you take photos and post them here? i think that would give people a better idea of what it looks like

ok Gouged for your questions.
When I touch the nano now ... feels like i'm touching a plastic film ... not as nice to handle as it without the film, but the click wheel and buttons still function very well.
Nope, cant really feel the tran air since the air traps around the rim of the click wheel and smoothly tapers in towards the center button.
The air pockets kinda hides all other imperfections, so its kinda hard to tell?
The film stays on pretty well, the weak parts will be the edges which seem to hold up well now, but then again, it was applies a few hours ago. The film will come off if the edge snags on material in ur pocket and while u r taking it out or putting it in. Theres not much excess film on the edge, but u can still feel something when u run ur finger over the edge. I cant tell if over time the edg will lose its stickyness and start pealing off.

All vinyl is definitely not created equal. I got some decals on eBay from VinylSkins which I put on last week. They left a ton of glue behind when I took them off this morning. I spent about an hour cleaning glue off the front of my nano (and of course creating more scratches in the process). Ugh...
I received my decals from DecalGirl this morning and so far my results have been so so. The first decal I tried to apply was a black one. It didn't end up looking that great and the "coating" they apply to protect the decal ended up peeling off in a corner. I wasn't too happy it so I took that off. No glue was left behind. :)
I applied the other decal I got from DecalGirl, and this one looks a lot better. I left the ClickWheel decal from the black skin. Here are some pictures:

I have to say that I was expecting something better for the Screen Armor. There's a texture to the vinyl so the screen looks distorted... I'm going to keep looking for a screen cover, but the I'm pretty happy with the colored skins so far. Stay away from the black.

Crystal shields are made out of the worst quailty which explains why its so cheap. they make ur nano look like crap. I bought these applied it, and kept it until i bought a Capdase protectors from ebay. When i was taking it off the adhesive were left on my ipod, and i had to literally scratch it off, which scrathced my ipod. On the other hand capdase protectors are really awsome.. they are really invisible

It was kind of a pain to get on, but I wanted mine to sit perfectly... It's not rocket science or anything, just takes a good eye and a steady hand. Oh, and I had to peel mine all the way off and put it back on, and it adhered just fine. I'm definitely satisfied with my purchase, and I'll probably get another, just to change up the look in another month or two.

Let me say that i was really unhappy with how hard it was to put the front skin on, the back is very easy but to manuver it around the screen and click will was a pain. It a good thing they are cheap but i wouldn't recommend buying them its way to hard to make it look perfect

Got my Decalgirl 2 days ago, just finished putting them on to my nano.
Well, it was so hard to put in on nano, to put these skins perfectly to you nano is really hard. and when u grab them to put it on, it leaves fingerprints. My back one is ok, eventhough the corner part keeps coming off (I don't know why) and the front part is fine except the screen. It kinda messes up the screen, where it is hard to look at the screen when the backlight is off. I wouldn't recommend people to buy these. I bought 2 (1 for me, 1 for a friend), and thought it was kinda waste of money. Well I just leaves these on until I get some silicon case.

That's how mine looks, gouged.
I'm pretty dissapointed in it.
Honestly, a PSP static screen protector I used was much better, but once I took it off to put the decalgirl ones on, it attracted dust, so I haven't put them back.
Can't wait for a solid case.

Decalgirl is TERRIBLE. They don't look good, they are hard to apply, after a few days of use it is already peeling up since it doesn't exactly fit right. Also the screen protectors leave part of the screen exposed. A small sliver but nonetheless exposed. All they had to do was size them a little bit larger to cover the whole screen -- instead they just put out a product that is inferior.
However cheap...SAVE YOUR MONEY!
