I have a 4th Gen 20GB ....my problem, is i have had this Ipod for about 9 months....i just went through my 2nd pair of ear buds...it seems i have blown the speakers in them again.....i play my ipod on Full volume all the time...i want to be able to play my iPod with the vloume turned all the way up but i don't want to have to keep buying earbuds every few months ....is there a way i can adjust the settings on my ipod so they don't blow out again....BTW the description im giving when i say they blew out is they start to crackle a lot when i play my iPod with the volume turned up this makes listening rather annoying . I hope this describes the problem i'm having . Thanks

Playing your iPod at high (especially full) volumes for a long time (or all the time) is bound to break any pair of headphones, whether it's the cheap earbuds that came with your iPod, or a $300+ audiophile pair. They're just not designed for that kind of volume.

The only real way to reduce the chances of breaking the headphones again is simply playing your music at a much lower volume. It's also very important to protect your hearing--headphones are very easily replaceable, but your ears are not.

I have a suggestion. When you are playing a song, turn your music down. PLaying music too loud for too long ruins the drivers in ur headphones, hence the crackling noise. IT ruins the headphones and your ears. Look in to some in-ear headphones to isolate you from outside noises so you can listen to music at the same level at lower noise levels. With in ear buds you have to be more careful about your hearing because the drive is closer to your ear and you can hurt your hearing more.

There are 2 things i can think of: 1. your hearing is very bad... and i really don't think people with hearing impairments are the best users of mp3 players; or 2. u really like loud music in which case you will very soon have a hearing impairment
Anyway... maybe you could try canal phones. They get a lot closer to the eardrum and that's why they have louder levels of sound without going all the way up on volume. It's just that I REALLY REALLY advise you not to listen to your music so loud anymore
