When I click on Music Store in iTunes (windows XP pro) I get the following error:
"We could not complete your Music Store request. There is not enough memory available. There was an error in the Music Store. Please try again later. OK"
The Radio works...
Maybe the Music Store is overloaded??? I have 768mb RAM so I don't think it is my computer....??
Anyone else get this message?
Thanks.

Same here - I have over a gig. Windows XP Pro with all current patches. I'm going to update my laptop to see if it experiences the same problem.
iTunes is a little sluggish but then so is RealOne, which has been my player of choice. iTunes seems to be comparable in features so for the time being I'm going to work with iTunes due to the music store and iPod integration.
I could never figure out why the rave reviews of Music Match by PC Magazine as I think it's awful. I've been using EphPod for sync.

I was .... repeat was using norton firewall. It prevented me from accessing the store. If you have a firewall try disabling it and see if you can access the store. I am trying to find a workaround until then ... Norton is off.

Yup - I had the same problem and disabled Norton Firewall for the duration of my visit to the Music Store which fixed the problem.

I have norton Firewall.. I am not in a hurry to get to the music store just yet but will there be a fix you think so that we can run norton and the Itms?

That did it. They should post this somewhere on the Apple site.

I just discovered the issue about conflicting with Norton Internet Security then came back here to post and saw several people had just discovered the same thing.
I tried adding apple.com to NIS' web access list but this had no effect. Searched Symantec site for iTunes and found no listing.
I'm going to see if an upgrade to NIS 2004 (I'm running 2003) is available for download.
Can someone report the problem to Apple and point them to this thread? I could not see where one reports problems from the support page. Do I need to "enroll" my iPod first? I've already registered it. Stupid Windows user here (not blonde)...

I bought some songs on my work PC this afternoon. Now I would like to have them available on my home PC. I've told iTunes to check for purchased music and I log in. It promptly tells me that it's downloaded all songs for this account but I don't see any of my songs in the "purchased music" list. I can play the file from my iPod but I would think there has to be a way to get iTunes to download the song from the iTunes store again for this PC.
Little help please

The most basic way is that you could first burn the AAC file to a CD, then re-rip it (this will involve an extremely small amount of loss of quality, negligable in my tests).

Well what I was really hoping for was that iTunes would some how download all your purchases on any of the 3 machines you want them on.
What happens if you lose your hard drive? I would hope they have some way of re-sending you all your purchased songs.

Don't think so. Read the "fine print" on the iTMS. It says they have no responsibilities or obligations once you have downloaded a song. No refunds, no excanges, etc. So, if you lost it, you're SOL.
If you buy a CD from the store and then your house burns down, they CD store won't give you another CD.

heh. the solution is fairly simple. copy the files off your hard drive and take them to the other computer. you can copy them over the network, burn them to a cd-r, etc. the DRM does not keep you from moving the files around, it just prevents you from playing them on non-authorized machines.

I've posted a thread earlier on the same problem on this forum (NIS conflicting with Itunes Music store). I sent a feedback to both Apple and Symantec. I will let you know as soon as I get an answer from either of them. BTW, I believe that upgrading to NIS 2004 won't help a bit for the time being.

What is defined as a "authorized machine"? By that I mean if I sign up at work, can I then sign up at home as the same person/account, or is that a completely different signup?

Any one having a problem in the the new iTunes for Windows logging into the Music Store? I got in one time last night and no more! I have a sign on ID and everything and it keeps saying to check my internet connection and try again...I have a high speed cable connection ALWAYS on!
What gives? Do they want us to buy music or not?

Yep, I'm using NIS 2004 and it's the same problem - by the way, thanks for this info, as I was trying all evening to buy some songs, but I thought it was just incredibly busy....should have tried this.

Once you download songs from the Music Store, they are yours. You cannot download them again to a second computer because you've already purchased and received the file. The only way to get it to the 2nd computer is to burn to CD or transfer the file some other method (zip disk, network, etc.)
To backup your purchases (always a good idea) in case your hard drive tanks, simply set your iTunes burning preferences to Data CD and burn your "Purchased Music" playlist. ITunes will also burn to DVDs if you have an exceptionally large music library, or this new vesrion of iTunes allows you to burn one playlist on several CDs.
You "authorize" a computer the first time you try to play a song from the music store on it. You just enter your Music Store ID and password and you're up and running. If you've already maxed out your three computers, it will ask you to deauthorize one (under the iTunes Advanced Menu) before you can authorize the new computer.
Good luck.

Seems kind of sad that I can't just re-download all my songs onto all 3 of my authorized machines. I bought the digital rights to this music, not a physical CD (so the house burning down and the store not replacing my CD's doesn't hold up here). I realize I can copy stuff on CD's but that's not very elegant or convenient. I use Hotmail because I want my email on any of the 3 machines I use everyday without having to sync stuff and copy things here and there. Of course it would be incredibly simple if I could use the iPod to transfer the songs I bought to the other machines but Apple chose not to let me copy anything from the iPod to the PC so that kills that idea. In my opinion I should be able to have my account linked to 3 PC's and I should be able to yank any music I've purchased down to those machines. I bought iTunes songs on my work machine, it has no burner so I have no easy way to yank large files off it and I'm sure several people have similar limitations on some of their machines.
When you log in to the music store on the other computer - as you and not as some new user that wants to buy music on his/her own - then you'll be asked if you want to authorize that computer. Then you can buy music, etc. on that machine.
Me, I'm looking forward to setting up draw accounts for my kids, so I won't have to go and ok their purchases.
So I've tried to download a few songs and it keeps telling me that the file is unavailable.
Does that mean that the songs I've chosen may not have been converted yet?
Anyone else having this problem?

True, you didn't buy a CD, but you didn't buy simply the "rights" to the song. You purchased a song-file, which has rights attached to it outlining what you are able to do with the file. It's no different than purchasing and downloading computer software. You purchase a program, and you are able to download it one time. Once its downloaded to your compuer, it's your responsibility to protect the file if you are worried about needing a back up copy in the future.
I don't know how the other online stores do it, but I imagine that they treat their music purchases in much the same way.
As far as getting your music off the iPod, there are several third-party apps for the Mac that allow you to get around that obstacle. Now that iTunes is out for windows, I'm sure that there will be similar programs coming out, or if EphPod still works with your iPod you can use that to transfer music.

For the time being, you can play songs directly off the ipod if that's any help.
I've got a large library at home, and it synchs with my ipod. At work, I connect the ipod to my pc and set up the 'manually synch' While I can't copy the songs from the ipod to the pc, I can play them directly off the ipod. That's good enough for now. In fact it might be better since I'm not filling up my work machine's hard drive with songs.

So I downloaded Itunes for Windows, and realized that the Music Store tunes are only in AAC 128kbps CPR format.
And, you can burn these songs up to 10 times to a CD, correct?
So my question is, if I want to get my iTunes Music store downloads into mp3 format for various compatibility reasons (aka, for use with my Prismiq), then I can:
1) Burn Audio CD of Itunes Music store downloads to CD (aka, the m4p AAC files become 44.1KHz-16-bit WAV files)
2) I then need to rip those songs from the CD to hard drive (EAC, MC 9.1, whatever) and encode to my CODEC of choice (LAME aps mp3 or flac or what-have-you)
SO am I right in assuming that once I burn an Audio CD of my Music store downloads, they become de-facto .wav files????

You are correct. Except there is no limit on the burning. You can burn purchased music over and over again. Apple even quotes this as a feature on itunes.com
From itunes.com:
"Burn unlimited audio CDs and encode music from CDs in pristine AAC or MP3 ? with no extra fees. "

Everytime I try to access the Music Store I get this error message: We could not complete your Music Store request. There is not enough memory available. Anyone seen this error?
gandalf44
10-17-2003, 04:26 PM
Hmmm....so its just the "extra" step of burning .wav files to CD, then having to re-rip to format of choice (for me FLAC). Sucks. Understandable from a DRM perspective I guess.
I was hoping to be able to trascode iTunes downloads to FLAC thru Foobar2000, but the Foobar2000 mp4 plugin of course can't read Apple's m4p files......bummer :(
Oh well... :o
Looks like I'll burn Audio CD to CD-RW, then rip into FLAC for archive. Probably makes sense to back up the DRM m4p files too.
Glad I bought my Maxtor 250G external drive :D

Easy workaround: when you get the memory error, dismiss the dialog, then click the BROWSE button in the upper-right area. It will display genre, artist, and album from the store. Not very glamorous but it will let you shop.

I agree that it would be more elegant if Apple let you download the file to another PC instead of forcing you into manually getting it there but there is a solution...
Enable your iPod for disk use then it appears as another drive letter in Windows. Use your iPod as a removable HDD. Create a folder and copy the files you purchased to it. Take your iPod to work and then transfer the files. Don't forget to delete them from the iPod when you're done so as to free up the space.
When you first try and access the iTunes file on your work PC you will be prompted to log into the iTunes store. After that your work PC is added as a second authorized PC.
The "Use iPod as disk" option is under the Ipod preferences that are available when your iPod is selected as the source in iTunes.

From the Apple site discussion forum: (This worked for me)
Quoting Mr. Reeves:
A respondent in another thread sugested "Turn of "proxy server use" in the LAN tab of Connections withing Internet Options of the COntrol Panel."
The advice given above FIXED my connection problem immediately.
I am using AdSubtract, Norton AV and a Linksys router.
In other words:
Open Control Panel
Click on Internet Options
Click on Connections
Click on LAN Settings
Uncheck the box under Proxy Server
Hit OK
Hit OK
Now try connecting to the ITunes store.
You're welcome!

Thank you Mr. Reeves!

NIS DOES prevent you from initially accessing Music Store. I checked your quoted solution (disabling proxy in the lan setting) and have confirmed that I had no proxy set up on my system so that's not the solution to the problems with NIS.
Here's what the Symantec Help Desk answered me so far (which unfortunately didn't help):
reetings Hong,
Thank you for contacting Symantec Online Technical Support. Please accept our apologies for the difficulty caused.
In your message you wrote:
>The error message if you don't disable NIS is something like "the music
>store could not process your request. Insufficient memory. Try later"
I suggest that you check the Event log files to see which rule of Norton Personal Firewall (NPF)/Norton Internet Security (NIS) is blocking the connection to the server. Based on the rule that is preventing the access, I suggest that you modify the rules accordingly. Before this doing this follow the steps below to recreate the scenario:
1. Clear log entries.
2. Recreate the situation.
3. View log files to identify the offending rule.
To clear the log file entries, follow the steps below:
1. Open NPF/NIS.
2. Click Statistics.
3. Click View Logs. In the Log click on Internet Security to highlight it
4. Click Log tab at the top and select 'Clear all Categories'. 5. Click 'Yes' to the Dialog box.
Recreate the situation.
To view event log files:
1. Open NPF/NIS.
2. Click Statistics.
3. Click View Logs. In the Log Viewer, select the log that you want to review. 4. Examine the log under all the parameters like Firewall, Connection and etc to see which rule is blocking the connection. 5. When you are done, click another log or click OK to close the Log Viewer.
Please refer the following document in order to know how to save the contents of the event log into a text file:

I suggest that you send us the text file as an email attachment.
I also suggest that you disable the Windows XP firewall. Please refer the following document for instructions:

The proxy server fix may address some problems, but it definitely isn't the whole story. My WinXP installation never had the proxy box checked.
Turning off NIS _completely_ (not just the firewall) does solve it, but that is a risky solution at best. I've looked at the NIS logs, and cannot find any firewall (or other) message indicating a problem with the ITMS service.
Happily, the workaround that another poster suggested (clicking OK on the "out of memory" dialog, then clicking the "browse" icon) does work. Not flashy, but definitely usable.

I love iTunes on my iMacs, and now I like it on Windows XP after some initial woes. Initial problems linking to Music Store were solved by exiting one of my firewalls, but the big differences was exiting my Earthlink accelerator -- I have that for times when my cable internet connect goes out and I must use dial-up modem. Once I did that, I got to the Music Store and the site works fine.

Once you've gained access to Music Store by disabling NIS, you can immediately reenable it and happely continue brwosing/shopping while feeling protected.
Also, there now is a dedicated NIS + Win Itunes document on the Symantec Knowledge Base where they acknowledge the problem and suggest using the above work around for the time being, saying that they'll update the document when they have made some progress.
Ok. Here's my problem in a little more detail. I have paid for 6 tunes now, but haven't been able to listen to them or actually download them. The message I get says:
There was an error downloading your purchased music. The required file cannot be found. Use the "Check For Purchased Music" command in the Advanced Menu to try again later.
I disabled my McAfee Firewall. I'm running it on Windows XP.
Anyone else getting this? Anyone have any thoughts? This is aggravating....

I don't use the proxy settings and never did. NIS doesn't create any log entries indicating traffic is trying to pass. This isn't the first time I've experienced a problem with NIS and there was no log entry to help track down a problem or configure a workaround. Either NIS isn't logging it or the problem is related more to interference by the running NIS components, since disabling it resolves the problem. Either way I expect an update from Symantec is going to be required.
Based on the variety of problems I've been reading about I am convinced that Apple released iTunes knowing it was buggy. Either that or they failed to ever test iTunes with personal firewalls, especially one as popular as NIS. Either way it shows Apple isn't the perfect company they would like the PC world to believe.
Apple had a chance to show the PC world that they are better than Microsoft. What I see is that they are no better or worse, just different. This confirms my long standing opinion about the Mac vs. PC debate.
One thing that is definately worse, however, is the smaller feature set and user configurability. There has always been little choice of hardware and software in the Apple world as compared with the PC world. Sure, there is some real junk in the PC world, but my iPod and iTunes have little documentation, barely any explanation of what's fixed, changed and improved in the new version (iPod), and the online help isn't all that helpful in my opinion. If this is typical of Apple, then now my expecations of life in the Apple world have been grounded in reality. Apple, it seems, has a vision of how to do things and what their customers need to know and should be allowed to do (more so than Microsoft).
iTunes for Windows isn't going to be a big sucess and result in favorable opinions about Apple from PC users if it is a 100% copy of the Mac version. We need more of what the PC community has come to expect, otherwise we'll stick with the other products on the market. I continue to use RealOne Player Plus for burning (because iTunes doesn't burn properly) and for ripping (because I can't trust iTunes since it can't burn properly), then add the folder in iTunes and let it sync my iPod. I haven't looked at MC9 yet but I am hopefully they will add transparent iPod synchronization to match iTunes.

I have been unable to download any music purchased from the music store. I get the following error dialog for all songs I attempt to download:
"... the required file cannot be found. Choose download purchased music from the Advanced menu"
which of course just gets the same error.
Also, when I try to select Radio from iTunes I get the error:
"an error occurred while connecting to the radio tuner. Check your internet connection or try again later"
I am not running any s/w firewall. I am using a Linksys router with firewall built in.
Any suggestions? I cannot get any of the music I have purchased.

I'm having the exact same issues with (- 50) errors, no song previews, no radio. No software firewall but behind a Linksys router. Have tried opening various ports in the router based on messages here and on Apple's support forum but to no avail. Running fully patched XP Pro, 768 meg ram on a 2 ghz Dell machine.

I just tried downloading my purchased music from my Verizon Express Network and get the same results. This rules out the Linksys router as it removes it from the equation.
The problem is definitely on the Apple music store side and I'm waiting to hear back from their customer support about this problem.

Seems to solve the problem for me. No mention of this problem in the documentation so we don't know what to check. Also I ran "help - Check for iTunes updates" and it did not report that a new version was available. I never would have known if not for having read it here... but good to know that Apple collected my email address so that they could send me more marketing junk.

Did you ever resolve this issue? The new itunes upgrade did NOT fix this for me and I'm still unable to preview nor download purchased music. Apple customer support is a complete joke as they sent me a canned email informing me someone would get back to me in 24 hours. In 24 hours I got another canned email directing me to the itunes web site which is where I started. Kind of a circle jerk. No one seems to have my problem, so I'll mention it here as well.
I can't access the music store, and it has nothing to do with Norton (I don't have NIS but do have NAV and have turned it off to test) nor a proxy server (not checked) nor a firewire (disabled all). But the symptoms sure seem like they are related to a firewire -- I get a "iTunes could not connect to the Music Store. The required file cannot be found."
I've upgraded to 4.1.1, I've tried everything else... at this point iTunes Music Store just seems Not Ready For Prime Time.

To update my unable to download purchased music. It was noted that users that had installed and downloaded the Venturi compression s/w that is supplied with Verizon's Express Network was likely interfering with itunes as it sets up a proxy.
The killer is that even if you uninstall this s/w it still alters your Windows XP networking configuration. Venturi acknowledges this and even supplies a small utility to really remove their s/w.
This utility DELETED the TCPIP transport from my Windows XP system and left it unusable for any networking. i had to completely wipe my hard drive clean and reinstall Windows.
Please be careful with this utility. On a happier note the reinstall has my iTunes working like a champ!
no particular problems with the music store...except for the fact that they have a crap load of "Partial albums".... who are they trying to fool....who the hell is going to want to buy each track seperately and on top futhermore not even be able to get the full album?

I put in my cd, click burn and it starts out normal but then it says "Canceling burn, this may take a minute or two" and then i get the following message:
"The attempt to burn the disk has failed. An unknown error has occurred (4210)."
Can anybody help? I have tried two brands of cd's and get the same results with both. The one i have now are Sony 80 minute CD-R Audio's.
thanks:)
For the "Cannot find required file" error message, here's what I did -- from my posting over on the apple board -- there's a fair amount of discussion over there on this -- go and search "required file" and a ton of stuff comes up:
Here's what I did to rid myself of the "Required File Cannot Be Found" error message.
First, I turned off my McAfee firewall temporarily.
Then, per Franko's suggestions, I searched my computer for "web accelerators" and found something called "Backweb" which I uninstalled using "spybot."
Then, I tried to uninstall the Zero Knowledge program called "Freedom." This was pretty difficult (it didn't show up on the "Add/Remove Programs" tab and didn't allow me to open it or delete it any other way), but I found that the Zero Knowledge customer support was pretty responsive. I also discovered that if you send more than one e-mail to support, you get more than one technician to respond, upping your chance of getting a usable response.
Now, I'm in and so far everything seems to be working.
That's it. It seems to me that the Zero Knowledge thing (which came bundled with my HP computer) was what was stopping me. I hope you clear it up.

I too was having the "could not find required file... check network connection/try again later" error in Windows XP. Rather accidently I found a way to work on my machine. I normally use Netscape as my browser, but when I went through the help menu in iTunes to "register iTunes" (even though this has been done, but I was trying everything) Internet Explorer was executed and gave me the "cannot load page offline would you like to connect?" message. I clicked connect and bam, iTunes music store started working.
Hope it works for some of you as it is frustrating when you REALLY want a song and can't get to it.

<SNIP> found something called "Backweb" which I uninstalled using "spybot."
Great advice. I have a HP.
I removed the Backweb and Zero Knowledge freedom. Now, I can download my files with no problems.
BTW, my zero knowledge was in the 'Add / Remove Programs' under 'Freedom Security and Privacy Suite'.

This isn't technically a problem with the store, but...does anyone know anything about Apple's intentions to open the iTunes Music Store in other countries apart from America????? Australia especially, as I live there. Reply to this thread I created

Problem: The GEARSecurity clashes w/other software in my computer. I have made sure the service called "GEARSecurity" is not set to "Automatic" startup any more, as iTunes otherwise doesn't load and my computer (windows XP) crashes.
However this results in the inability to read/rip CDs as well as the ability to burn a CD in iTunes for Windows. I get a popup window when you start iTunes for Windows that says something like "The iTunes service for importing and burning CDs and DVDs has not been started. Please restart the service to enable burning and importing."
WHAT TO DO? PLS HELP..

Hello fellow ipodloungers!
I'm kind of glad i stumbled over this thread. Apparently I'm having the same trouble connecting to Apple's MusicStore.
Ever since I installed NIS (norton internet security) software, I havent been able to coonect to the Apple Musicstore at all. I tried disabling the NIS but it didn't help.
The message i get:
"iTune could not connect to the Music Store.
Make sure your network connection is active and try again."
I tried some of the methods that people have posted but I still have no clue how to resolve the problem.
Please help me out if you can... thank you!
Here is another off subject question for the NIS users,
Does anyone know how to stop the..
"Loading Productivity control list, please wait..."
that thing pop ups everytime i surf the net, every single sites i go to, every programs i try to use the internet connection with.
Here are my specs:
WinXP sp1
2.2ghz
640mb Ram
Norton internet security
Norton antivirus
Notebook connecting to wireless router.
Thanks in advance

For a reason I don't know, iTunes takes about 3mins to load and it doesn't see my iPod when connected. I can't access the iPod in my computers drives without causing an explorer reload. (now it is named removable disk instead of iPod)

I have the same problem as most people on this thread have, I can not access the music store, whenever i do i get a message "I tunes could not connect, check your internet setting and try again." I have tried everything to resolve this, uninstalled my McAfee Virus Program, turned off my security, and turned on all of my cookies. I have not seen any other solutions to this problem, so I was wondering if any body has solved this on their PC.
Windows Xp

I have been no help in coming up with solutions to people having problems with the music store. To Jiggles. the free downloads are one time only. You have to download them during the week they are offered for free. After that they return to 99 cents, so you can't download previous free tunes.

Has anyone bought the accappella version of 'The Black Album' by Jay-Z by mistake? I paid ten dollars for it (I know I should have previewed it first) and all it is is the lyrics with no music, just for djs apparently, personally I think its ####ing sloppy that apple would not put some kind of warning about the content of the file, especially as I didn't know what accappella meant, like various other people I should imagine.

I try to move over the files with the mouse and while some songs go over just find when I try to move others from my Purchased Music playlist it refuses to. It comes up with the "NO" symbol. The circle with the line through it. Why in the world would it do this and what can I do to beat it into submission? These are AAC for crying out loud. This is what all this iPod iTunes crap was made for and it will not work. Can someone tell me what to do?

Does Fairplay 2 not work with iPod firmware 2.1? I just bought an EP on iTunes and can't copy it over ... all my old purchased music works, though.
I downgraded my firmware last night; I was sort of upset by the new version (perceived battery usage was lower, and the buttons seemed less responsive).

You need system 2.2 on your iPod to transfer the purchased music.

I bought the "Air" album "Moon Safari" and Track 04 "Kelly Watch The Stars" is badly glitched from about 1 min onwards.
They didn't respond for a while though I wasn't in a great hurry.
I chased them up after a week or so and to be fair they got straight back and refunded the whole album price.
I later discovered the next track also had some glitches but hey I got the album for free.
Yesterday though I read the following article which kind of puts me off on a permanent basis.

Regardless I'm an allofmp3.com man now (I don't have a conscience before you ask) their selection is great and at $1 per 100 meg my music collection is expanding by an album a day !!!

When I start up iTunes and go to the music store I get the same error message. The message is: "iTunes could not connect to the music store. An unknown error occured (-3592). Make sure your network connection is active and try again." I have contacted iTunes help and they suggested that I have a firewall or web accelator that is causing my problem. I do not have a web accelator and I have tried turning off my firewall (from McAfee). This has not helped the problem. I have been able to acces the music store 3 times in about the last month. 1st time was when my wife installed the software, 2nd time last night, I opened the program it didn't work, closed and reopened a couple of minutes later and it worked. It was the first time in several weeks. And the 3rd time was tonight by my wife again and she said that it took several tries to get iTunes to connect. When this error occures I now that my internet connection is on and active because I browse the web. I have SBC DSL. Any ideas on what may be wrong will be appericated.

^ i used to get that alot too... it just starts downloading the song again eventually. watch out though, it might charge you a few times (double usually)
that's what happened to me recently, i am so upset. i lost about 15 of my itunes songs. in my purchased folder, there were songs missing i noticed one day. what was more frustrating was that there was nooooo way of getting hold of itunes customer service. they make it really difficult to contact someone. so i emailed them, but i haven't heard anything at all. it's been months. i want the songs i rightfully payed for damnit!!!
i had kept my itunes receipts saved, when i emailed i gave them order numbers and such... yet, still no word.
what the heck!!!????
yeah, and i have been double charged a few times... i obviously have a major issue with getting in contact with them!!!!

If you are having trouble connecting to the Music Store, before turning off your firewall check to see if you have the web accelerator for your ISP turned on. I use MSN and I use the accelerator at level two (of five). The ONLY problem I have ever had with the web accelerator is the iTunes Music Store.
I can't talk about other web accelerators offered by other ISPs or by standalone programs, however.
But this works for me.

Most of the problems with Windows XP are due to the installation of 'Service Pack 2' even e-books won't open after!
I wrote an article which has been circulated widely on the internet via different article syndication services called "Microsoft Blues".
If you want to read it go here:http://www.ebook-sales.com/microsoft-blues.html
The final answer to the problem as I state in my article is to uninstall 'Service Pack 2' by going to 'Start' and then 'Control Panel' and then 'Add Remove Progs' highlight 'Service Pack 2' and them click on remove. You then need to reboot and don't download anything more from Microsoft! Bare bones Xp is alright for anything.

I'm running XP Pro with SP2 and have experienced absolutely no problems with SP2 and iTunes, or any other software for that matter. So if you think your problem is due to SP2, it is quite possible it is not.

Thanks I'm glad you posted that - I think some people think that everyone having this problem has never reached the site. I am in a similar boat to you. I have gotten to the Music Store (to set up the account in the 1st place) but cannot now get back in. That blows the 'you have SP2 (don't), you have a firewall in the way (no), you have a pop-up blocker,...' excuses. And I was once able to rip a CD and have the gracenote.com site automatically register the album info - that doesn't work now either. What's frustrating is that I can (and sounds like everyone else) can access the sites via their browser.
I used to think it was a (over)capacity problem - victims of their own success and their servers couldn't take it. But I was up at 430AM and it still wouldn't connect.
I have a feeling if this were a Microsoft problem it would be being reported on Wired.com and CNN.com by now.

I discovered a few days after I posted that my Toshiba laptop came with a firewall running - not the one I had added and turned off when I first had this problem and found out that the 'advice' was to turn it off. Turning the 2nd firewall off did allow me - with no other changes - to access both the Music Store and the CDDB database to get album data.
You guys should run msconfig (Start -> Run -> msconfig) and check Startup and Services to make sure you know what's running.
Still no word from anyone at Apple. I find the advice 'deactivate your firewall from a PC if you want to use our products' hard to fathom. I wonder if it will take a significant drop in iTunes sales to get any action on their part. I can type in my CD info - and while I'd like to buy some music from their site, I have plenty (my mini is just about full) to entertain me. If I were an Apple shareholder I'd be speaking up at the next public meeting.

Apple is requesting specific information now about the (-50) aborted downloads... You can check it out on their discussion forums in the Support tab of their site.
Seems like a lot of people's issues may be related to some Internet Service Providers, particularly Cox Cable (which I have).
