View Full Version : Temporary carrying case for Nano?

Hey, has anyone devised a temporary carrying case for the nano - beyond putting it in a sock?
I'm sure there will be a million accessories coming to market soon but in the meantime, it would be nice to have something to protect my nano with. Like a plastic sleeve that would keep it from getting scratched or harmed when I put it in my pocket.
Thanks,
Craig

I'm going to use a leather business card case -- any and all of them should work perfectly and be way cool besides!

Thanks,
Craig Ha. Funny because I used a baby sock with mine. But I also left the "Don't Steal Music" plastic wrapper on mine, so it's doubly protected.

I'm more worried about scratches and smudges ...so ya think wrapping it in syran wrap would work?

I just used an Altoids tin to make a temporary case. I lined it with part of a microfiber towel I use to dry my car.

im using a memory card soft case i got with my mju mini for free, it has a webbed pocket at the end which i cut a whole in for the screen, and put a slight cut in for the headphones, wraps the nano up when closed bt will do until suitable case is availble

I think he put a clear vinyl film over it. That's why you can't see it :)

yep...clear vinyl. works like a charm. and it's just about invisible.

The Coach brand (they make purses) "mini skinny" wallet is what I keep my nano in. It's super thin, can fit the earphones, and has a keychain end. The best part is that it zips up so the nano won't accidentally fall out, as with the sock.

being Coach, i imagine it was about $50, eh?
--edit--
nevermind, cheaper than i thought, and looks fairly decent.

Well, you can score it even cheaper on ebay. *wink*
It's pretty slick. The headphones stick out of the zipper and the nano is safe inside the fairly thick fabric (you can get leather too). You can stick the mini skinny inside your pocket and not scratch the nano. Or you can swing the mini skinny+nano on your finger as you dance to tunes.
<-- having way too much fun
Or you can be super practical and store a business card in the skinny's outer pocket and keep your keys on the keyring.
Copied from another thread about making temporary cardboard cases...
Ok so in summary:
qarki.com/ipod/NANOcase.pdf
That is the PDF to print on whatever media you have (cardstock, or something fairly thick is recommended). Please note in the print preferances that you are printing the Page Scaling is set to None. There are 2 variants one for simply using the plain white (or ontop of whatever media) and the flipped to print on the back side or your media and so you won't see the cut/crease lines.

That is a pic of my latest version.
If you want to be creative of course you can glue in some clear plastic or whatever.

i saw that TuneWear is putting out a wallet/nano case. wonderful idea, in my book. i love thin wallets, and it's a nano case. magnifique.
(now i don't have to look fruity carrying a Coach mini skinny)

vinyl can be found at wal-mart (fabric area)

haha, you wouldn't look fruity. Stylish, I say!
The TuneWear case looks much slicker than the Coach mini, though.

As a practical and sensible suggestion (!) I'm using the case I got free with my Motorola V3 phone as a case for the Nano until I can get a decent one. Fits pretty well and protects it. ;)

I'm just using an old microfibre pouch from a camera I had for it. It works fine and there dont seem to be any scratches, though i'm not being pedantic about them as when the nano tubes come out i'll just cover them up anyway.

I posted this on a few other threads, but there seems to be a bunch of threads devoted on protecting your new nano.
I did this......
went to walmart, bought a piece of clear vinyl from the fabric dept. bought enough to do at least 20 nano's for about a buck.
I cut it into a square roughly 2.5 times the width of the nano, folded the vinyl in half, then sealed the edges with a foodsaver.
this heatsealed the edges, basically welded the vinyl together ....I made a nice pouch exactly the size of the nano.
I slid two pieces of index cards in the pouch first so I could slide the nano into the pouch without it sticking, then I slid the nano in the pouch, took out the index cards, and the nano is now protected...the nano clings to the vinyl.....looks great.
I left the bottom open for the headphones and the plug, although I did fold the vinyl over the plug hole when I'm not using it.
This protects great, looks great, and cost almost nothing.
This will do until the fancy silicone cases start shipping.

as opposed to Frank, my vinyl protection wraps around the Nano. the foodsaver thing sounds like a good idea, though. what thickness vinyl did you get? i think my wal-mart might've screwed up the pricing, 'cause "heavy duty" was supposedly $3.84...but it was really, really thin. a lot thinner than what i had bought last time for only $1.84.
on a similar note, i went back to wal-mart today, looking for something like the iPod sock. ended up buying a beanie with a design i liked for $2, and a sewing machine. so with that, i'm gonna sew up a sock-like thing, and redo my vinyl case so that i will be able have a cutout for the wheel, the vinyl protection, and the little sock thingie. minimal bulge, a little more protection.
i also got some dark tinted vinyl that i'm gonna try to rig up for the steel backing on the Nano.

rather than sewing the beanie myself, my mom did it. god damn she can sew. the "sock" turned out perfect. exactly how i had envisioned it. think i'm going to downgrade to a thinner vinyl 'skin', combined with the sock. i'll put up some pictures tomorrow.

d-bear,
I bought two thicknesses of vinyl...ended up using the medium thickness, they had some much thicker, and a few thinner. Walmart had about 5 different thicknesses in stock. Spent more in gas driving there 3 miles away then the vinyl costs.
The seaming I did around the nano adds less then the thickness of the nano on one side, and the top of it. Through the vinyl I can still use the hold switch.......which I seem to have to do much more then I ever did on my 20 gig 4 gen ipod.
I like my nano, but I have noticed a few differances from "the big one"......the wheel is more sensitive, thus needing the hold button so as not to blow your ears off.
wrapping your nano as you did, especially with the thinner vinyl would also work great. The static cling would make it stay tight, and look even better then my seamed pouch. The "Walmart" solution seems much better then everyone rushing to ebay to buy these vinyl kit things....
