I am a total computer installation newbie, and I have no idea how to install a FireWire card. Could anyone give me some fairly detailed instructions on how to do this, including the tools needed, so I don't end up killing the computer and myself? Thanks!

Help!
I installed the firewire card into my computer, but nothing popped up saying a new driver has been detected or anything.
I'm so confused, I don't know if I put it in right. Can anyone help me?

Does the firewire card list in your device manager? What version of Windows are you running?

I'm using XP. And I don't think it showed up in the device manager thingy.
But thanks for helping anyway.
P.S. Did I do something wrong?

Generally speaking, XP doesn't require and device drivers for firewire... it's built in. Regardless, you should see it listed in the device manager if it is working or not. If the device has problems, it would have a yellow and or red exlamation point.

In the device manager, look for a IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers entry, and a 1394 Net Adapter. If they are not listed, try inserting the card in another slot, or perhaps it is seated properly in the slot it is in.

Also, when the computer boots up (depending on the manufacturer), you should see display saying what IRQ's are going to what devices... is the 1394 card listed there?

Just to be sure, go to:

start -> control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager

Look for 'IEEE 1394.... '. If you see this (and there's no yellow exclamation point to the left of it), then everything's fine, and it's installed properly.
