I didn't know where to post this, but I'm glad I haven't bought the shuffle yet, cause now the nano is tempting me. But, now I can't decide. The nano is...well...more expensive. But I adore it. Its cheaper than other iPods, but still rather high for me. I'm tempted to try and get it off ebay instead of from an apple store cause it may be cheaper for me. I'm going to have to see what becomes of my money situation next month.

So which one should I get? Give me some reasons you bought the nano over the shuffle. It might help me out with deciding, since I like them both. ^^ (that screen is taunting me!)

Get the nano. It just makes more sense.

Get the nano for sure. More space, a color screen.. and it just looks cooler :) The tubes are neat looking as well.

odd question. Do you NEED to use itunes to put MP3s on the iPod nano? Or shuffle? Is that a requirement? The apple website doesn't list it as a requirement.

Somebody mentioned drag and drop in these forums. Drag and drop from iTunes or drag and drop from your computer? How does it work? I'm curious, cause I'm new to this. :3

you can't drag and drop in your windows explorer but there are a few alternatives to itunes, you should try the software forums(Windows: Third Party).

All this posters thread needed to say was I'm so dumb I can't decide between the two.

okay, I'm convinced, nano it is. But its going to take a time to get all the funds I need. I'm gonna try and sell my thick PS2. I never use it, I only use my PSP now lately. ^^ And I could probably end up playing lots of fun flash games on the iPod nano right? :3

Okay, I'm going to look into it. Probably won't have it until October, but I'm used to jumping on the bandwagon (I bought the PSP in April, 2 months after launch, ONLY because I didn't have the money in March. XD I'm bad!)

For windows and mac users alike there is a drag and drop alternative to iTunes or the ipodsuport plugin for Winamp. It's called rebuild_db. It is a Python application so you need the Python Runtime installed on the computer to be able to use it. It does have an exe version but it's quite buggy and the python one is the only one getting updated. Basically it's just a rebuild routine for the database since iPods can't see music that is simply dragged onto them. So... the name is rebuild_db
Look for it on google and see if it's useful

I don't really think it's a dumb question.

First you have the cost. While not a big deal to some, it might be to others.

Second, you have durability. Before going to the gym, I just throw my Shuffle in my gym bag. Will I do that with my Nano? Not sure yet. Maybe with the case it will be fine. I also just put it in my locker when I shower and today I grabbed my towel and the Shuffle was on top so it hit the metal shelf, but all was fine. Will the Nano be fine? Also, you have the screen. Will that be easier to break? Also, it is obviously so much easier to scratch the Nano compared to the Shuffle so that's a negative. Also, I use my Shuffle while mowing the lawn, will I do that with the Nano, or will I be afraid to break it? I've already snagged the headphone cord on something and the Shuffle uncliped from my pocket, but since it's so light, it was still attached to the headphone cord so all was fine. I know the Nano is still light at 1.5 oz, but would that have happened, or would it have been pulled from the cord and fallen to the ground? Also, I clip my Shuffle to my gym shorts, will the extra weight of the Nano have any effect on that? When I bought a 4G 40 gig one, I had to tie my gym shorts to keep them from falling down because of the weight of the full sized iPod and I had to put it on the machines instead of keeping it clipped to my waist band because the extra weight and the movement made the iPod bounce up and down, which was annoying. Although that was 6.something oz compared to 1.5 oz, so I'm hoping I won't notice the extra mass.

These are all the questions that I thought about while working out with the Shuffle this morning as my wife is going to pick me up a Nano at the Apple store today. I'm hoping it works out as great as the Shuffle has, but to me the only advantage it has is the screen (besides looking very cool). And not for navigation purposes, but just to see who's singing some of the songs I don't know. So I'm not sure if the Nano will be as great as the Shuffle has been. Only time will tell.

i was in the same boat as you. i've decided on a Nano. these were my priorities:

simple
small
less than $200
less than or equal to 1gig

i was on the verge of getting an iAudio 5. then it occured to me that i did not need an FM radio, did not want voice recording, thought it was a little small...i was also a little concerned about the controls, given the size.

then i hopped over to the Shuffle side. got one for $19 NIB. perfect...cheap, super simple, really small. without opening it, i decided to sell it on eBay, and put the money towards the Nano.

for about $100 extra (2 gig, $179 with school discount), i will be able to quadruple the memory, keep the size minimal, have a screen with decent controls, have a myriad of accessories to choose from in the future, and have a black player. sorry, but i've been wanting a black iPod to be released ever since the first ones came out. this has actually kept me from purchasing one sooner.

be wary of eBay, though...they are actually going for above retail.

--edit--

oh, the U2 iPod....i hate the band, and hate the edition even more.

--edit #2--

i'm not concerned with scratches anywhere, except on the screen. they're superficial.

What will you be using it for? That's the main question. Ifit's your only iPod, get the Nano. If you want it to supplament your bigger iPod, consider the shuffle. I have one I use at the Gym. Don't think I'd get a Nano and sweat it up; it looks too sweet.

I'll still keep and enjoy my 1gb shuffle. This thing can be carried around anywhere and thrashed. Beach, gym, around the pool? no problem. Nano, 3g, 4g photo? those are my pride and joy, in the cool factor.

I'll keep them both and use them as i need them. My shuffle goes everywhere i go, with no worries. The Nano will see alot more party, family functions no doubt, gotta show it off!

I use this for my shuffle (because I hate the required auto-sync to my HD Library). It works great! I transformed the shuffle to FULL hard-drive space, drag-dropped through windows explorer all the misuc files I wanted on the shuffle, then I used the executable and it worked like a charm! The .exe was not buggy for me.

The only downside is that you can only see your shuffle songs through windows explorer and not through iTunes. But, the shuffle still charges nicely and now does not remove the songs if not in my iTunes Library.

For workout music I barely need to change or remove songs. Just add a few.
