To be sold for a small sum more, which would be donated to the Red Cross to help victims of hurricane Katrina.

Post here if you're in support of this proposal!

I will do as you wish.

Wrong forum.

It won't happen though, sorry.

Really? I consider it typing with caps lock on. ;)

Cross could be engraved on the back.

If they can do it to promote bands/artists, they can surely do it in the face of one of the worst natural disasters in America.

Thank you for moving this to the appropriate forum.

I think a donation to the Red Cross will help out more.

Nice colour though.

*Dies of laughter

But you know it does make sense but it would probably take a bit too long to manufacture..

I think it's a nice idea... if only 30 Dollars of each sold iPod would go to the victims it would help...
Donations are good but if you get something for it it's even better... other people make shirts... iPods could raise more... and apple would still earn something... and if not... that's PR!

I would buy one if one came out...
I really don't get the chance to donate a lot because I am just a kid, but I would do this (I like the color red too)

That's what I meant... some people who would buy this iPod would never donate even 30 dollars... not because of being cold-hearted but simply because of lack of money... if you donate and get something for it... perfect!

Its a bit lame since if youre gonna spend 300 dollars on an iPod and arent gonna donate 30 bucks to a good cause, then you really have to question your priorities..

Seems like a good idea. It's very embrassing that the USA couldn't help all the people in NA.
It also looks good. I think the click wheel should be white with red text though.

Yup, I've been to Africa. New Orleans hasn't started into genocide yet.

That's not to make light of the situation on the gulf coast, I have family in Biloxi. However, there are many people on this earth that live their whole lives in worse conditions.

Sorry Nice idea but its a slippery slope when a major co. Like Apple decides to do this and it won't. Why because

How about a Anti Cancer Yellow iPod or a Black 9/11 iPod

or Purple MultipleSclerosis iPod you can see where I am going all worthy causes.

If they didn't do it for the TSUNAMI in Banda Achee they wont do it now.

Dumb idea.

Everytime I pick up my nano, I'd remembered poor people couldn't even afford the bus fare to get out of town and here I am spending hundreds$ on a non-essential toy.

And it's colored BLOOD red noneless.

Disgusting.

i agree, it seems a useless idea. if you want an ipod, buy an ipod. if you want to donate, donate.

You are aware that Steve Jobs' salary is $1, right? It all goes into the company.

Some don't understand the concept, so I'll explain. The idea is this...

Tons of people are buying iPods. Only so many will donate to help victims of Katrina. However if donating $$$ gets them a special edition iPod, those who are already buying an iPod will have more incentive to donate a small sum to Katrina victims.

What is this "blood" red nonsense...it's red because it's called the "RED" Cross. I'd be proud to own a product that shows I support those in need.

I'm offended that someone would think this is disgusting.

He has stock options and the like, but he has enough money where he doesn't need to suck in more from the company, so he limits his salary to $1. Unlike at other companies... where the executives have enough... and keep sucking in more and more.

to be honest i think everyone understands the concept, its not difficult its just a bad idea.

why not bring out a red cross BMW? by your rationale that would provide an even greater margin of donation. but it just wouldnt work and as has been mentioned earlier by another poster its a slippery slope and people would expect special editions for every national disaster, terrorist attack, etc.

also, for me, theres something not quite right about advertising the fact you donate to charity

By that logic Armstrong bands are also bad. And an iPod is a far cry from a BMW. I never suggested that...to use that to support your argument only shows you have to invent my position to argue with it.

The point is also not to advertise that you donate to a charity, but simply to make it easier for people to take the plunge. I would see such a device as an ad for the charity, not the character of the person. So if anything, IMO the advertisement quality of this device would be for a self-less cause.

I am sadly surprized at the lack of support on THIS forum...so many wanting to strike out at the concept of something like the U2 iPod that benefits a charity. I've found many others who think this is a great idea. There's even precedent for it. So as I said, I'm a unpleasantly surprized at the attitudes and bad vibe I'm getting in return for an idea which was completely in good will. And certainly bewildered to find that people find this THREATENING!

I don't see this happening. First of all a major color redesign would require a lot of manufacturing and design to be reworked. Doing something like this would take a month at least. And unfortnetley I think this apathy for Katrina victims will have faded by then.

Maybe Apple could offer a Red Cross engraving on the backside for an additional $20/30/40/50 to be donnated to the Red Cross. This I'm sure could be worked out in a few days perhaps less.

As cool as a Red nano would be it isn't realisticly possible to make very quickly.

IIRC he does cool stuff like getting Apple to purchase a helicopter for him, then charging Apple for leasing it to him ...

There are ways to have such a low salary yet have a yearly income of millions ...

a/ ive not invented your position to argue with it... i said 'by your rationale'. by exagerating the idea im magnifying the inherent problem with your proposal, hopefully making it easier for you to comprehend.

b/ if you check, i did mention that 'for me' advertising that you support a donation is a bit crass. thats only my opinion of course. you could argue that donating and advertising is better than not donating at all, but again, it doesnt sit right with me. makes me feel that the person donating is not doing it altruistically, but for the ego boost.

c/ dont take the moral high ground. you are making it sound like because i, and many others here, dont support your idea, we are bad people. i dont think anyone finds it 'THREATENING', just an unworkable idea.
