I was extremely suprised that apple decided to not release a new ipod... this means that theyre going to stick with the current color ipods and the nano's for awhile now... at least until the video's are released probably sometime next year. I want my video ipod!!!...I must say i like the nano, but i am really disappointed... the fact that the ipod mini's have been discontinued... and replaced by the nano's... the whole point or the main point of the mini was for exercise and being on the go... well isnt that what the "different" external shell was for on the mini's?... now we have the nano which is basically the love child of the shuffle's rectangular shape and the ipod's everything else... especially the fact that think secret and apple insider have been reporting for some time now that the click wheel wasnt likely going to be featured and they were going to make the ipods more silverish not so easily scratchable material... to match the mac's... well what happened?... i must say the mini looks great but i think the only thing appealing to me is the fact that it is black with a black wheel.... thats awsome. but why are they soo long? and the headphone jack in the bottom of the ipod next to the charging slot?... why?..... theyre cute but i guess im just sad to see the mini's go... they were a great seller to apple and lets just hope the nano can replace them adequately... the size is awsome but it will just take some getting used to i guess. Anyone else share my grief?

i don't share your grief.

1. apple did release a new iPod. it is called the iPod nano.

2. the iPod nano is better for exercise and being on the go than the mini was due to having flash memory and being smaller. the material of the case is more scratch prone i admit, but you couldn't exactly beat up the mini's either.

3. iPod's iconic feature is the glassy white exterior. for the first time an iPod which LOOKS like an iPod has been shrunk to incredible small sizes without losing features. that is powerful.

4. the headphone jack is at the bottom because the unit is so thin it couldn't fit at the top where the color screen takes the whole thickness.

5. the iPod nano will easily replace the mini as the top seller and more so. the $199 entry price is doable, the look is far ahead of the mini, the small size is mind blowing, and no features are left out (unlike the mini which lacked stuff.)

1.what features did the mini lack from when it first came out?...it was equal exactally to the 4th gens with the black and white screens... also... they discontinued the mini's why?

2.also... the 199 is for a measley 2 gig!!! if you want to at least store something with the luxury of pictures and album art how are you going to do that with just 2 gigs?

3.NO ITRIP!!!

Why did everyone want video so f--king much? I wish they'd improve the stock headphones, and work on the audio.

Umm, the iPod nano is a new iPod. Looks like updates from 4G to 5G are still a ways off.

Don't hold your breath on video iPods. As much as people seem to want them, where do people get video content to put on there? iTunes Music Videos, yes, but there is currently no legal, simple way to download movies for personal use. And bit torrent and other P2P measures are illegal, and you can't "rip" DVDs to your hard drive the same way you do CDs.

Until the content stream is there for consumers, Apple will not be releasing a video iPod. Though the existence of music videos on the music store seems to indicate they have something up their sleeve. Just not yet.

i think that the nano is awesome but too expensive. apple could've easily made this the 2nd gen shuffle and kept it at a $150 price range, but no they decided to give it a new name(stolen from Creative Zen Nano) and give it a higher price.

1. you ARE right, the mini at the time of launch had the same feature set as the iPod, but quickly slipped as could also happen to the nano if video etc. launches. HOWEVER i totally disagree the ipod mini could exist with the iPod nano, they would canabilize each other. the mini was made for the people who wanted a smaller iPod and didn't have large storage needs. i would suspect MANY, MANY of the mini's users never came close to filling 2, 3, 4, or 6 GB. these same users would see the *much* more attractive nano and would purchase it in a heartbeat over an improved color screen mini, even if the mini had a bit more capacity at 8 or 10 GB (in an assumed improvement.) people who need big capacity are simply going to have to go with the iPod and with the 20GB version getting smaller and cheaper seemingly every month/revision it won't be a bad choice will it?

2. your right... $199 for 2GB is less than you got for the mini. BUT since again most folks didn't use all the space anyway AND YOU GAIN shock proof flash, a hugely smaller footprint, and a more attractive design... that is WORTH money. heck many of us pay more for an iPod than a Rio, iRiver etc. because of the looks... so this is no different but without the iPod line itself.

Not with the 2GB and 4GB, and color screens, and clickwheel...

apple tries to reunified overall ipod design. like message 1000 songs in your pocket, here we go again that was the first ipod AD in 2001. so mostly first big hard drive used mp3 player 4 years ago. now, Apple tries to set a rule for the first big flash memory based mp3 player. so they released ipod nano (2, 4GB). so we can say that it is another revolutionary. some of you blame why they didn't make huge capacity ipod or ipod video. but it is just your thinking. Apple has a vision to make an innovation that think better than anyone of you. rememer, there are a lot of smart people working for Apple. just think about this! you have no idea how much hard, difficult to make such a thin, small ipod ever. it needs really advanced technology. you just take granted for it.

A couple of points:

1) Headphone socket - if you put the pod in your pocket, to put it in upside down means the screen is right way up when you take it out. If you are holding it, having the connector at the bottom means excess headphone cable hangs below as opposed to getting in the way were it at the top.... there are arguements either way but i think the bottom makes more sense.

2) The name - They have not 'stolen' it from anyone!! Nano is a term little different from 'one', 'two' etc. Nobody can expect exclusive rights to a word like 'nano'.

This could of course represent a problem.... apple would get hammered when innapropriate material started getting into the hands of minors

what about rap songs with explicit lyrics. aren't those considered innapropriate material? but lil kids still get em.

That maybe the case, but images and videos are something else altogether.

Yeah but it would take one serious sad case to download a load of porn pictures! A video is something which could much more easily be imagined as happening.

Im not saying it will be a problem, just responding the earlier comment
