grrrrr. i got a mini just a while ago ( a little after christmas ) and it was 2nd gen. grrr. i didnt think theyd get rid of the mini line so quick! imho they shouldve used this to replace the shuffle, and just add a color screen to the mini, instead of getting rid of the whole line.
i can live with them getting rid of the line (kinda), but if 3rd party people stop making stuff for the mini THEN I WILL BE MAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am in a situation a lot like you are. Except I bought my Mini in the Middle of July(Of this year). Just long enough ago to prevent me from returning my Mini . I don't even want to do that because i bet the Nano feels flimsy, even fragile. I also think that this should have replaced the shuffle.

I don't think 3rd parties will stop, but they will certainly slow down to start on the nanos.
And I can't see them replacing shuffles with this. Shuffles are too small and small priced to be replaced with something more expensive.
I thinkt they're trying to make room for a new iPod between the nano and the iPod original.
I have a mini as well, so don't think I'm out of the loop here. They had the mini for a few years, btu I'm open to the change and I like it.
EDIT:

The nano would feel smal in your hand, granted. But it has a stainless steel backing, thereofre it wouldn't feel flimsy.
And as to the replacing of the shuffles... that would have been a terrible marketing decision for Apple. Apple made the shuffles to grab the lower spectrum of the mp3 player market. It looks as if they're making room for a new iPod between the nano and the iPod color.
Hope that helps.

It's to get people to buy more 20GB versions. Make it more of a difference. Anyway, I think they should have replaced the Shuffle too, but this is cool. :)

Dirty Angel, I don't know where you ordered your mini from but you shouldn't have too much trouble returning it. If it's Apple, you're protected for iirc 10 biz days if they replace/discontinue a product.
If you like the mini and want to keep it, you might just be able to get your cost reduced to whatever they sell the discontinued minis for in the red tag section...

wow, get it together...
it's not like your mini is going to blow up or stop working now that the nano's out... you've had the mini (and presumably got some good use out of it) for nearly a year. technology moves forward - accept it and stop crying like a baby when you're product gets "outdated". who cares if "3rd party people" slow down or shut down production of new mini accessories? The market is already saturated with thousands of them - it's not as if you're going to go out and buy every single one.
for chrissakes people, be happy with what you have
it's like a buying a 2 ghz computer only to have a 2.4 ghz one come out a half-year later and screaming injustice at the computer maker
just my two cents :)

I'm in a similar situation as ipodlova and Rbiz, but worse... I bought my iPod mini, LAST WEEK... I can't decide whether or not to sell my iPod mini 4GB and get a iPod nano 4GB, or to just keep my iPod mini since it's discontined and save up for a 60GB iPod color... advice?

I feel that they should have broken up into four markets instead of replacing the mini.
The shuffle could do the low end 512-1gb.
The nano, 2gb-4gb high-end flash.
The mini could still serve well, with these small 8-10gb 1" HDDs coming out...
And of course we have the full-size iPod.

Sorry for the double post, didn't realize I did it, but I agree with trenzterra, about having four seperate iPod lines, or just called this the new iPod mini... I'm kindof disapointed that Apple took the mini off of their website... I mean, I got my iPod mini a week ago for 200 bucks, and it's 4GB and it has been serving me well, I'm kindof sad that I didn't wait a week or two more to get the iPod nano, but none of us knew about it then, so I can't really blame myself... As far as getting the nano, I'm not sure... I'd rather either sell my mini and get the nano, but I'd rather have a 20+GB iPod, so I think I'll just get the iPod 60GB color...
I never thought about the stainless steel backing. But I still think I would like to be able to feel like there is something in my hand when I hold my ipod

EDIT: Further explanation of what I said before, The Nano only weighs something like .3 of an ounce.

I think they should have gotten rid of the Shuffle for the Nano and updated the Mini. Makes more sense, but, oh well. I'm still not buying the Nano regardless because it simply doesn't have enough space.
But I'm sure we'll see a new FULL SIZED iPod (video?) before the Xmas shopping season for sure. It's the next logical step. It's now the full sized iPod's turn for full update.

I lucked out, I just bought my sister an iPod mini a few weeks ago. Tomorrow would be the 14th day since it was delivered - today it was shipped back to Apple. Going with the nano instead. :)

They had their turn with the Ipod photo and the ipod 60GB.
well i dont think it should of replaced the shuffle as this is a low end ipod which is a lot newer then the mini. and would annoy a lot more people. most people i know would never buy an Ipod, iPod mini or ipod nano, but only a shuffle as they feel the rest are too expensive.
i personally find the minis, and ipods too big, for every day use.
but the nano looks perfect for dayily use even if it is a little low on memory.
lets not feget did we all day, WHAT, are they thinking with the ipod mini, its a downgread, who wants less space?

They shouldn't have replaced the mini OR the shuffle. In fact they shouldn't have replaced anything. They should have just brought out the Nano.

If everyone thinks they're going to release minis in 8-10 gb between the nanos and the full size ipods, I have a question. What will the prices be? 4gb nano: 250$. 20gb full: 300$. I don't think apple would release a 8/10 gb at like 270 or 260, It's too close to each ipod. And another thing, apple certainly would NOT release a non color 8/10 gb ipod that falls between two color ipods and sell that. Unless they were to make something like this: 2-4 gb color screen: 200-250$ or 8-10 gb non color screen: 200-250$ That would still work, but I don't think apple would downgrade since all ipods with screens have color.

the 2nd generation minis are still good. i mean, they have stellar battery life and a good amount of space, but i think the hard drive mp3 player is on its way out. there has been so much progression in flash memory in the last few years, and there is a new organic memory thats in development, so i think that the hard drive in general is getting dated. it kinda feels clumsy having moving parts any more, which is why i think the nano is so cool: good amount of space, truly tiny and no moving parts. but then again, the definition of tiny is changing with each new player, like the first ipod, which by todays standards is huge, was pretty damn tiny back in 2000 or whenever they first came out.

Oh come on. Get over yourselves. The nano has so much more potential than the mini. This thing is going to have amazing sales. So much cooler than the mini... and in much better colors.
I agree that this is a better product than the Mini, but it's also leaps and bounds better than the Shuffle. I really see absolutely no reason at all to keep the Shuffle around with the Nano being introduced. Apple should just focus the 100-200 song market on cell phones and kill off the Shuffle, unless you're just really cheap there's no reason to own one over a Nano.

they're tryin to hitch every niche of people in every price range...as in the shuffle is for people who really dont cant afford a $400 mp3 player but are in the market for one and $99 for a 512 definitly beats a $60 samsung yepp at only 64 mbs...although they're rid of the minis which i have one too i think its a good change cuz its similar in storage space but with the chance of less harddrive screw ups...im gonna get a nano soon prolly in white just cuz the fact the black ones are more prone to looking nasty than the white plastic just my $0.02

why should we just look at size for pricing, theres so much more to take into account.
EDIt
also i know a large number of people who would just about buy an shuffle, but never an ipod as they see them as over priced.
where i see them as value for money

Shuffle fits my needs better than nano. I prefer no screen and I never need more than 13 hours of music on a daily basis. I have a big pod for trips. Shuffle is my go to player. No time to look at screen or to play with buttons. I turn it on in the morning and turn it off when I get home at night. Makes my job more fun, interactive player would make my job more work.
Nano is one sweet pod, but shuffle works the way I do.

The one big thing the Mini has over the Nano..
Firewire.
There are a lot of Macs out there that dont have USB 2.0
but nearly every one of them has Firewire.
Even a lot of PC's dont have USB2, they have to use an addin card
that usually has both USB2 and Firewire.
Loading a 4GB drive with USB1 is going to take forever.

that i think is the only drawback with the nanos no firewire...although i only use firewire to charge my ipod which works to charge the nano but its helps when im on the go or go to a friends house...i use the firewire in my car with my 300 watt power inverter to a surge protector to my a/c adapter with the firewire...heh cheap mans car connector...i can help with more info if u pm me
