I'm just confused about why Apple chose the "Nano" name. Creative has had a Zen Nano (and a Nano plus) for a while now.

Creative bags the interface patent, so Apple retaliates by copying their product name. Cool...

Look for the iPod Zen soon... :)
It's nano - and as far as I am aware Creative did not invent the word "nano" unless of course they wish to take the ancient Greeks to court...

And then Apple will patent the name Nano so that they get back the money they have to pay for the patent of their own interface-system... hm... interesting...

I'm still wondering why Apple chose to name it's player with a name that was similar to that of another flash mp3 player.
Perhaps they are cocking a snook at Creative?....

I'm sure other products used mini before the ipod too.

But you could be right, it very well could be a jab at Creative, who obviously didn't register "Nano" as a trademark...same way as Creative took advantage of Apple not registering its patent first. Hey, Creative said they wanted a war, right?
Of course, if Creative did register the trademark, now they have both patent and trademark infringement on Apple. This could get interesting!
Funny, remember all huffy Apple got when some company called their flash player a "Super Shuffle", and how that company had to change the name?

yes that's what I ment - registering as trademark or put a (c) on it!
Hm... let's see what creative and apple do!
They said they wanted a war?
The eternal Apple vs. Microsoft - war fought in public?

I think they should've just called it the iPod mini, making it the 3rd gen iPod mini.

Umm, Creative came out with a mp3 player that used the interface before Apple ever released an iPod.
Below is a quote from a news article about the patent:
"Creative first started using the interface in its Nomad Jukebox MP3 player, which began shipping in September 2000, according to the press release. Apple did not announce its iPod until more than a year later."

So Apple is following Creative's footsteps? But Apple is getting all their money? Hey it's EAT or BE EATEN.

I strongly suggest you don't try to eat the nano. Apple even had to discourage people from doing that with the Shuffle, so I assume you also can't do that with the physically bigger Nano (even though it's name may suggest a miniscule size)

Lame name if you ask me. But, hey, it's what's under the hood that counts, right? :)

true. i have the Zen Nano, and i thought the name sucked. if they were gonna steal a name from Creative, they should've just stole Micro or Neeon.
I think apple, put that name because its a moderm technology name, that common users dont know of (nanotechnology), therefore apple reasures his reputation of leading market on mp3, and avengarde once again.
Nano is more interesting than mini, people know what mini is it , but dont know what nano means.
