View Full Version : Nano's headphone jack? Same problems as the iPod Color?

So how are people feeling about the Nano? I'm sort of curious if it has the same photo-sending parts in the headphone jack that the larger iPod colors do... any word on that? It's an interesting blend of different iPod bits...

The Shuffle has, apparently the best sound quality, and is based on flash memory.

It has a screen similar to the iPod color, which makes me wonder if it suffers from the same headphone jack issue that the iPod Colors do... static on Piano and classical music.

Someone NEEDS to buy one of these and find out for sure! Check over on the "Sound Distortion" thread on the iPod Color Page for links to music that suffers from the sound issue!

EDIT: Whoa! First post on the Nano Boards!
EDIT 2: Take no heed of the other Nano posts dated before mine. They were moved here! Cheaters!

The sound distortion is due to adding A/V capability to the color iPod headphone jack.

On the Apple site, there is no mention of iPod nano being able to connect to a TV. So maybe we're 'lucky'...

Also, the iPod photo connector is not mentioned in the nano description. I wouldn't be surprised if these 2 features were left out of the nano.

Apple has a comparison of all iPod models on their website at the moment. The nano is missing some things that may have caused the sound distortion in the Photo iPod... check out the "Ports" of the Color (Photo) iPods:

Dock connector, remote connector, stereo headphone jack, composite video and audio through headphone jack

And now check out the nano's ports list:

Dock connector, stereo headphone jack

If it was indeed the photo out elements of the iPod Color's headphone jack that cause the distortion, the nano may be free from this defect!

Hahaha. You were the first in these forums. But all of us posted within two minutes on iLounge because there were no forums yet.

Ya, there should be no problems of it being color becuse I don't see and a TV functionality.

So it should sound as good as the Shuffle. The funny thing is that very few reviews pick up on this.

How about the iPod famous bass rolled off?

The iPod mini second generation actually had better bass than other iPods... I wonder if the nano has that feature as well? And why did Apple leave out the video connectivity? It seems to me like they're admitting there was a problem with it...

Mercuttio beat me to this issue :P

If Apple took out the composite A/V, then they certainly have learned something, havent they? Or maybe the iPod nano was just too thin...

Anyways, I wonder if Apple would offer to remove the A/V functions from my iPod Photo and replace it with a normal headphone jack...

If anyone's buying a nano, please report back about sound quality!

I think the Shuffle had the best sound of all, with no bass rolloff because it didn't need capacitors (probably due to no hard drive.) The nano should be the same...

The hard drive has nothing to do with DC coupling caps. I'd guess the caps aren't in the Shuffle because they couldn't fit ones large enough to have enough capacitance not to cause godawful rolloff with most headphones.

I AM curious about the sound, though. It's quite possible that they've tried to save every last cubic millimeter of space in this one too... if so, wouldn't it be funny if the low-end and midrange iPods both had higher sound quality than the top of the line one?

Heh, they did last gen too... wouldn't be a surprise this time either.

That was something I read. If not to power the HD, why would they be there? What advantage or benefit is there over the Shuffle's electronics?

The Shuffle is cheap, light, and sounds better than the other iPods...

(I noticed the difference before reading the article, that only confirmed what I heard with my own ears.)

does the nano use push/pull transistors?
