Hello,

now it´s official. A new iPod is coming.

"10:44 -- Job announced a new iPod called the iPod Nano: "1,000 songs in your pocket and impossibly small," Jobs said. It's "thinner than a No. 2 pencil," he said to oohs and aahs from the audience. "The iPod Nano is 80 percent smaller than the original iPod.""

I must say, I´m a bit disappointed, but I´m very excited seeing this thing.

But who needs such a small thing?

What´s up with the shuffles?! Will they still be available, after the Nano is on the market?

It is absolutely fantastic except one thing..... the battery..... 14 hours is a bit rotten. Id have preferred it a bit bigger and better life. I darent imagine what this will translate to in real battery performance.....10 hours?

Announced today, the iPod Nano (http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/)

At first I thought it was a replacement for the shuffle, but it appears not to be. Interesting, but I won't be getting one.....

The shuffles will still be around. This nano is replacing the minis it seems.

Bad name.

Says "midget." Reminds of me of that short guy in Fantasy Island, of Robin Williams' "Come in Nanoo!"

I thought I postd in the iLounge. Sorry!

If you look at the apple web site, it appears that this is a replacement for the mini.

I don't have a need for one, as its really just a new mini but for those who where thinking mini, its a great option. And for those debating between mini and shuffle.

Sleek thingy... Just ordered the black one. Just perfect for me. I have the 3g 30 gb. And it's a bit big for training and everyday use. Nano is smaller than the mini and has a color screen (shuffle) PErfect. Can't wait.

I think it's a great idea!! The only things I don't like is the fact that the most you can get is 4gb on it, and that's for $250 and that the battery life isn't very breath-taking. However i'll be getting one, they look really sexy, especially the black one!!

Tammy05
09-07-2005, 04:14 PM
I wish it came in larger sizes. If it was replacing the mini it should have made new sizes in 6gb and 8gb. I would have really liked that. 4gb may not be enough :/

i can barely see it, but is the bak same as regular ipods too? the metal plate, wat you call it

dcx693
09-07-2005, 04:15 PM
Yeah, the battery life isn't great, especially for a flash (not HD) player, but that's the price you pay for having a very sleek device like this one.

09-07-2005, 04:17 PM
I wish they'd updated the normal iPod line too, even if it was just a new colour (black!?!?).

I don't have much use for a nano, and I can't see the majority of current iPod owners atm will.

Even though, I bet it'll get new users by the bucketload.

09-07-2005, 04:18 PM
interesting that they replace a 6gig mini with a 4gig nano.

i'm pretty sure that they will have larger capacity nanos in 2006.
especially with the new discoveries in flash memory...

i would love a black one, but i have a 20g color and a 1g shuffle, and a new black razr, and a headset to go with it.

my batman gadget factor would go through the roof if i put a nano on my belt.

i wonder if they engrave the back of these too?

nick.

It looks cool but I think it's a pitty that they replaced the minis... they where more robust and the backs where not that scratchable!
But with the nano you could fall down while skating because there is no danger of HD-crashes!
But with the nano being that small and looking so breakable,
I wouldn't take it with me while working out!
Okay for working out there is still the shuffle...
And there are these sweet tubes to protect it.... hmmm

But hey:
Didn't you say, when we have flash-drives, we'll have 40 hours of playback...
How long did the minis last?

Now the nano has flash-drives... and what's the big advantage besides no risk of HD-crash?
Will it have your wonderfull "gapless playback" now?

I'm not too fond of the headphone jack being on the bottom of the nano. Seems a bit unorthodox seeing as you would probably be holding it upside down. I guess you could adapt to the headphone jack, but it's a bit strange.

It's not nearly as revolutionary as it was hyped to be -- but it'll do from a marketing standpoint. Come Christmas, these things will be flying off the shelves.

Personally, though, I don't think it's anything special. The minis looked better and their aluminum casings made it a distinctive line, giving owners a sort of signature flavor... or something like that.

Seems like iPod nano owners will just feel like they're holding a hollowed out version of the regular iPods.

But who knows, I was a fervent naysayer when the shuffle was released, yet I ended up buying one soon afterwards -- so I'll probably be owning a nano by next year.

looks quite attractive, and finally, a black iPod that has no affiliation with a band i consider second-rate. will hold off on thinking about one until i hear about how rigid it is. i'd hate to sit down, only to hear a snap sound coming from my left pocket.

09-07-2005, 04:25 PM
I think it looks like a shuffle with a color screen. Of course it is wider, but the pics make it look like a shuffle that's been working out a little bit. I guess I was thinking it would be a video ipod, but this one is nice.

The Nano looks amazing! Clearly, the replacement for the Mini, it looks to be a flash player because on the Apple site they repeatedly say that it's skip proof, great for jogging, etc...

I also dig the ultra-tiny size, color screen and the fact that it comes in white or black! This puppy will seamlessly fit in your pocket without sacraficing a screen, touch wheel, etc...

I've got a Photo so I'm set but I see one of these in my wife's near future for sure.

Well done Apple!

before today i was waiting my ### off and soo excited and my excitement has been fullfilled. i love the ipod nano. before i had dreams of a tiny ipod in which i could run with that was white and in the same of the bose remote control for the soundock now somehow it came true.. don;t ask. anyways i dn;t care what people say i just love it. i'm getting one right away. one thing that was dissapointing was that the headphone jack i beelieve is actually on the bottom other than on the top.. i saw a picture with the dock connector and the headphone port is right next to it? oh well.

I love this mp3 player but i dont see the Shuffle taking off.
14 hours of battery life is pretty good for a player with a color screen.

What!? It's super thin for a lower profile. Now, instead of mini looking like a bluge in my pocket, I'll see a small crease. It has unskippable sound, color screen...

Mediochre battery is 14 hours? Wow...

Tiny space? 4gbs works great for me. it depends on the person. It may not be a reason for you to advance, bu tI'm willing to give up my 6gb for a 4gb.

How is it NOT a step forward?

I also read that you can change the headphone port to line-out through the settings? Is that right?

Funny, a year ago a bunch of iLoungers were ripping on me because I thought black would look much classier than white. Everybody got all defensive and kept telling me how futuristic the white iPod was.

Now suddenly everyone wants one in black.

Not impressed really :(

Okay it's a nice product for someone who doesn't have an amazingly large record collection and doesn't already have an iPod... but I wanted something to upgrade to :( I've been waiting to upgrade my 4G 20GB because I've really run out of space but didn't want to get another 4G. I might see if I can get a photo one cheap on eBay to satisfy myself til 5G comes out now

I like the design but at that price, it functions similarly to my 30Gig Photo so there's no reason.

The fact that they switched to flash removes the need for HDD buffer. I was expecting more battery life, rather than less battery life (when compared to the mini). Perhaps they couldn't get a battery to match the size of this model though. As for colour screens - every player on the market has one, I think it's about time Apple added it.

I'm not liking it too much, and it's nowhere near as revolutionary as they warned it would be (back in August). It's the current iPod slimmed way down as a result of buying flash memory from Samsung, which replaces the old micro drives. I don't see this as too revolutionary. Sure, it's flash, but again, is that really that revolutionary? I suppose that's debatable...

The player looks pretty nice, especially for how thin it is, but there are a few things I don't like about it. Audio jack at the bottom, and somewhat awkward length:width proportions.

No doubt this will fly off the shelves, but I won't be lining up for one. It's a step forward, but not a leap.

I personally don't like it so much, but it's only for it's looks. It sounds like it performs quite well. I just think apple missed the mark by taking away the minis. As a 2g mini owner, I love the look of it and the performance and think it's size is a perfect one for most normal cd collections. Now I know the nano has a 4gb, but I honestly think the nano's won't outsell the minis.

It's okay, I'm about to buy at 60gb ipod since they are so cheap now.

I don't think the iPod nano is off the mark. There are a lot of people whose song collections aren't very big; I'm perpetually surprised at the people who only own, say, 30 albums when I have well over 100 (iTunes says 152, but some of those are singles). These people don't need a Big Box O' Music; they need something they'd want to carry with them.

As far as the looks, don't knock 'em 'till you've tried 'em. :) People were apprehensive about the iPod mini's aluminum until they saw it in person. It should look very good, especially in that glossy black. And besides, the design is meant so that you can still hold it reasonably well in the hand. You want those blank spaces there so that you won't lose your grip or block the screen with your thumb.

It was Worth The Wait.
Everthing is wonderful except ur photo collection is not viewable on tv.
Any Idea wat the back look like. Apple.com focus the front & side.
In Long-term is the Internal Battery Re-placeable by 3rd Party?
Most likely Apple will charge $$ heftly.
Any idea if the batt is the same type as the minis.

What?

Don't be mad at all!

If you ordered from Apple Online, ring them and ask them to cancel the order. Then spend the money on a nano.

If you bought it instore, ask the store attendant to cancel your order, then buy a nano.

Yeah, the back looks like the big iPod! Chrome/Metallic, with Apple Logo, as we like it.

The Nano definately is nice, but I will not buy one.

I just bought another 6GB Mini, because of his look AND the Black/White Display!! Anybody thought of that? There isn´t a B/W display anymore in the iPod Line. I liked that too. I do have a 60 GB Colour iPod, and that´s a killer, but I´m glad also having a iPod with B/W Screen.
And the size of the mini ist perfect for my big hands. :)

I have a 6Gb Mini which I use in the car and for inspiration when I’m running on the track (I don't think it is safe to wear headphones when I run on the road.) I’ve never had a problem with the unit while running although the click wheel sometimes sticks; a problem from day one, and I should have returned it but didn’t. I also go to school in the evening and use the Mini when I’m studying in the library. My wife has the Shuffle which works perfectly for her.

I’ve been waiting for the new iPod from Apple and planned to replace my Mini when it was announced. I expected to see one or two new features – FM radio or built-in recorder would be nice. I wanted a record function in order to record some of my classes, allowing me to carry one less device. What Apple announced is a unit with less storage then my Mini, no new features and a poor battery life. I don’t consider the color screen useful, it is too small. I saw a reviewer on MSNBC gushing all over the Nano and I just don’t understand.

Apple seems to think they can sell “style” and perhaps they can but for this user, I won’t buy and I’m able to get it at academic pricing. I hesitate to say it here but I’ve decided go to another vendor who’s name I won’t mention, but has the features I need and the price I expect.

I too thought the nano wouldn't have enough storage space for me after going from 20gb to a measly 4gb, then I found out just how smart smart playlists really are!. Now I can manage an infinite sized collection with a basic live updating playlist that automatically puts onto the pod the 500 songs least recently listened to, perfect for me as it grabs the new stuff and stops stuff being repeated zillions of times as they drop of the playlist after being listened to.

It seems pretty cool to me but I'm kinda worried it might break because of how thin it is. But i guess I won't know just how durable it is until I see one in person at an Apple store or something.

it is possible to synch 2 ipod with one iTunes on one PC. Simply plug it in, and iTunes will lead you through it. With the nano, your music library is probably bigger than the player's capacity, so yes, creating a playlist of only 5 stars will probably help, then when you sync set the nano to only sync to that playlist.

This thread in the mini lounge (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22266) also give tips on how to set up various playlist to deal with the 4gb capacity.

I was pretty impressed by the first pics of the nano, but when I stopped by the Apple Store today (Valley Fair) and held one in my hands I couldn't believe it.

I kept convincing myself that I didn't have to get one, but behold I got in line and got a 2 gig black. 10 seconds it was in my hand I immediately knew that I had to have it.

Storage? I got my 15 gigger
Size? I got my shuffle

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that the Nano doesn't seem to have an analogue audio out on the connector?

This means it won't work with the Bose, Altec Lansing or any car adaptors that use the connector?

Not happy... it looks soo cute on my Bose.. it charges but won't play :(

Speakers
We’ve tested the nano with a good number of iPod speaker systems, and in our testing, speakers that get their audio from the dock connector—such as Bose’s SoundDock, Logitech’s mm50, JBL’s On Stage, Altec Lansing’s inMotion models, Klipsch’s iFi, and even iHome Audio’s iH5 clock radio—work with the iPod nano just as they do with other dockable iPods; audio is passed to the speakers as expected. In addition, on those systems with a wireless remote control, the remote also controls the nano’s playback, just as it does with mini and full-size iPods.

i just saw the ipod nano at best buy yesterday i have to say i love it. something that i would buy. small design with a screen something the shuffle doesn't have. chrome backing looks nice. tradional white ipod color with a black option. photo color screen on it. this looks nice the only thing i'm concerned about is the price they could've given it some more gigabytes for the price they're asking for. i would trade my ipod photo 30 gigabyte for two 4 gigabyte ipod nanos.

Bought it first thing Saturday morning after the release at the new Shibuya Apple store in Tokyo.

They only had 2 GB versions, which is fine for me as it is my second iPod. I will use this with my Windows platform, as my iPod G3 is associated with my iMac G5.

I love it! I was going to get the black one until I saw them in person. The black nano shows every fingerprint and scratch. The white is a clean, classic look. I got the white.

Hard to get used to the earphone jack on the bottom, but hey, that's the way it is.

The color screen is crisp, clean, good resolution.

I simply love it.

If you haven't actually seen the Nano yet, take a look at one in person before you trash it. *Very* high in the wow factor. The whole is definitely greater than the sum of the parts, so the specs aren't everything. Migrating the iPod line to flash memory is a great move considering that a lot of iPod problems are HD-related. The shuffle didn't interest me because of it's lack of control and the Mini's didn't seem all *that* smaller than my 30GB, but the Nano...perfect. What an elegant little package and at 4 GB of flash memory for $249, a bargain. I mean 4 GB of flash memory *alone* will set you back at least $200.

Well I'd sold my Shuffle in anticipation of this cuz I needed a screen.

+ design
+ color screen
+ screen lock (if you hook it up to computer, it unlocks it so if it's stolen, it can be unlocked this way?)

- low capacity
- plastic and steel case scratch more than iPod Mini's aluminum case
- no Firewire support

? headphone jack in wrong spot
? actual battery life, especially if displaying a lot of album art
? belt clip in the nano tubes or some other skin
? will tubes or some other case just make it thick and heavy (like the Apple Sport case for the Shuffle did)

Not sure about it. Will check for more long-term impressions of actual use. Want to replace my 1G Mini but no gain in capacity is a drag. But my Mini is sucking on battery life.

A few quick questions:

Does the nano support on-the-go playlists?

Did they fix the problem that the main iPod line has after the last update where smart playlists weren't automatically updated on the player? (i.e. rate something ***** and it should show up in a five-star smart playlist)

Any software features missing from the nano as opposed to the iPod with colour screen? (I already know there's no support for remote-jack-based devices and of course no TV out).

Don't know about the smart playlists.

As far as software features, the only thing I believe is missing in terms of software is that the Camera Connector won't work with the nano. It's just as well; many people's camera memory cards could take up a significant portion of the nano's storage!

My daughter and I went over to CompUSA here in Salt Lake on Friday. They only have the 2gb versions for now, but I had to get a hands-on for a few minutes with this.

I definetely want one. And I was hoping that my daughter would want one, too. But she's still hoping for a 20gb 4G iPod for her birthday in couple of weeks.

I think the idea is wonderful and a friend of mine is simply waiting for the 4gb to become available locally so he can upgrade from his 1gb Shuffle.

Of course, would be even better if we had an Apple store here.

i dont know about this new iPod nano. i know its really small but think about it... for $250 you get a 4 Gb iPod nano, but for only $50 more you get x5 times the capacity in a 20 Gb iPod...makes no sense...you are only payin that $250 for the small size of that thing...different types of buyers i guess.

jamester
09-11-2005, 08:30 PM
Funny, but that seems to be *exactly* what people said about the mini when it first came out. "Why would you buy a 4GB player for $249 when you can spend $299 and get 20GB?" The answer is the same now as it was then... some people don't need 20GB, and for others, size is more important for one reason or another.

You might as well ask, why buy a 20GB player for $299 when for only $100 more you can have three times the storage (60GB)?

I bought the 20GB colour late in August, but returned it because in my opinion, it was too thick. I was used to the 20GB B&W that my wife has, and it's thinner than the new color model. Needless to say, I was pretty excited about the nano and I bought it right away.

I bought a black 4gig nano today, should have it by the end of the day (my missus is picking it up for me she works closer to the apple shop)

I sold my blue ipod 4gig mini to get the nano..

Capacity doesnt bother me really, I sit near a computer all day at work, and work out at the gym four to five times a week.

Due to working near a computer, capacity isnt an issue, if I want to change the music, it's a simple transfer... Having said that, I've never really filled an ipod with more than 3gig or so. I usually have it sitting around 2gig. I like to throw a few work doc's on it to take home too. Dont get me wrong I have enough music to fill 60gig of hdd space, but just couldnt deal with that much to navigate through and 'rate', etc.

Size is THE most imporant thing for me. Shuffle doesnt have enough capacity, but the new nano is damn PERFECT for my requirements. 4gig, just like my mini had, but smaller again! and the size will be great for the gym. To be honest even my ipod mini sometimes felt a little heavy in my pocket whilst working out.

There's a lot of ppl at my gym with ipod's of all types! lot's of 'mini's on the excersize machines (treadmills, steppers, bikes, rowers, etc), lots of 'shuffles' around the necks of the boxer circuit people, and the weightlifters run all different ipod's.. There's just something cool about pumping iron or throwing punches to some cranking music from your ipod!

I think Apple have it just right. Shuffle for serious mobility and simplicity, nano for mobility and capacity, and full iPod for serious muso's, dj's, and perhaps less-active people (bites tounge)..

There's an ipod to suit everyone! I thought the Mini was good, a great mid-range unit.. but now the Nano, DAMN! haha

each to their own, I just hope that everyone can enjoy an iPod. Thanks Steve for yet another breakthrough in portable music!

For me, the 14hrs or so of playback will be awesome! (compared to the 7hrs or so I had on my 1st gen mini) I just cant complain about 14hrs! :)

James

I love the form factor...it's the perfect size and you wouldn't want one any smaller. But the capacity is just too low for my needs. At a minimum, I'd want one that can fit all of my 5-star songs, which number 2,500. I'll wait for the 5G to come out, which hopefully will be within a month or so.

At the current pace of price declines for flash memory, how long do you guys think it'll be before they can make a 20 Gb Nano?

My neighbor has a 2nd gen iPod mini, recently purchased, that also seems to have acquired the crackling audio problem. I thought this problem had been licked, but apparently not consistently?

Perhaps they "replaced" the mini because of the seemingly frequent crackling audio problems? I'm terribly, terribly torn with whether to buy a 4 GB nano, which offers no more capacity but does have great features, looks and size (I use to think my green mini looked cool, but now it just looks dated - damn you, Apple! :), or a discontinued 30 GB iPod photo. On the one hand I'd really like to be able to have my entire library with me, and on the other hand I love cool looking tiny electronic devices and I've never really been that keen on the looks of the full-size iPod. I got a black 4 gig (but for some reason it says 3.7 in About... ;_____;) and it's great.

You'll probably want to FULLY charge and then FULLY discharge the battery at least three times to get better battery life. The first charge will likely not last as long as subsequent charges.

Be sure to FULLY charge and then FULLY discharge your Nano (or any other Li-Ion battery) at least three times at first to "condition" the battery. It should hold a longer-lasting charge after that.

If you do that and are still only getting about seven hours, you may have gotten a bad battery. It happens. Contact AppleCare.

Love the Nano, got the Blk 2gig from the Stonestown Mall San Francisco Apple Store 1st day shipped to them last week. It also works with my Onkyo DS-A1 dock, I can control it with the remote.
The black seems scratch easy, so be careful with it. But my Shuffle seems to be brighter in sound, haven't really messed with the Nano's EQ settings yet, maybe it's just the EQ on the Nano.

A trick is to rate songs that you want to delete with one star, and then you can delete all of the one star songs when you sync again.

It's not as convenient as being able to delete tracks in the player, but it's a work-around.

i love my nano.

but one thing apple may have wanted to consider is the durability. my mini is rock solid, never thought i needed a case for that one. such a scratch prone design will not go over well with reviewers.

also, being relativly weak, will hurt apple as well. im sure many broken nanos will find there way back to apple.....

now i love mine, i think its great. for some reason, probably design, i never really thought of the mini as a "real" ipod. but the nano is just like its bigger brothers. the flash memory is also great for running.

im going to solve the durability issues with a good case, as i suggest to anyone else with this wonderful little player.

i bought mine the same week it came out on the website (ordered through apple, too) and i already need to take it in to get repaired! other than that, i loved how small it was and it did work pretty well. yeah, the battery wasn't the best, but i was home to charge it by the time it'd die out.

Overall, quite happy with my purchase. I was one of those lucky customers who heard about the whole 'scratch' issue while waiting for my order to be processed. So when my Nano came, I left the 'Don't Steal Music' plastic film on it till I got the Contour iSee Nano clear case which retains the shape and sleekness of my iPod Nano.

got my 2G black nano several days ago, i am really impressed by its slimness. it's maybe the cutest mp3 player i've ever seen. i bought it from apple's hongkong website, and i had it engraved cause it would be the first gift i'd send to my girlfriend. it cost me 1550 HKD, that equals to 200 USD, in china, the price converted to USD is roughly 240 USD.

Very nice iPod, I love mine to bits. Before this i had been given a Samsung MP3 player for my birthday. This lasted a few weeks then the headphone port started going wrong so I took it back with the recipt for a replacement but they had none in stock.

I was given the choice of paying a bit more to upgrade or my money back so I went and had a look at the MP3's there in the store. Instantly spotted the iPod Nano and asked if I could upgrade to that. They had one in stock so I got the white one.

Well, what a great little machine. I really am impressed with it indeed. I love mine to bits, I really do. My cd collection is huge but I don't neccessarily like every track on each album so I only have on my iPod exactly the tracks that I want to hear.

Just about 338 tracks on there now and everyone that gets played on shuffle is a winner. I like the shuffle feature, as I say, every track is great and I have heard some tracks I have not heard for a while now, excellent.

I think it will be good at a party, put it on shuffle, plug it into the hi-fi or FM it to the radio/cd player and away you go, perfect! Couldn't ask for more, a great little product.

Hello,

now it´s official.

Who needs such a small thing? Me. The regular iPods are nowhere near what I would call portable.

I'm not too fond of the headphone jack being on the bottom of the nano. Seems a bit unorthodox seeing as you would probably be holding it upside down. I guess you could adapt to the headphone jack, but it's a bit strange.

I don't get that. Headphone jacks belong on the bottom of a device. that way when you hold it the cable is coming through your hand instead of flopping over the screen. Why would you hold the nano upside down just to negate the improved placement. Seriously, i want to hear what i'm missing here. Why is it better to have the headphone jack up top?

no one mentions the real battery life of the new nano..

so users..give me an honest answer? how's the battery life on nano?

I got 15 hours. Apple is known for understating thier batteries.

I prefer my 1st gen. 2gb. Nano ( currently being replaced for a bad battery) because it has more of the traditional iPod look and to be honest I think it looks cleaner and sharper ( and fatter:o ) than the new Nano.

jough
09-13-2006, 04:33 PM
I get about 10-12 hours of battery life from my nano, but I tend to flip around a lot and have my stuff encoded at a fairly high bitrate.

I figure if the battery on the 2G really lasts 24+ hours for most people, it'll last about 20 hours for me, and since I put it on the charger every night that means unlimited battery life.

Sometimes I could run down the 10-12 hour battery, but the 20 hour means it'll go all day no matter how much I use it. That's about right.

although old nano looks more stylish i think new nano is better because of its battery life, more durable design, better pricing and more storage space. also the packaging is good but it is weird that they don't give installation cd. i find it a little disturbing to be forced to download itunes from internet at the very first minute.

it would be a good idea to load the itunes setup into nano. so when people connect the player to their computer for the 1st time they could do the installation and start to use their player immediately.

it's the size factor that won over me.

Is anyone else's 8 gig's capacity limited to 7.45 gigs?

In the iPod device menu, near the bottom mine says that it has 7.45 gb capacity. That is more than half a gig missing. What's going on?

It's just the way the math works out with what a gigabyte is and how many bytes it's equal to. for example if you bought a 100 gig hard drive you'd really have something like 93 gigs of true space on it. Nothing is wrong.

On a side note. Why on earth do you have so many Ipods? Not that it's really my business I guess.

It's the difference between 1,000mg = 1Gb or the Windows/Mac use of 1Gb, which is actually 1,024mb.

It's because the computer uses base8 rather than base10 math. Fun stuff.

This is true of any kind of drive of any kind of capacity. Check your hard drive capacity - it'll be "less" than the advertised amount of space.

I got a mini way way way back when it came out. I saw the nano when it first came out and thought it was cool enough to justify paying the new price (minus the college student discount) and after a while, it just wasn't enough memory. I don't have near 8 gigs, but I have more than 4.

Besides, when I got rid of my old ones, I gave them to my parents so that they would have something to use. I probably wouldn't have got the new nano yet if I hadn't got a bonus at work. Lucky me I guess.

I think I hear it too. Kind of a static, tearing noise. Usually hear it at the start of tracks. Sometimes during heavy passages too, suggesting it might be a kind of distortion. Notice it more on my IEMs (Shure E2Cs) than my other headphones (Koss KSC-35, Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pros, Grado SR80s).

Hi there

I am a newcomer to this site and all things ipod to be honest. I have owned an mp3 player from (cough) Iriver until just recently.Unfortunately I was plagued with battery problems, couldn't get them to replace my player with the same model so I did a battery transplant but it wouldn't work very well with rockbox and I hate iriver firmware. I therefore sold it to my dad who is very happy because he has 20gb of space for all his albums.

My next problem was what to go with next. The iriver guys were extremely anti-ipod and I suppose I went along with that, but a friend of mine just bought himself a 30gb ipod photo and having worked with Apple products for most of his career has always said he would get an ipod. I went to his flat and he showed my his player, showed me how itunes worked and I suddenly realised that using itunes wasn't such a bind as I thought. Then on hearing the sound quality I was blown away with it. A very pure sound with just the right amount of treble and bass for my liking. I don't like having to use eq settings and this was perfect for me.

Anyway I started browsing the Apple website and this one day I look and see the nano has been updated, with an 8gb model, in black with maximum battery life of 24 hours. That was another thing that put me off the ipod in that the max you could get from the old nano and the current photo/video was just 14 hours. 2 hours less than the iriver which I thought was pretty poor. Anyway my wife and I both decided we wanted one and said that Christmas should be early for us this year so we both bought one this weekend and I am totally in love with the ipod. Sound quality is fantastic, you don't have to turn the volume up really high to get a good sound and itunes is a doddle to use. Used my player for about 10 hours on Monday as well and the battery indcator was still well over half full so the battery life is as good as the specs say (I believe it uses a lithium ion rather than lithium polymer battery which have a much longer life than the latter).

So I am glad to be here with other ipod owners. Am very pleased with this baby player and for such a small machine it blasts out a really great sound.

I'm sitting here with my 4th generation 20gb biding my time until Apple releases 8gb models in more colours (green, blue, pink, silver - like the 4gb). Then, I will either sell my 4th gen on eBay or use the iPod recycling program (whichever works out to save me the most money).

...I want either a pink or green one so badly. [Salivating ensues.]

Probably not before Christmas. Last year, they introduced the Nano and 5G in September and didnt' change the iPod lineup until like February or so when they added the 2GB and later the 1GB models.

so by Feb of next year, would they release a 2GEN 8GB nano in more colors.. or like last Feb (after the nano and 5G were released the year before in Sept) would they just do something like take away the 2GB nano and be selling a 1GB, 4GB, and 8GB but in the same colors or something like that???

does that make sense?

I'm passing on the 8GB nano, I want larger capacity than my 1G 4GB offered..but the problem comes when I first got my 2GB nano I thought that'd be large enough, but it wasn't so I took it back and got a 4gb..well then it wasn't either. I have 500MB of space left on this one, I was thinking 8gb would be enough, but I decided to just go back to the video iPod (which I lost) but this time with a 80gb capacity.

I just received my 8 gig 2nd gen black Nano. I must say it really feels different in my hand compared to hubby's 1st gen Nano. The surface is so matte smooth. I love the curved sides. I prefer the black color overall. I mostly like that the scroll wheel and top/bottom is also black. It just looks so sexy. I'm not one for the metallic colors w/the white scroll wheel anyway.

The click wheel feels more responsive. I have experienced some freezing of songs before and after the latest firmware update. But it is very occasional. The good news is that I don't have any of the horrid buzzing sound that many here were complaining about. What a relief!

I am a proud Owner of a 3G 40GB ipod. I still think it's the best generation for DOCKING. I have it on my bedside table, and i only have to touch it to control the beast... Sound is great for such a device, from the Line out is even better (it's a compliment, as i am a Hifi audio fanatic).

ABOUT NANOS...!

Enough about build quality, battery, Colors etc. etc.

SOUND TEST
hardware: 1G-4GB nano / 2G-4GB nano
Software: ALL of them updated to LATEST VERSION (11/12/2006)
Music: HUNDREDS of (well known to me) songs. Pure WAV & MP3 128 CBR / VBR.
Test duration: 12 hours of listening, with some intervals, almost at home.

------ MY FACTS ------
ALL TESTED WITH OLD (let's call them ORIGINAL) Apple earbuds.
I CANNOT TELL the difference between the 2 of them & my 3G 40gb.
I LOVE the sound of my 40gb 3G ipod, so, it's a compliment to say the NANO's are up to it.
I will not go into "audiophile" terms, so let's just say that i was DRAWN into the music.

ALL TESTED WITH NEW (let's call them ERGONOMICALY IMPROVED!) Apple earbuds.
ALSO, I CANNOT TELL the difference between the 2 of them & my 3G 40gb. (so, that's consistent results).
SOUND LACKS BASS DETAIL. HIGHS are "over the top!", MIDS are not as WARM as the ORIGINAL earbuds. SO, TO MY EARS, the NEW earbuds ARE NOT AN IMPROVEMENT OVER THE OLD.
MUSIC SUCKS. Enough said.

I WILL NOT RECOMMEND THE NEW "tiny tiny" earbuds to Anyone. SO, i'm tired of reading "THE NEW IMPROVED earbuds". What the hell!!! IMPROVED? YES. THEY FIT great into the ears, THEY almost SEAL, THEY do not fall... Downside: SOUND & a lot of PAIN in the ears (used without the "pads")!

SO... Go buy the NEW nano if YOU KNOW what u want & don't mind shopping for new phones OR... buy the OLD ONE, with nice discount, with the old buds. You won't go wrong either way. I would prefer the NEW one (battery life, look & feel) with REALLY IMPROVED earbuds.

BOTTOM LINE: both nanos are GOING back. I will stick to my original plan: To buy the new Shuffle with OLD earbuds, Load it with ONE wav LP, or some MP3, and go WALK or RUN. That's was my point. Won't need a Nano for that. THINK of what U want first... THE NANO won't replace a 40gb ipod, so... might stick to something "cheap", that will please me right out of the box.

Nice christmas to all!

I've been researching ipods for the last couple of weeks and I still have a few questions I can't get answered. I am leaning toward the black 8gb ipod nano but I was hoping I could get the iskin chill pack with it. (note: i'm not talking about the upgraded duo pack. I'm talking about the original) My problem is that I'm not sure the two would look good together considering its a black ipod. Is there anyone out there that has a black ipod nano that has tried or uses the iskin chill pack (or any other brand blue or purple silicon case)? Do the colors still look good or does the ipod just make them look muddy? Is there a place that has pictures of a black ipod with a silicon case on it? Or should I just stick with the leather belkin case???

I have been to the iskin site and the only pictures they have there are of a silver ipod with the cases on it. So I know a silver ipod looks good with it but I'm not sure of any other color. Please help! Thank you.
