View Full Version : EX51/71 Questions
Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Okay, I need a new pair of earbuds. I have Sony EX51s now in Black but they are broken now. The sound just died. I have a few questions!
1. I'm thinking of buying the EX71s in white. I've heard the Japanese version is better. Is this true, and if so, why? Also, where is the best place to buy the Japanese pair?
2. I lost my EX51's earbuds a lot. They always seemed to fall out. This is probably a pointless question, but is there anyway to reduce that from happening?
3. I have heard complaints about the cord length (too long with extension) of the EX71s. I like how the EX71s come with the case (unlike the EX51s) but is the cord length really that bad?
Thank you for your help!

hey fellow pittsburgher,
i've had the ex-71s since about april, and i do really like them. i've heard a lot of complaints about the sound being muddy, which i've just started to notice in the last month or so, but they are pretty decent for the price.
i can't help you with questions 1 & 2, but as far as question 3 is concerned..
let me put it this way - probably about 70% of the reason i'm planning on getting new earphones is because of that stupid cord. it is extremely, extremely short without the extension. the only possible way you can use them without the extension is if you have a remote for your ipod, and even that way you may be straining to reach everything properly. i usually place my ipod in my pocket while walking, and with the extension the cord runs probably down to the lower half of my thighs and then runs up to connect to the ipod in my pocket (i'm about 5'3"). so the cord tends to be really bothersome.

Kupo,
I'm not aware of any benefits of a Japanese version, though I could be wrong..
The reason they fall out frequently could be because of a couple reasons. First, these aren't canal phones that go deep into your ear canal like Etymotics, Shures, or UE's, they are simply in-ears, which are better than regular earphones for comfort and "isolation", but not nearly as good as canalphones. Another reason could be because the included sizes of ear-tips do not fit your ear properly.
The reason many find the cord length on the 71SLs annoying is because they are meant to be used with a remote (which is what the short style is used for) or simply the long option (many find it too long, I'm fine with it from what I've used).
A few questions - Where did you buy the 51's from? You may be eligible for Sony's one year warranty. Give them a call and you may be able to snag a free pair of 51's again. If not I'd try Amazon or another cheap online vendor and get another pair of those if you're worried about the length of the 71's.

Thanks anneffigy. I am 5'9" so the cord definitely wouldn't reach my pocket.... :(

I mean the actual ear bud covers fall off. Like sometimes when they're in my pocket, they will fall out. I lost 3 of my 6 ear covers that way. Nevermind that, I just need to be more careful. :P
I got my 51s from Best Buy.

The actual ear-tips fall off? I've never had that happen with mine..
Call Best Buy and ask if there is a warranty they provide or if Sony can provide it through Best Buy. I bought mine from The Sony Store and had no problems with the warranty. Mine have had to be returned twice, I simply walked in with a receipt, told them the problem, and left with a new pair. If not, you can always find a $25 pair of EX51's from Amazon.

Okay Doug, I'll try that.
