eye of newt

I've searched the forums for similar topics and found some, but as I'm a novice, you'll have to excuse me because there are so many program names being thrown around with various criticisms, I don't know which would be best to use or if I need one at all for my purposes.
I have a 4G ipod mini (regretting to opt for portability over storage space), which I recently uploaded my home computer's library to. The problem is I use my laptop for most of the year while I'm at college, and while a sizable number of songs are the same, I've downloaded some files from itunes and other sources on each computer, so the libraries are different.
I would now like to maintain all the songs on my ipod, and just update it with the tracks and playlists on my laptop that I don't already have. I would then like to transfer all the files I don't have on my laptop to my hard drive so in the future I can just autosync. Is there a simple, accident-free way I can do this?
I'd appreciate any help I can get as I'm fairly clueless.
