My iPod mini froze up, and when I tried to restore using the most current version of the updater I got this error message ("firmware update failure disk write error"). I spent plenty of time going through the apple support website and reading all the postings I could find through google searches. Although this appears to be a very common problem for the ipod, I could find no ready sure-fire solution that didn't sound quirky and idiosyncratic. So I finally broke down and called apple (they give you one free tech call with your original warranty). The tech support guy told me that the only way he knew of to fix this problem (which he noted occurs most frequently among users of pc laptops - I have a dell) was to run the newest version of ipod updater on my ipod ON ANOTHER COMPUTER. I had read this in some of the postings I encountered, but thought it too quirky to be a dependable solution. Apparently, I thought wrong and wanted to let others know that this is the "official" fix for the "firmware update failure disk write error" message. Actually I have yet to try it since my roommate is not home yet. I'll report back on my success or failure...
