Well, I'm at 3000 and growing....I have only reripped less than half of the half of my CD collection.

There's a lot of stuff in my collection that I don't have a current interest in listening to....either now or using my iPod.

Though I was in a panic yesterday....my computer died....the thought reinstalling everything was one thing, but having to rip everything again was a bigger fear. Fortunately doing a repair installation has enough working again. And, the first thing was to make some backups 8-)

When I'm done...I'll probably have about 30G of tunes....which is larger than what I had originally ripped as MP3's...but my MP3 player was only a 20G, my iPod is a 40G.

I have unique only around 200 songs, however I need to duplicate them to do a stress test of software. So, I wrote a small utility for duplication song file with random id3 tag hundred times. So, I have more than 6000 songs now, cool!

why would anyone get a utility to make a copy of a song with bad a bad id3 tag. Bad id3 tags are a real problem. Downloaded songs often have the wrong information and the file name is even worse. (by the way itunes sstore sucks)

I am the one person with over 10,000 songs? Strange. There are several reasons. (40 gig by the way -- have had it just under 2 weeks).

1) Quantity vs. Quality. I don't listen to music on a 'quality' system. I just use little passive Sony speakers at work, standard 4 speaker car stereo via cassette adapter in the car, OEM headseat out and about, or some $20 Koss in-ear buds. I can't tell a song ripped at 256 from 96. So my stuff is mostly at 96 or 128 on my iPod.

2) Age. I'm almost 40. I've had more time to accumulate Cds than the rest of you.

3) emusic.com. That used to be all-you-can-eat for $10 a month and have hundreds of CDs from that. I actually deleted the vast majority of the CDs I downloaded from eMusic because they sucked... the few hundred I have are the ones I liked a lot or was interested in enough to give a chance.

4) Unlike a lot of you, I want to have as much stuff as possible on my iPod JUST IN CASE I need or want it. Oh, sure, the Tuvian throat singing or ABBA may not be my cup of tea most days, but who knows? It's there just in case I want to hear it, or want to play it for someone else.

5) I don't need to use the iPod for hard drive purposes... it's just for music, so nothing is competing with mp3s for space.

6) There is little that's as fun as having a 10,000+ playlist on shuffle on a drive, going from Chopin to Pink Floyd to Merle Haggard to Mingus... sometimes there's stuff I'd hate if I listened to the whole CD (like Belle and Sebastian or Yo La Tengo) but if I hear one song in the middle of a bunch of other stuff, I appreciate it more.

Just a side note.. as far as mp3 collections go my friend has the largest collection I have ever seen (or heard of). Over 25,000. It's all on his computer (rather mutliple USB-connected ide harddrives... no ipod. He has just about everything under the sun.

I personally format my computer about ever other month and lose all my mp3's and redownload everything. In the last month I have grabbed over 1000 songs. Im getting my 15g ipod so I never have to download the same song again! I have probably downloaded like 15,000 mp3s in my life (many many duplicates). When I get stuff on kazaa... it usually takes about 4-5 downloads to get one good version of a song im satisfied with.

I have recently purchased a 20GB 3G iPod. It has currently 3,130 songs on it (most in 192 Kbps) and it take sup 15GB of space.

Battery life is between 6 and 8 hours from what i have tested.

I always borrow loads of CDs off my Dad, cause we like atlot of the same music! He's shown me Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Pet Shop Boys. And I thank him every dad for showing me the Beatles, I will never think of music the same again! Current mainstream pop music really annoys me, and I feel ready to kill these "rock" bands like Busted. Pople are grwoing up, beleving that this is what sounds like!!! Update:

3000 tracks or so with the Alice Cooper Discography now... Once I get my iBook I will be at around 5000 :D I am contemplating perhaps holding off a bit so I can have enough for a 40GB iPod and an iBook as the Cram and Jam educational deal would sell the 40GB for around $275 Canadian... I think I'll hold off for the 5G though.

Why does it #### you off? I own a 20gb iPod mini but only have 584 songs right now. The reason I bought a 20gb version is because I saw no logical reason to buy say the 4gb version which holds 1000 songs. Why? Because at least with 20gb, you almost never have to worry about running out of space. It takes a long time to fill up 20gb with songs.

Value for money in my opinion. I am continually buying new CDs all the time, but one thing I don't want to have to worry about is running out of space. I won't with the iPod 20gb mini. If you can afford it, why not buy bigger capacity?

well the reason i only have 343 songs on a 40gig iPod is because of
1.) comes with dock
2.) All others would be in for another 2 months at best buy
3.) was not going to buy off net because of service plan
4.) never have to worry about nopt enough space
5.) can be used as a large capacity storage device

So stop complaining that people dont have enough music and thinking that we are stupid. I'm sure we all have our reasons.

I have 3,907 songs. Here's my playlist (http://www.dirtybible.com/meph/blog/goodstuff/playlist2.html). Most of it is rock, with a bit of classic rock and some rap thrown in. 50% of it is music I own, but I have yet to rip all my CD's and add them.

Reasons for having an iPod with larger storage capacity than you have songs:

1) You can put more than music on an iPod
2) Price/GB for a mini = $62.50; Price/GB for a 20 = $15. $50 more for 16 more GBs isn't that bad, ya know?
3) Music collections grow

So why would you get ####ed at someone with a 20 GB player with only 500 songs?

I used WinAmp to generate an html playlist, that I then modified pretty extensively. Once I got all the formatting I wanted, I can just copy and paste everything in. Here (http://web.mit.edu/maryr/www/amusements/winamp.html) is what the default playlist looks like.
