Now I'm feeling pretty foolish, but what is the suggested (recommended) sampling rate for MP3 files -- 41 or 44khz?

I know that 44 is the CD standard, but Cdex comes out of the box configured with 41 as the default and nowhere in my net searching can I find information on what rate to use for MP3s. I'm feeling pretty foolish, since I ought to know this stuff, but perhaps in my old age I'm suffering from brain freeze.

44,1 should do fine. Anything higher is for sync. purposes, usually connecting multiple streams of audio together ( not nessasary for ripping a CD).

So when ripping a CD, is there no difference or no reason to rip at 48 instead of 44? I've been encoding with 48.

CD's are encoded at 44.1, any higher and you will be wasting information, you can't gain information, or sound quality.

A sampling rate of <44.1 will mean that less 'samples' are taken of the sound wave, therefore you will get less of a representation of the original signal. Which is good if you don't really notice it, because it saves space.
