I just got a new ipod photo 60g. Had 3 prior ipods hooked into my itunes library on my pc. Updated new software so ipod is up to date. running latest version of itunes (4.9). new ipod is formated. Itunes popup comes up and says the software required for communicating with the ipod is not installed correctly. please reinstall itunes to install the ipods software. i don't want to reinstall the itunes software for fear that i may lose playlists, etc and it seems like a hassle. I tried to hook it up to my laptop (which has only a few songs) and had no problem getting it recognized and was prompted to transfer songs. so the problem is only on the PC. do i have too many ipods hooked into one library/itunes? help?

Dood! Same thing happened to me! Have you by any chance diabled some of the stuff that starts up automatically when the computer bootds up? I had and it turned out to be the problem. I reinstalled iTunes and it was all good to go after that

so you got the same error message? my story gets worse - I'm now getting the same message when i connect the old 20g ipod. why would itunes suddenly have a problem with my ipod after many synch's? sounds like the itunes is corrupt? but get this -
so i try to download itunes again from apple.com. and the download page comes up and the area where you click do download is completely missing. same thing with the software updater. totally not there. what could be wrong? i can't do anything with either ipod and this pc since i can't download itunes. i think i found a link for apple download this am via U of M. need to make sure i don't lose playlists - i'm freaking about that.
what do you mean when you ask "Have you by any chance diabled some of the stuff that starts up automatically when the computer bootds up?" i took off the mcafee protection but that is it.
if i reboot with the ipod connected i get a blue screen (this can't be good) at startup that says something about the K: drive (the usb bus port that i have ipod plugged into) and it is checking issues or something like that. this went away when i rebooted without the ipod connected.
