the only thing that keeps me from buying an ipod on ebay is the warranty... is it:

* voided if i buy it from a person and not a store?

* world wide?

* only for functional problems, or can i drop it and have it replaced?

thanks

The short answer is no. The warranty is worldwide.

BUT (there's always a but), iPod's have a 1 year warranty only. Meaning if you purchase an iPod on ebay that's older than 1year, your out of luck with the warranty.

The warranty covers the iPod if it breaks down so long as the user wasnt careless with it. Apple however, will not just replace the unit if there isnt anything wrong with it (scratches, dents, etc... dont count for the warranty).

It's my understanding that the warranty covers your iPod from the time it's registered with Apple until one year later. If the individual you're buying one from has already registered it in his/her name, you might not be covered. The warranty is good worldwide.

thanks..! with dropping it, i meant if i drop it and it stops functioning, or if i have to handle it like a baby for the warranty not to be voided... but since it seems to be world wide, i prefer paying $200 less for a (sealed, of course) ipod on ebay than here in sweden--- i'm pretty worried that i'll be a brick instead of an ipod (i've been ripped off before), but what the heck..

Hey.. similar situation.. I got the iPod off ebay.. and registered it with Apple, citing ebay as the purchase place. The firewire port recently crapped out, and i tried to get them to replace it, but they say the iPod is out of warranty (which it shouldn't be) and asked for proof of purchase. Any ideas what to send them (Pay pal receipt, ebay order confirmation, etc.)?

Also, it should be completely legit. Its less than 90 days from the purchase date, purchased from a reseller (i.e. bought then sold.) If it didn't include resellers, than all the people buying off Small Dog, Target, CompUSA, etc. would not have an Apple warranty.. which is not the case.

Just my $0.02.

so if my ipod messes up, does it get replaced by an old ipod or one of the new ones?

The iPods should get replaced with the same model. Apple has warehouses full of iPods for this purpose (how do you think they can sell them refurbished?)
