I'm using my laptop, and i'm thinking about getting a firewire to USB port. Can i transfer songs and charge at the same time using the USB?

O and another thing. My laptop has a 4 pin firewire port and i bought a 4 to 6 pin adapter. However when i plug it all in, the software says that ipod is not connected. What is causing my computer not to detect the ipod?

I'm not sure if you can, but USB carries much LESS current than firewire, hence the use. I'd assume that when that little HD is spinning its arse off, its using a ####load of power, more than USB can give it.

I'm sure somebody who owns an iPod can tell you.

USB does not supply iPod with power.

why does the ipod use so much current? I have a 2.5" external usb hdd that can be completely powered by usb

Because it gets hot.

Creating heat takes up a crap load of energy, and add that to the little motor spinning up inside the ipod, and the LCD screen and you have got a power sucking devil.

I've even heard stories of some guy charring his LCD from transferring too many songs at once.

I use firewire for syncing at home and USB for syncing at work.

USB transfers make my iPod *sweat*! The iPod gets very warm...almost HOT, whilst on firewire only slightly warm. Not sure I understand why.

I do know that the disk NEVER stops spinning on USB, even when iPod is un-mounted...keeping the iPod *warm* Un-mounted on Firewire ...disk stop spinning.
