First off, I'm running Win2k Professional, and connected though a firewire card.

I First tried to restore the ipod as a wipod by just using the updater from the apple web page because I plan on using ephpod. But, when attempting to restore (the computer reconizes the ipod, I get the "do not disconnect" screen, and the ipod manager see's the ipod there) after pressing restore button, I almost immediatly get a message saying "Can't lock ipod. Please check if any other applications are using ipod and try again."

What can I do to try to fix this? I've attempted with just the updater, and also the cd. I've reinstalled both many times. What could be causing me to get this message?

Ok... So I fiddled around a bit and discovered some new stuff... I got impatient, and downloaded the ephpod w/ a demo of the mac opener. Everything worked, and I was able to upload songs onto the ipod with a good transfer rate (6.5 mb/sec). But, I couldn't unmount the device safely, and had to hard restart, adn then unplug. The songs are still on the ipod, but I dont want to abuse it this way.

What works:
*ipod
*firewire
*ephpod (w/ macopener)

what doesn't work:
*updater
*safe disconnect

anyone got any ideas?

Also, I cannot unmount the ipod because it says it's currently being used by other programs...

Well, there's your answer. You have something that is accessing the iPod's drive.

Now, what could that be? A number of things. First, try disabling your anti-virus software.

Next, check in Task Manager and look for any services/processes that are running that could be accessing the iPod. Disk Utilities? Thing like that.

Also, if you see iPodsrv or iPodmgr running, kill them.

Keep trying, something in there is accessing that drive letter.

And the reason ephpod worked of course is that you installed MacOpener.

I removed my anti-virus software as a whole to attempt to format, I ended the ipodmanager.exe and it wouldn't allow me to end ipodservice.exe. What would a disk utility program look like?

So, I went got access to another computer with XP and a firewire card. I restored the ipod (which worked fine on that machine), and then upon plugging into my computer I faced similar problems with disconnecting. I uninstalled ipod manager, and only have mmjb (w/o ipod plugin), updater, and ephpod 2.70b. To disconnect I go to the explorer and select "eject", which produces an error message saying tha the device is still in use (ephpod already finished with everything) but gives me an option to end all processes and safely remove the device. I select that, and all appears to be good. Ipod no longer says "do not disconnect" and the drive says it's empty. But the device manager (green arrow) still says it's plugged in, and when I disconnect the ipod it says I didn't safely disconnect, dispite ipod not saying "do not disconnect"

Try not doing it through the disk-eject method. Just left-click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon, the iPod should come up as a device to disconnect, then try that.

I'll be iPod Manager/iPodsrv.exe is screwing something up here.

Make sure you close ephpod before unmounting the iPod.

It won't let me "stop" the process from the safely remove hardware icon. It says it's still in use, even when the ipod drive (in the explorer) says that it's disconnected.
