Help! I Can't Use my iPod!!!!

i just got an 40 gig ipod today for my birthday and i already messed it up i formatted the hard drive now all i get is the folder with the caution symbol on it. and it stays locked on disk mode. and to make things worse im using windows 98se which ipod supposedly doesnt support. im really thinking about sending this ipod back. i cant get it to run and it always stays in disconnect mode and when i tried to restore it the software says "Can't mount ipod" in the software updater. So i can't ever restore it to back the way it was or run my ipod. After i tried using the trick to install the updater on here. I don't know what else to do to get this thing working i've been working on it for hours. can somebody here guide me help me out or something my email is phillyishot@aol.com or can i at least talk to somebody over the phone. I'm really considering sending this thing back.

That should hopefully get you to a point where you can run a software restore.

So, you're trying to run the 2.0.1 updater right? You didn't download the 1.3 updater program by mistake right?

Are any other programs (like anti-virus) accessing the drive? Try turning off your anti-virus program....

You're using firewire right...oh yeah, no USB2 in 98...nevermind. The iPod shows up fine in My Computer and you can open it and can you copy files over to it (they won't show on the iPod, but you should at least be able to drag some files to it as a hard drive).
