I have a Kenwood iPod unit connected to my Kenwood head unit, but it is extremely frustrating to use. The bonus is that the iPod is hidden away (in my case, in the glove compartment), but it is VERY frustrating trying to control the iPod from the head unit. The display only shows Song Title and Playlist Title, not artist, so searching for a specific song is pretty much impossible. Also, the Kenwood only has a two digit track display, so anything over 99 starts over at 1. I suppose with some extremely creative Playlist programming I could organize things to find easier in the car, but I have about 3,000 songs on my iPod, and that would take far too long.
What I'm realizing is that I want to SEE the iPod screen (when you use the Kenwood unit, it simply displays "KENWOOD" on the iPod screen and all controls are routed to the head unit), and be able to use the scroll wheel to find things. So, I'm trying to find a car mounting solution. My car stereo does have an auxillary input, so I can plug the iPod into that. I also have a console that has a perfect iPod-sized location (1996 Isuzu Rodeo). However, I don't want to power it from the cigarette lighter, because I don't want to have wires trailing everywhere, and I also use that lighter sometimes to power my cell phone on road trips.
So, I'm wondering, does anything exist that is like a dock you can sit your iPod in that has the minijack input in the back (similar to the Apple dock), and has power-out wires that you can connect directly to your car? This would be an ideal solution for many car owners I believe, and probably would be the most cost-effective in-car solution. (The iPod Kenwood unit alone was $100.00). Any ideas? I know I could mount a second cigarette lighter and hide it behind the dash, but I'm not sure I want to do that. Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks,
Kevin
