I just got the new iPod 60. From what I have been told by Apple, my iPod should last 15hrs. I know that the more things you have turned on ie extras/games/etc. Can draw power. Right now I have only used it to listen to music and the battery dies after about 8hrs from a full charge.

Is this normal? What can I do to possibly fix this.

Is your backlight on? Backlight takes up alot of your battery. I've heard EQ does too.

I have my backlight on, but only for ten seconds at a time.
I have eq off, games/extras off and sound check is off.
I can not see backlight sucking up 7 hours of battery life.
Can I possibly have a defective iPod?

how often do you have the backlight on? cause i would guess that the backlight would take around 40-50% of the battery if not more.

REALLY?! I only use it when nav through music. I try to find what I want to listen quick. Then I set it to either a play-list or shuffle. Other then that I leave it alone except to skip a track. So I don't use it often. I will shut if off to see what difference I find. I just find it hard to beleive....WOW!

Can anyone else relate to this problem?

Do a test. Make sure the battery is fully chared. Turn off your EQ and shuffle enough songs to last about 15 hours. Leave it alone, and do not turn the backlight on. If your IPod lasts 12 hours or less, I would contact Apple for a replacement. If over 12, I'd say that's pretty good.

Mine Easily gets 10 hours with room to spare while using it at work. sometimes i even have the eq on. it knocks off like 2 hours of play time. Changing tracks really suck up a lot of energy on mine. I think 10 hours with moderate track shuffling and 10 sec. backlight is normal. My buddy gets the somae thing.

I read the review on this site about my iPod and supposably they got 17hrs out of the one they tested.....Can I get that one!

I think there is something really wrong with mine. I dont think I should have to not touch it to get at least 12hrs out of it.
I am testing it today (with out touching it) to see how long it will run for.

I got the service contract at bestbuy so at least I can get it repaired.

sometimes a brand new device will need a battery cycle or two before it functions perfectly.

Also, are you running it until the iPod dies, or just until the battery indicator is low and red? The battery indicators on the photos are notoriously inaccurate and it will often play a couple hours after the indicator says the battery is dead. I get about the advertised 15 hours, even with some backlight usage, though no EQ or soundcheck.

should i let it die before I recharge it? Will that help?

No, these batteries don't have a memory. The only benefit running it to 0%, is that the battery indicator will be more accurate. Do that your first time, but every other time, don't let it run down all the way if you don't have to. These batteries only have 400 full recharges.

remember you have to charge the ipod for 5 hours as a full charge. Forget about the battery idecator on the ipod.

I charge it over night so I'm good on the 5hrs.
I spoke to a few friends of mine who have the 3G 20gigs as well as some who have minis. They have similar problems with their battery life as well.
I am really disappointed that the back light drains so much power.
I could see it draining a few hrs....ok, but to drain several, that is just bad. Poor design on that end.

I just got a new 60gig and I charge it for 5 hours overnight and use it all day at work. I haven't run the battery all the way down, but after a day of listening to about 7 whole albums where the only backlight use is switching between these, the battery has only gone down by about 1 third.

So, I think there might be a problem, in your case. Then again I hardly ever use the backlight or even navigate around during the day.
