Is it okay for me to use a pda cover to completely cover my iPod to protect it from scratches? I'm afraid it might leave some residue (in the long run) or it might damage my iPod due to heat issues? I noticed the case that comes with the iPod is a POS and actually leads to more scratches. Guess my pda cover will have to do until new cases comes out for the new iPods.

You should have no problem with the PDA covers. I just recently took mine off after about 4 months and there was no residue at all.

Yes, it is safe to use PDA screen covers, though they can be cumbersome to see through - the protector film is grainy etc...
I used clear masking tape (and I highly recomend it) having bought some writewrights. There is no residue, you honestly cannot tell it is on (unlike with PDA protectors) and it is just an overall cleaner cut finish.

I'm using some WriteRight screen protective covers at the moment, and they seem to come off without a thing

infact, they even clean the surface when you pull 'em off :)
